Xylocopa Virginica AKA The Carpenter Bee If you see one of these guys hovering outside a bench or wall, he's holding that spot for a female and hoping she'll repay the favor by having sex with him.

Eviesee645 XD yes traumatic insemination I would say is second best in insect sex only to the endophallus of bees (but I'm a little biased and love bees most of all) Yeah they're not so hard to avoid if you know you've been exposed, but pretty easy to get if you're not paying attention. Honestly I got really lucky because I found one of the bed bugs before the infestation had gotten too too bad One of my fave penises of the animal world is The detachable free swimming p***s of the agronaut. Its not weird for me to have fave peniis right? Since my degree is in behavioural ecology....which is basically another way of saying life strategys of animals...which is a nice way of saying I have a degree in animal sex XD. As a world travelling...and one always travelling on a tight budget its one thing that I try and stay pretty alert for.

There was a moth I found when I was in Ontario which took me a fair while to identify. Turns out it was a Virginica as well (Spilosoma virginica). I guess I didnt really expect to find the virginia tiger moth in ontario...but then I had no idea about its range.

Animal sex is pretty awesome, it was definitely one of the most interesting parts of entomology.

Calopteryx dimidiata The Sparkling Jewelwing Damselfly Also fun fact: Damselflies mate in a heart shape (and have spoon penises to scoop out the semen from any other males and ensure their genes are the ones passed on)

For today, my favorite insect of all: Apis Mellifera, the European Honey Bee As briefly referenced earlier, the male has an endophallus meaning that he must turn his abdomen inside out, killing himself in order to mate. Also the males only have one set of chromosomes, but the females have two.
