She stopped dead, her fins flaring about her, keeping their momentum even after her body had become still. It was a move she'd practiced quite frequently to aid her in drawing in and seducing. She had done it now on reflex alone. Curiosity, not want, drew her toward the tiny stallion. Now that she had his attention though, she felt like it would be a good idea to come up with at least some reason as to why she was following him.
"Are you... building a nest?" Wow, she sighed inwardly. Of all the stupid questions she could have pulled up that had to be the one.

Lady Aria Starstone He stared at her, both stunned by the brightness and impressed by the move. When she spoke, though, he sort of blinked. Finally he shook his head, with a confused expression on how to answer her.
After all.. his mouth was full of seaweed. He tilted his head back and forth, trying to figure out how to do this. Finally, he carefully shifted, and propped the kelp between his legs. "Ahhhhhh... no, Miss. I... nests? Do we build nests? Anyways, no I'm bringing it for trade with a new friend..."

He was trading? Maybe he would be of some use after all.
"I've seen some build them to nestle their shells in," she said, keeping her voice sweet and soft. "I thought you might be building a nest by the shore. I was going to warn you against it, there are scary kalona up there."

Lady Aria Starstone He smiled a little. "Oh! I have no shells, no mate... So no need for a nest. I see. And... Kalona? I don't know Kalona, I have never met any... But my friend is a Unicorn. He's bringing me something I want to try, and I'm returning the favor. In fact, I need to get moving again, or I'll be late!"

She nodded, fully intending to follow along behind him. Maybe the trade was for something useful. There was no harm in finding out.

Lady Aria Starstone He smiled and gave a polite nod of good bye, then grabbed the kelp in his teeth again. He was rather more careful in his manuevering between the rocks this time, and soon made it to the shore. He broke the surface, looked around and spotted Ilum.
He swam up and carefully placed the branch on the edge of the ice for Ilum. "Sorry I was a little late! I had a bit of a moment on the way!"

She waited to watch where he was going then followed up behind. When she reached the stream entrance she cursed, it was too shallow for her to follow along behind without being noticed.

The little stallion didn't emerge from the water for a little while after Ilum had settled down to wait for him. When he did though, the unicorn was there, looking down and smiling.
"Took you long enough, Kai. Was it hard to find the... uhh... Well, would you tell me just what that is again?" It looked a bit slimy and oddly coloured not something he would have tried out himself if he'd stumbled upon it laying on the sore. "It's... good?"

Lady Aria Starstone He was so focused, he certainly didn't notice the mare following him. He blinked a little at the question, then smiled. "It IS good. Or at least I find it so. Maybe it'll taste different to a land dweller, I don't know..." He looked a little anxious at that, not wanting to give his new friend something he wouldn't like. "And yeah... Like I said, had a moment. The kelp tried to escape, and then some one wanted to make sure I wasn't building a nest on the shore."
He paused, then said "What's a kalona? She warned me about them..."

"Kalona?" he echoed, "Well, they're vicious creatures. They are Same size as I am but they have wings. Not feathered wings like birds." Would Kai know what a bat was? "They have horns on their head. I doubt you have any reason to worry about them. I've never heard of one taking an affinity to water."
He smiled again, "You're friend is a she, eh? She's the reason you were held up? Was she pretty?" The little stallion had just been sighing over his lack of ability to find any of his own kind after all. Ilum wouldn't have held it against him if the fellow had hung back to flirt.

Lady Aria Starstone Kai listened to the description and wiggled his head back and forth for a moment. "They sound odd... But All right. I doubt I'll ever meet one... and if I do, I'll dive down out of their reach, I think!"
He blinked a little, curiously at the questions, then he laughed quietly. "Oh yes, she's very pretty. Pink and gold... Loooooooong tail, long hair... A bit large for me, though, she's a full sized mer! She was just being kind, I think!"

Ilum accepted the kelp that had been offered too him, letting it drip off some of the salty sea water before making even the slightest attempt to chew it. It smelled weird, to say the least. He had been expecting it to smell something like grass but it really just did not smell the slightest like grass at all. It was chewy too, no crispness in it at all. Entirely unlike the foods he normally associated with a high water content. The salt was what really surprised him though. It was almost like trying to drink sea water only in a solid, stringy mass. It was not entirely unpleasant. But it was also clear to him that this was not something he would want to seek out on a regular basis.
"Hmm..." he said as he finished the first piece. "That was unexpected."

That stallion was taking way too long to return. At this rate she would look suspicious as all get out sneaking about at the river's exit. She frowned and swam up to breach the water. The small stallion hadn't swam too far up the stream. She could see him talking to the white unicorn from where she was bobbing in the water.
They were exchanging something. Surface foods? She had tried surface fruits before, and they were well worth the wait. She dove again with a slight 'plunk' sound from the water closing in over her head. She planned on going down to the kelp where the little stallion had harvested the clump he had brought to the surface. Maybe he had made a couple trades before and hidden the spoils down there.

Ilum never saw the mare floating a the surface of the water. If he had he might have pestered his new little friend about his secret admirer. As it was he only heard the plunk and looked out just in time to see a few waves ripple out past where she had submerged again. He wrinkled his nose, but didn't say anything. Who knows. Maybe it had been a bird diving for fish. The vast oceans did not concern him.
He turned back to Kai and started talking again, "It is chewier than anything I've ever tried before, and so salty. I guess that comes from stewing in the ocean, right? Is there anything like a fresh water kelp? I like salt just fine but there's a limit to everything."

She swam around at the ocean floor for a while, darting between strings of kelp and nudging any rock or sunken wood that looked even the least bit suspicious. Every so often she would glance up again, making sure that the stallion would not sneak by without her seeing, but she was sure he was getting something good up there, so her wait would be well rewarded.
When she found nothing among the kelp she went back up to breach the surface a second time, making sure that the little guy had not slipped past her after all. This breach was far shorter and she was under water again a second after going up above the water line.
He was there, and from her brief glimpse he was still thoroughly distracted.
