Loose End

"But all those books. Just think about how much of a nerd you could be all the time." Perhaps this wasn't the best way to sell him on Life division. Perhaps that was intentional.

Two Bits

"But Taym, everybody else is doing it. How else will I get to be all cool and edgy?" She sniffed, "Not gonna let Leslie outcool me, that'd be terrible."

Back

With a slow, warm smile, the coat was given up to the cause, the first of many sacrifices.

And After

The light filtering through the blinds is still grey-blue and dim so of course he's already awake--of course he is--and he's momentarily distracted from the clinging scraps of nightmares by examining dispassionately the white curve of America's shoulderblade and the warm-colored tumbling fall of her hair across it. He wants to get up, go running, not because he likes running--he doesn't--or because he thinks it makes him a better Hunter--he doesn't--but because he is a creature of ritual and routine and he went running every morning long before Deus came into the picture, because he finds it impossible to think while he is running and because it feels good to be exhausted. Instead he laces a strand of her hair through his fingers.

She is, he thinks, not the most beautiful woman he has ever been with, because Taym has strange and capricious standards, but she is definitely far, far more beautiful than he has ever deserved let alone than he deserves now, to say nothing of everything else that she is, and the idea of trying to catalog this latter list leaves him feeling helpless and stupid and unbearably mediocre.

He hates this. It is inevitable, part of a long-established cycle, and he has always pretended to sail above it but he knows himself to be weak and pliant and greedy. He runs over in his head all the things that he will say to her when he wakes her up, which is really just one thing said many ways: I don't think we should do this any more and I've always been really bad at the friends with benefits thing and I don't want to be constantly reminded what I can't have and you make it too easy for me to ignore what little common sense I have.

(He suspects she might be thinking of initiating the same conversation but for different reasons; he suspects he was lucky to get even this; he suspects she will shrug and smile and say "OK" and that will be the end of it, and this will destroy him.)

He combs through the list, he phrases and rephrases in his head, and when she stirs he leans to wake her through the expedient of kissing her shoulder (his jaw rough-stubbled already, and true to his promise he hasn't shaved) and what he says in a murmur in her ear is: let's go for a run.

And After

The answer is a sudden, sharp inhalation and face turning toward him, full of bright, simple joy. It's shuffled somewhere between hands and lips that both rush and linger, the motions of a girl who is used to navigating the desire to savour the moment and that of rushing ever forward.

And it's yes, of course. It's finally. It's laughter and then yes once more. It's a painful amount of affection, clearly on display between let's go and right now.

He gives her a look and he goes back to his metamorphosis.

"I will never make you an omelet again," he says, "and I will call you Aldrina constantly. I think you can let Leslie win just once."

Text to Leona Tavish: It was worthwhile, I think. I hope. I am sure that I owe the fact that I am alive right now to everyone who went in front of me, including you and your brother. I can't possibly hope to be worth the sacrifice, but I plan on trying anyway.

The Waxwing Slain

"--and it doesn't matter whether Nabokov was a fan of symbolism or not. Readings of authorial intent are the bluntest instruments a literary fan has, so I don't feel like I'm reaching to say it was an interesting choice of image for opening the centerpiece of a book whose entire purpose is to have you constantly unsure about what's true and what isn't, which is why I picked it, by the way, so ******** you, thanks."

He'd been unusually chatty, desperately relieved when the taunt gave him something familiar to talk about, something non-dangerous. He transferred the braid to one hand to take the joint out of her hand and take a hit, handing it back across and resuming his work, which was a complicated fishtail and considerably neater and more practiced than Kostya's efforts.

"Also," he continued through a forced cough, "people argue that it's almost meant to be the last line too, but I think the whole thing's cyclical. If you read straight through the last canto and loop back around to the beginning there's a perfectly cohesive--I'm boring the ******** out of you," he finished drily, absently working back through the braid to artistically loose a strand here and there.

Two Bits

America sighed melodramatically, eyes rolling with all the put-upon force of an eighteen year old girl. "Well fine, but if I don't get picked for prom queen it's on your head." Leaning she teased at her hair a bit, "Maybe I should just make it all bigger."

A smug, a*****e grin followed, "The bigger the hair 'n all."

Alive and well. There was a small adjustment period for your daughter, but that's apparently passed. There was a play. Would you like a copy of the video?

The Waxwing Slain

She took a slow, contemplative drag and then tilted her head back to smile up at him. "Sometimes Konstantin reads to me in Russian. I think I understand more of that than whatever you just went on about." America didn't seem too terribly put out about it. "I like it when you go on your little wordsy nerd journeys though, your voice has a...." she made a gesture with her hand, "and you get all..." she makes a face and it looks nothing like anything that could have possibly passed across Taym's features in his entire life.

Text to Leona Tavish: I know exactly what it was for and I have no delusions that it was in any way about me. I wish I could have done something, but the only thing I can do is stop reminding you. You won't hear from me again. Thank you, again, even if you don't want my gratitude.

The Waxwing Slain

Again the inflated, wounded dignity. "Nerdy word journeys. And I thought you said you'd nailed down a good impression of me, before I left. I can't tell if it's rusty or if you were lying." He teased a strand out of the rubber band, wrapped it around and tucked it back in, neatly hiding the tie: a fussy, artistic fillip before he draped it over her shoulder for her appraisal, and made himself, at Fiona's uneasy urging, not kiss the newly-exposed back of her neck. He was trying, trying.

"I am incredibly jealous," he added, "that Bashmet gets to read Nabokov in his native language, but he wrote Pale Fire in English first, and Lolita too, so not as jealous as I could be. How'd I do? Did I pass muster?"

The Waxwing Slain

She grinned at the critique and then examined the braid while Taym reaffirmed how much of a huge nerd he was, just in case she'd forgotten in the past minute or so. In the light, indolent haze of her thoughts, she conceded that 1) it was kind of adorable when he just couldn't help himself and 2) he was really good at braiding hair.

"Well dang if I'm not a fancy-a** princess," she paused, "moreso than usual." She turned to give him a pleased look, "Omelets and hand signs and braids, oh my, Obadiah Thompson, you are a man of hidden skills indeed."

America flipped the end of her braid at him in a little wave, "At the very least, you don't have to be jealous of his braiding skill. Kon's gotten better, but fancy well..." her voice grew wistfully fond, because it wasn't so much a matter of skill, anymore, but the fussy insistence of certain symmetries. Maybe, when it came to patterns, he couldn't help but seek out some sort of rigid perfection.
