"Evan hits hard." It was said with a smile as she joined the other two girls on the rooftop. Having caught the end of what Nora had been saying before she'd asked about basement related things.

It was a relief seeing everyone up and about and bandage free again. Specially all the newbies. Weeks out of the pods, and they'd been tossed to the wolves. Er.. Sandworms. Whatever. "How's it going, Nora?"

America was greeted with a hug, as she usually was. Moon wife.

"I'm not overly concerned about you livin' nearby." he murmured in response to her insistence. "And yeah. I mean... if you're feelin' like you wanna join in. You're welcome." He'd enjoyed their jamming the last time they'd done that.

"I'm open to visits as long as the door is open. If it's locked, it probably means I'm in a mood. So don't break in."

Hanna's big Polish family was full of veterans, and Memorial Day was a special occasion that involved lots of food, lots of lipstick smears on her cheeks, and lots of sitting around breathing bonfire smoke and her aunt's cigarettes. Back in Maryland, the family always feasted on steamed blue crab, various salad varieties, lots of kielbasa/sausage/bratwurst/other phallic meats, and copious helpings of libation. For the Deus Memorial Day, Hanna found herself much more strapped for food items to bring. She hadn't gone on leave yet, but with some bartering, she managed to procure macaroni noodles, mayonnaise, lemon, and -- the piece de resistance -- Old Bay seasoning. In her grandmother's version, there was shrimp, but she didn't have that luxury here.

In the end, it was a halfway decent macaroni salad with an Old Bay kick. Not too terrible, by her standards. She had no Tupperware so the food had been concocted in a pot she had found in the kitchen, cleaned, and covered with tinfoil. Hanna slipped into her most American outfit, which consisted of a red zip hoody, tank top, jean shorts, red bandana stuffed into her backpocket for effect, and Converses.

When she arrived, Hanna passed by the cemetery and opted to go straight up to the roof. There were some people down there already, and she didn't want to interrupt. Plus, in the time that she had been gone, she had managed to avoid the place. Part of her was terrified of walking down rows and recognizing names. Wasn't it better to think of her old friends as being assigned to another post?

She spotted the Twitter-active, Peyton's moon-wife, leader of the Basement Nation, redhead standing beside a couple familiar faces. Though she had never spoken directly to America, Hanna had heard a lot about her in the short time she had been back out of the pod. America was kind of famous, she figured. The Deus Homecoming Queen.

Hanna approached the group, macaroni salad in hand. "Hi," she said, smiling at Peyton and Nora whom she recognized immediately before diverting her gaze back to America. "I'm Hanna. We met, sort of, at the hide and seek thing Melvin did. And Twitter. Anyway, I have come bearing macaroni salad with Old Bay, since no one's grandmother could make it." She tilted the bowl up, and it squished wetly inside.

Rin held Melvin a little more tightly as they ascended. She had to treasure what she still had.

Al meanwhile had his sails easily deflated. Awe c'mon. "Not a boy," he huffed at America before eyeing longingly over at the buffet. He however kept more attention on Jan. Men pay attention to guests more than food, right?

"You didn't get hurt though did you?" The desert though sounded frightening. But he was easily distracted by the suggestion of something called three cheese. Can never have too much cheese. He slid towards it while trying to look like he wasn't. "These?" He pointed, plate at the ready.

"Yeah pardner, them there." he said with that same warm smile. "And nah, ah didn't get even a scratch on me. That's what us Deaths do. We get in and get out and no one is any the wiser."

The food itself was rich, carefully and meticulously prepared and taste sensation unto itself. What Lawrence lacked in the practicality of ingredients he made up in gourmet preparation.

Memorial Day hadn't meant much before Deus, but he'd never lost anyone in battle then either, and he'd woken up pretty sobered. He and Rep had set out early yesterday to hunt, and he'd helped clean up the meat and hang the skins out near the caves.

"Been a while since we been to a proper BBQ."

They brought it over in a cooler, a pile of assorted steak-style meat, although none of it was from cows, and clunked it down next to the grill.

"That's fresh," Harrison supplied helpfully.

She gave a pale chuckle. "No break-ins if it's locked, got it. I'd only do it to leave a nice note anyway." He wouldn't get the Leslie treatment. It occurred to her that she might have been in the way of private mourning, though, and Stormy quickly added in a more apologetic tone, "I, um, hope I wasn't interrupting you."

Rocking back on her heels, America preened, "I am indeed. If you ever need any help, especially if you're in the basement, but otherwise as well or course, my room is B01." She gave the keen look, figuring she could leave it for about 5 minutes before she hid a slice for Taym.

Hugging Peyton, America made good on an earlier threat and made a big show of smooching her cheek. Fortunately for Pey, today's cherry red lipstick was not the extra smudgey-stainy dire sort. She let go, though, when Hannah held up the bowl. "Thank goodness, I can't believe I didn't make a mac salad. I mean really, what's a cook-out if you've gone and forgotten such a thing? A ******** travesty is what it is, here let me." The girl took the offering and arranged it the table before stepping back and surveying the appearance of the food with an air of satisfaction.

"Yes, it's all shaping nicely, and how-do Hanna, I'm America Jones and glad as hell to make your proper quittance." Hands now free, she held one out to the other woman as she turned and whistled at Harrison's cooler. "Konstantin will do your meat up just right, honey, you won't have any regrets with him on the grill!"

Turning back to Nora and Hanna, she confided conspiratorially, "The fellow on the grill, the handsome one who fills out that polo so nicely? With the nice legs and shoulders? That's Konstantin, he's pretty much the best. If you ever need help? You can count on him just as much as me."

Otto lightly shrugged. "S'okay.." After all, she'd been friends with Nevada too. "I been hoggin' this spot for too long anyway." Otto slowly rose to his feet, dusting off his clothes. "Ill see ya later, Stormy." He murmured, his mood solemn and sad. He'd been getting better, of course. But today was a day he let himself look back.

The teen quietly walked away from the graves, intent on going back to his room.

Noemi had snuck in quietly, looking around for anyone she had known, but since she didn't know many, it was easy for her to stand in the outskirts and patiently wait for someone. Maybe.

Maybe she could visit fallen hunters.

Ahh but graveyards could be scary soo....

Al deftly loaded his plate up before shifting closer to Jan offering a single piece, "want one?" He figured once he got a taste the rest on his plate would vanish. The remark about death though had Al recalling something Rep once told him. That as bad a** as scars looked - they were a sign that an injury was sustained, rather than avoided. Death's avoid injury. It would lead one to draw the conclusion that a successful death would have none. This entire time Al was staring at the piece he was offering Jan.

Hanna passed the macaroni salad over to America. "Happy to help," she said lightly. She accepted the hand America offered and gave it a shake. The girl exuded energy, and it was more than a little infectious. It was very easy to get caught up in, which had Hanna smiling a little wider than she normally did. She was forgetting to brood, goddamnit.

America pointed out Konstanin on the grill, and Hanna paused. "Oh wait, the library guy? I know the library guy. Well, I know his library. I dumped a bunch of books in there in supplication, an offering to the book gods for reading options other than Blood and Guts Vo. VII or Kissing the Highwayman's Chainsaw or Saw: The Prequel or Monsters Under My Bed... No Really, Send Help, etc. etc." In fact, she had one of his books waiting for her back on her bed at home. It had taken some deal of willpower to share her Harry Potter books, but she believed in spreading the wealth of reading love.

Neomi wandered in and Hanna waved at her with a smile.

Evan returned early from his day in the real world, less a six pack of beer--which he had finished off somewhere between the graveyard and the portal--and a hat--which he had lost shortly after finishing the beer--but with a 10 pound bag of genuine Idaho potatoes and an early watermelon. They had seemed like good ideas at the time, given the holiday, but it hadn't struck him until after they had been bought that he had nowhere to put them where they wouldn't spoil. The potatoes would keep a while in his closet if they absolutely had to, he figured, but where was he going to keep a watermelon?

Fortunately, the problem solved itself. The enticing scent of burning meat lured Evan all the way from the lighthouse, and it only got stronger as he approached the dorms. He could see tiny people on top of the building, and his decision was made as he hit the training fields. He could use the food if nothing else, having had nothing that day but beer and free samples, and he was on the right side of buzzed to be sociable rather than surly.

(Surly had come after the last beer but before the watermelon. He had entirely new reasons never to show his face in Idaho again, now. A shame, too; they really did grow the best potatoes there.)

Evan was even sober enough to navigate the stairs without tripping or dropping anything, and he considered it a minor victory when he made it to the roof with everything intact. Even tipsy, his first instinct was to analyze the rooftop party for any potential threats. There weren't enough people there to accurately call the gathering a crowd, but they were fairly high up--he figured as long as he stayed away from the edges of the roof, he would be okay.

"Ladies," Evan drawled as he strolled towards the group of girls, smiling broadly through the scruff that hadn't seen a razor in the better part of a week. "I come bearing gifts," he said, holding up the watermelon and potatoes to illustrate. "Where do you want these? And I hope someone brought a knife, 'cause my weapon's not really made for clean cuts."

"See ya." There was no customary attempt to hug it out, only a sad sort of smile as she saw Otto off.

Stormy didn't feel any better around the graves, and without anything to give them she felt more unwanted than anything else. Still, she meandered around a little, scanning names until she hit the wall. Croix's was somewhere there, though she couldn't locate it. She gazed at the wall as a whole for a while, her hands fiddling in her pockets, before she murmured a prayer in Spanish under her breath for those who couldn't be here--or who once had, in another life. Only then did she finally read Gale's text.

Let me know if you need anything.

Stormy read the words several times over for a hidden message, felt herself starting to sink while doing so (there was far too much she needed), and put her phone away. Bring back food was what she needed to focus on.

Quietly she shuffled towards the main gathering, intent on getting several plates and filling them with as much food as possible. While circumnavigating people, she spotted Noemi and paused, uncertain about what to do. She'd been ignoring her cousin for . . . how long now? Was this really the time to keep doing so? Stormy just eyed her instead, watching for a reaction, cautiously noting that Evan was also there (though perhaps a lot more distracted, thankfully).

"Good to know! Actually I was hoping I could get something like a roster of who's down there?" Nora asked, making a mental note to bother this Konstantine fellow later when he wasn't busy doing good work. "Just to know who's who and where without acting like a Mormon missionary. And, ah, well, always could use some practice with Moons. Heard something about Eclipse being a thing."

Now Nora hadn't heard of macaroni salad, but damn did it smell good. She grinned at Peyton and Hanna. "Like a cannon ball," she agreed with the former, wincing. "Hopefully I'll return the favor one day. Doing alright, Hanna, just . . . sort of glad I don't know any folk down there yet, to put it as polite as possible. You?" She was reaching for a plate to try out some of this new dish when, speak of the devil, the man arrived.

"And look, Mr. Badass is here himself. Don't got a knife on me, but I'm sure a man as grizzled as you could break it in half on your own, eh?" Evan was normally a guy at ease, but the scruff and subtle tone told her his own celebration (or ritual) had started long before.

He could cut it on his nice hot abs~ Beatrix purred, and Nora considered the five second delay before it as new record.

"Then you're probably already on his Nice List," America nodded in approval, as if that was one of the best places anyone could find themselves. She wasn't the biggest fan of books, but anything that made Konstantin happy was something she'd encourage to the end of time. "If anyone wants a room list, Kon's got a spreadsheet an' he can print a copy out for you, easy as pie."

Speaking of which, she should probably get that piece for Taym but all such thoughts fluttered off as Evan strode in all whiskered-up and bearing potatoes and watermelon. "Well I guess we don't have to worry 'bout running out of salt anytime soon," she drawled back, shamelessly eyeing the blonde up and down as she took the melon off his hands. "Thank you." It was unclear if she was thanking him for the food offerings or for just standing there looking attractive in the sunlight.
