While he did tell Sherry to keep attacking no matter what, he chided himself for getting distracted, barely fending off the blow himself.

She was still doing what she could to keep the attacks up. She had to admit though, Jake had been giving her a run for her money.
Neither of them were out of this yet.

Now that he thought about it, why did he even think he'd have a chance? Measly runics were no match for a bonded FEAR weapon, and certainly no match for the real thing. He knew he would lose that battle, but to think that it would be a one-sided slaughter...
There was no way he could ever run a mission again, no way he could ever face those horsemen.
Was he doomed to a life of mediocre tasks, stuck on the island?
... no, of course not. Life was never that kind.
Though he managed to avoid Sherry's attack, he couldn't put this off forever. The end was inevitable.

Sherry would have pointed out to Jake that he'd make quite a dent in her shield. That she was huffing and puffing a little bit here. But alas, she could not read his thoughts, and thus, her focus was still on attacking.
Sometimes it didn't matter how much you focused. Sometimes your swings only connected with air.

Most certainly not a trick. Nor was it a trick when her recovery swing barely grazed him.
She must have been more worn out than she'd thought.

Hesitating all his life wasn't going to get him anywhere.
It had been some sort of miracle in itself when he managed to do decent damage to her shield, and while he had expected to lose unconditionally at first, did he... actually have a chance?
Where he found this resolve, he didn't know, but he was determined to not give up without a fight, whether it be a spar or a fight for his life.

He did have a chance, even if Armagnac detested the idea. The runics didn't leave him completely helpless, just easier to to handle. Sherry was glad he was doing so well. He'd been so sad after the last match.
But she wasn't going to toss him an unearned win. Oh no. That was not their deal.

Jake was glad Sherry wasn't going easy on him, even now. If there was anything he hated more than losing, it was winning a battle where the other opponent didn't even try. And so he put his efforts into defending this time.

She'd promised to try, so she still was.
Besides, wager or not, she was planned to ask for something if she won this. It was still an if, seeing how well he holding up. Sherry smiled. He was tougher than he thought he was.

Flattery would get you everywhere. At least, that was what how the saying went, and it would have been the same for Sherry had he not already known the lengths she had gone to just for him. As it was, he was already eternally grateful she was helping him with this, and would have been more than happy to answer any request... within reason.
Thankfully, she didn't seem like the type to manipulate or take advantage of him. Or at least he'd hoped. But now was not the time for such thoughts, and it seemed Sherry was putting her all into this, not that he'd expect anything less.

Sherry was not above manipulation, to some degree. Not where things like cuddles were involved.
But that was not important right now. Right now what was important was that she somehow missed hitting her target again. ... Jake was wearing her out with this spar.

The thought had never occurred to him, but was Sherry actually getting tired? Even with runics, he was able to put up a decent defense, which managed to save him from several powerful blows, so unlike last time, this spar seemed to be lasting longer.
No one would go to such lengths for him, and he was touched Sherry was doing all this. Of course, it helped her too, but to imagine, spar after spar. He really needed to treat her to something nice after this.
As he himself disliked being handed an easy win, he was also determined to at least make Sherry fight back, if even a little.

She was tired. Which made for erratic attacks, it seemed. She was trying, though. He'd wanted to be attacked, and she was doing all she could to make that happen.
She managed to put on a smile, too.

Whatever delusion he had of possibly winning faded as Sherry struck, and he barely got the daggers up in time.
By some miracle though, he was still standing, but not for long.
