He was quiet for a second. This he sympathized with--as most of Deus probably did, honestly. "I have nightmares," he said, "on the rare occasion I get enough ********' sleep to dream, that they put me on pod duty and my sister's there. She was the same way. Never could keep her mouth shut. I tried to. After a while I told myself it was..." he hesitated, because even though he'd told her, it was hard to talk about. "I told myself it was... a side effect. But I'd been seeing them as a kid, too, and so did she. When we were young enough people thought it was a stupid game we played, but--"

He made an absent waving motion of his hand. It was uncharacteristically talkative, especially considering he'd just said he was bad at talking, but he felt the need to connect to her, to demonstrate his understanding. "I definitely busted a couple of noses," he said sympathetically. Scrawny, exhausted Taym, breaking noses. He must have been different then. "Busted them for other reasons too," he said suddenly, sounding tired. Dancing on the edge of another confession, another needling attempt to see if he could make her hate him. "I don't think we'd have gotten along that great."

Somehow the idea of stumbling upon Astrid asleep in a pad had not occurred to her. Something that might be apparent by her slow dawning horror that crept over her face as the notion really sank in. Her jaw worked, eyes flicking off him, around the room, before returning. "I hadn't thought of that."

It made her really hope that all Astrid's talk had been just that, talk.

Some measure of comfort came in the form of a shared desire to protect a younger sibling, and it pulled a much softer look from the Sun trainee before he ventured on about the likelihood of them having gotten long in school. "Probably not. I didn't get along with anyone." Her lip curled slightly, pale eyes hardening. "I didn't even try." It had always just been easier not getting attached. Meant there was no one left behind to miss when they moved on.

She made another smoothing gesture over the tops of her thighs. Something to do with her hands. "That was high school though, and id doesn't even com close to the real world, or here." It was dismissal of past arrogance and stupidity, on both sides.

Whoops, said the wrong thing again. As he always did. This was why he shouldn't talk. Guilt flickered over his face.

"I'm sure we've both grown up a lot since then," he said quietly. She at Deus, he in the real world, as she put it. Because obviously, the two were different places. And both of them with the scars to show for it. The thought suggested another avenue of talk--anything to avoid her thinking about Astrid again, anything to steer her away from his ******** going to fit right in now," he said suddenly, gesturing at his own shoulder and leaving a trail of smoke. "Feel like it's part of the uniform around here. Badge of honor. Especially in your division. Could be wrong but I think mine is supposed to be about avoiding the scars."

Her chin tipped in a small nod, agreeing with his assessment that she'd both done quite a bit of growing up since high school. Granted, she'd only just recently gotten away from that particular hell.

The topic change had her looking up at him again, following the trail of smoke as he moved his hand along his shoulder. It made her smile, features smoothing out. This was a nicer topic, less personal, less painful. Well.. emotionally. "Seems that way, but I don't think Kat has any scars. At least not any glaringly obvious ones." All the other full Sun hunters seemed to have them. Lots of them.

She glanced down and to the left, as if she could see the jagged line of stitches, but really she could only see the very edge and a little almost healed bruising. They were going to have to come out soon, or she was going to heal right over them. "You know, I kinda like it. Like you said, badge of honor. Besides, it looks pretty bad a**." She was grinning when she looked back up at him. "But I think you're right about Death. Aren't you guys all about stealth and infiltration and what not?"

"So I'm told," he said drily. "Not that I've had any taste of it. Just the same old drudgework every trainee has." And it was driving him insane. "Everyone seems to take a lot of pleasure in telling me what a bunch of sneaky unreliable ******** we are and what a homicidal a*****e my Division lead is, though. So if I'm going to get any scars, let's assume it's from him."

We. My. The tiniest, almost-unnoticeable upgrades from their first couple of conversations, when all of Deus was a "you" and "they." The buds of blind loyalty, which in Taym could grow dangerously deep roots. He wasn't looking at her so he didn't know if she was watching, but he absently performed a snap just in case, for the stupid reason that she always made an impressed face when he did some lame smoke trick, and he liked it. Liked impressing someone, anyone, even over something stupid.

"I envy you," he said suddenly. "Straightforward. It's gonna ******** something up. Run in, go hit it. Problem solved." Whether he was referring to her methods for dealing with trouble or her job was hard to say.
