He was rewarded for his persistence. Taym was rarely rewarded for anything. He prodded the pile of stones with his toe and flinched, waiting for something to take off his foot. Nothing did.

He carefully extracted five runestones. Five was a good round number too. But he was feeling greedy.

He would have sworn--he would have bet money--that the seaweed was further away than that. He had the unsettling thought, as it latched onto his ankle, that maybe it was ambulatory as well as malevolent.

He got a headstart on them this time, and put himself into a commanding lead. It was the hesitating at the mouth of the next cave that was where he screwed up.

That was definitely not a hug. He pried himself loose, trying to remain level-headed. Panicking while using an oxygen tank was a recipe for disaster.

Hello, old friend.
Taym gazed into the tooth-lined maw of the enormous creature that had risen up with damnable silence at the mouth of the cave. Either it was the same thing as last time, or, more horrifyingly, there were a bunch of these hanging around.
He preferred to think of it as the same one. That was a more pleasant thought.
