He already saw a combination that had toast, ham, bacon, and eggs. He wished that had been pancakes, but that was good enough for him. That with coffee and he'd be in heaven.
He set the menu down as he regarded her and the surroundings. The cafe seemed a place for tourists and also the townies. It wasn't ridiculous with novelty items, and had a aged feel to it, as if it was made in a time when steam engines might have been around and had adapted and remodeled a few times over the years. It made him think of restaurants back home he always visited with his family.
"So you didn't even have study buddies or geek friends? I mean, I was working hard on my grades too for college, but I always made sure I had friends. I would have been more of a social outcast if I didn't, and it helped stop rumors." He had destroyed his reputation when he was a kid when he had been coping with seeing monsters and having episodes in middle school. Having a crazy label had taken years to shake off, and he managed to have friends again when he was in high school. It made for a nice protection, to be introduced back into the herd.

Rin on the other hand saw some interesting pastries and set her own menu down beside his in hopes it became clear they were ready to order.
"No, I was just so focused on trying to get a scholarship so I could go to college. My um.. family couldn't afford it. So. It ultimately still did not happen." Rin was so focused on getting places back then that the rout getting there was all a blurr.

The set menus was a good indicator, and a waiter came, dressed casually, and Melvin looked up with a bit of apprehension, wondering if they were used to tourists or hated them. "The ham and eggs plate, and coffee." He said, and when asked about cream or sugar, he shook his head. "No thank you." He let Rin order, and then he placed their menus down so they were out of the way.
"So what about growing up? You weren't thinking of college back then, right?" He wanted to know something about Rin that wasn't depressing. She seemed so sad and isolated in her past, yet she seemed normal.

Rin held her menu up and pointed to the item she wanted, "And a cappuccino." She looked to Melvin and smiled, sliding her menu at him, "I always wanted to try one of those."
"Growing up was... interesting. It was just me and my dad. He tried, but... well, we didn't have much money. I thought of school the moment I became old enough to be aware that he was struggling to do it on his own I guess. I guess I thought it was the only way I could help him at the time." She frowned a bit as guilt entered the look on her face, "I sometimes wonder if becoming a hunter helped him or made it worse..."

"Too bad. It sounds like you could have used a group of friends." He admitted, wondering how different things would have been for Rin if she had just a few girlfriends to talk with and maybe distract her from her troubles.
As for family burdens, he only took off his classes to inspect them for spots. "I would like to think that our families are better off." He said this to be kind,a and while in the long run he hoped things would be better, he knew any parent would be heartbroken at the loss of a child in any sort of matter, be it death or disappearance.
It was a idea that twisted his insides and made him think of his family crying, and he didn't like thinking about that for even a fraction of a millisecond.
Cleaning his glasses with a napkin, he continued with something a little lighter. "I wonder what you would have looked like as a kid. Did you bring any pictures from home?"

"I got through... and I have them now," she smile grew just a bit. "I'm pretty sure he is. I was draining all his money where they put me and he was too scared to really... change the circumstances. I'm sure he was sad and hurt... but I also think it meant he finally got to work on doing better for himself. No more worries. He could finally move on."
Rin clung to the subject change like a life preserver and gave a loud laugh, "I was a gangly little tumbleweed. As for pictures.. um... not really. I didn't have very many personal effects... there is...one. Though." She looked weary. "No one knew about it though so."

"Oh, so you have a picture?" He looked at her, and his lips pulled down. Something about the picture was upsetting to Rin, and while he was VERY curious, VERY VERY VERY MUCH wanted to ask about it, he bite his lip. He actually had to bite his own lip to keep from asking it.
Be better. Less Questions. Be better. Less Questions....
....Maybe she keeps the picture somewhere in her room. >_>
"If you don't want to show me though, that's fine." He hadn't shown anyone his own photo album after all.
The waiter came back with Melvin's coffee, and set a cup of cappuccino before Rin, a good 2/3'ds of the cup just froth designed in a pretty pattern of a heart.
Sipping his coffee and breathing out in relief at the taste (which was pretty damn good), he tried to think of anything else he was curious about. "What did your father do for a living?"

"Yeah... I'll show you maybe. Only if you promise not to laugh," That was the only hint he was getting about it. "You have to show me your pictures too. If you have any, of course."
Rin smiled at her mug before giving a hearty laugh. "It's almost too pretty to drink." She shifted it carefully closer to herself before looking up at Melvin, "Odd jobs mostly. Janitorial. Cheap repair. Mostly though... he worked as a gardener for a while. He really liked that job. He used to say it reminded him of my mother."

"Uh....right. I got a few." More like a whole book, but there were some pictures he wanted to take out before showing Rin, especially the one that had Mia in it. He didn't want to point out his ex-girlfriend to her.
"Oh, must have been rough. My dad was...uh, IS a paper pusher. He likes the job, but I think he always wanted to be a mechanic. My mother worked.." He paused for just a second. "- works at a jewelry store." It wasn't past tense. They were still working as far as he knew, their lives continuing without him.
He felt more and more depressed with the topic, and was glad when their places arrived, to which he undid his napkin, inspected the silverware, and then started to cut up his ham. "I don't want to depress you but.....can I ask what happened to your mother?"

Rin nodded thoughtfully as she took a piece of delicate pastry with a cream emerging from one end from her plate. "You will have to show me your pictures when we get back home." She bit into it and smiled, the filling was strawberries.
"Shame you don't like sweets, these are amazing."

He made a face at the amount of creme and sugar he could see, and popped a forkful of ham into his mouth, more pleased by the taste of something salty and savory than sweet. "You say that, but it also meant I wasn't completely depressed when Halloween came around. I could at least take the spicy candy from my siblings. I don't see how you can eat that this early in the morning. I'd feel like my teeth would fall out."
He took a bit of eggs, and a sip of coffee.

Rin laughed and polished off the one she'd bitten into. "Oh come now, there's nothing wrong with a bit of sugar first thing in the morning." She grabbed another, only this time swiped it against his face, attempting to get the cream on his mouth and chin area before taking a bite. "Oops~ Mind if I clean that up?"

He was surprised by the sudden intrusion of pastry being mashed against his face, and was about to read up and wipe it off when he stopped his hand at Rin's request. He smiled, about to lean in, when he thought of the pair of them having already eating and his skin being licked at.
Would she...hate him for wiping his face after she cleaned him? Then again, denying her would be just as worse.
A bit more tense than before and trying to mask his own concern, he leaned in. "Sure." He said, playing off his own thoughts and trying to act casual.
It would be just a little lick, right? He could handle that - right?

Rin smiled as she leaned in to kiss him on the corner of his mouth, right where the worst of the cream was and then licked the rest up with a feral edged hunger. Wipe all you want Melvin, you are stuck being dirty the rest of this trip - and Rin likes it.
"Tasty," she licked her lips.

He resisted the urge to wipe at his face and slowly sat back down, stiffly, and resumed eating. He could just wipe his face with an napkin when she looked away or went to the bathroom. Yeah. He just had to wait. Keep with the mood. Don't start a fight. Act normal.
He suddenly felt as if he was back in college, or high school for that matter.
"I can think of sweeter things to lick." He said, and popped another forkful of ham into his mouth.
