"Contrary to what it pleases you to tell yourself, I am not going out of my way to make myself unhappy every time I come down here. Back of the knife, front of the knife, ******** hilt-deep in the ribs, it doesn't ******** matter--" he was damn near shouting now, and his voice rose steadily "--because I dont-- want-- to fight people. I signed up to fight the dark, and almost every ******** mission they've sent me out against--against just... just ******** guys, just guys in suits, just normal people, and I couldn't do it, I tried not to do the easy thing, and I almost got Maebe killed for it and Bix too, and I am not going to scurry around burning witches for Caelius, and I am not going to corner Leslie in a safe house some day, and I am not going to slaughter a bunch of turncoats to send a--a ******** message--I'm not--"

He went in again, but he was shaken up now and tired and paired with her ready defense the blow was glancing at best, and he fumbled back and the knife disappeared, Fiona's disappointment at the vanishing charge a hissing, frustrated whisper and then silence.

"I hate this," he repeated, the yell all dropped out of his voice with the disappearance of the weapon. "And I'm bad at it. And maybe you should get a Sun to help you with this next time, because I'm--this is always how it goes. This is always... always how it goes. I can't... this is always how it ends up." He held out for her, for just a second, his shaking hands, before shoving them into his pockets. "I don't know what my ******** problem is, OK? Some ******** bullshit, I don't know. You're right. I always end up feeling guilty and bad for myself. Sorry."

America had been ready to start shouting over him as soon as he began with contrary to what it pleases you to tell yourself, but the urge died as went on because obviously it wasn't just about sparring. Or even just about his discomfort with his own weapon. She dealt with the attack easily enough, but stayed quiet, even as he desummoned and lost all will to even try and continue either the spar or the argument. The visions, ones they'd shared and one he hadn't, came to her mind easily at the reminder, and her own anger faded back into concern and unease.

That last one she'd had of him, she liked to think she was dead for that one, along with Konstantin. She liked to think she'd never stand by for this man to become that one. Moving to change Stryker back, she paused at the weapon's sudden demand and sighed, answering out loud, "Yeah, okay." The runes flared to sudden, fiery life and a bird made of brilliant flames shot out of the golden ball and impaled America, briefly sheathing her in fire. Flashy as always.

It hurt, because of course it did. Her weapon was not tidy and Stryker was not gentle in any form. Fire was fire. But in the end both pain and flame faded and both girl and shield were the better for it. She desummoned him back into a golden pin, and gave Taym a wry smile, her voice gentler but still not holding anything close to pity for the man, "It's just training Taym, I wanted to have this with you at least the once, okay?" Shrugging, America rolled her shoulders, "Its wasn't bad, either, we're pretty well matched. But I'm sorry I pushed you. Not sorry for yelling, though, because you're a little stupid sometimes and I'd hate for you to think you're right."

He'd startled at the sudden pyrotechnics, and for an instant he'd actually moved as if to pluck her out of the flames before the realization of what was happening caught up to him and he yanked himself back instead, shaken. He was struck once again by how quiet Fiona was, how small, and in this instance he appreciated her for it.

"Shadow Run," he said when the flames died down, closing his eyes at being called stupid and refusing to rise to the bait. "Next time. I'm less stupid there, you'll be glad to know, and it'll be twice I've found myself there in the company--" the words died in his mouth, the joke cut short, and he gave himself a shake. "Next time," he repeated firmly. "Not just the once."

Lying came easy, because it always had.

The girl visibly brightened again at the next time, eyes focusing on him intently but trusting the conviction in his voice. Once again talk of later. Of things they'll do once he gets back. "Good," she was grinning now, the last bots of her aggravation only a few minutes ago sliding off easily. "And thank you, I think a learned a few good things today." Along with a few unhappy things but nevermind that.

"Maybe next time you oughta wear that tie. 'Specially if you plan to lecture facts n'such, again."
