Jake had felt Sherry tense up after he pulled away, and frowned slightly, wondering if he was pushing things. After he had been pushing her away for so long, and then to all of a sudden be showing so much affection, he could only imagine what was going through Sherry's mind. She must have thought there was an ulterior motive, that after this, she would expect things to go back to the way they were before. It made him a little sad to think this, but he didn't blame her. After everything he did... he still wasn't sure if he deserved to be with her like this.

He was... happy when she hugged him, and took his hand in hers, but couldn't help but wonder if this was really what was right, if this was what she wanted. Even after she sat down on her bed, he could sense the hesitation, that she was unsure, and he felt a slight ache on his heart. He could... understand she was afraid he would interpret things the wrong way, what with being offered to come into her room, alone, first of all, and then sitting on her bed. Not to mention the clothes he was wearing probably made this feel a lot more intimate than it should, which may have led to the discomfort she felt.

As she sat on the bed, pushing herself back, he paused, wondering if he should still stand, keeping that distance so that she didn't feel uncomfortable. If she felt this uneasy, maybe... he shouldn't sit on her bed. He didn't want her to think the wrong thing.

With some reluctance, he turned around, pulling the chair behind him, bring it close to the bed, and sat on it. At most, his knees were touching the bed, and he was close enough that he could talk to her easily, still facing her, but not too close to upset her.

"He... I still can't talk to him. I haven't gotten him fixed yet, but I'm planning to... go ask Mark, tomorrow. Hopefully he should know what to do." Part of him was still kind of nervous. What if... he screwed up? What if Chester couldn't be fixed? What if-
No. He couldn't keep thinking this way. He had to believe that Chester could be fixed. He wouldn't feel comfortable pursuing this relationship without him, and... and... if he couldn't get Chester fixed, it would only mean... he didn't deserve to be with Sherry. He wouldn't be able to protect her, forever remaining a burden, a liability. He didn't want that. He didn't want her to have to deal with that.

"Sherry..." he paused, wondering how best to approach this. "I'm... I'm sorry if I'm pushing things too far. I know I just confessed and all, and... I shouldn't be rushing into this, ignoring your feelings." He started to get up, moving the chair so that it was back at her desk, and gave her a sympathetic smile. "I know it's getting late, and... I shouldn't be taking up much more of your time.I guess... I just want to ask that..." His gaze was downcast, and he let out a sigh. "I want to ask that you give me a chance, if... no, when I get Chester back." He had to believe. No doubts. "That's all I'm asking. I won't... ask you to do anything more, and I'm... sorry for making you feel uncomfortable.. Just hearing your answer is good enough for me."
PostPosted: Sat Jun 29, 2013 11:49 pm

She found herself far more disappointed he'd decided to go ahead and sit in the chair again than she would have imagined. There was relief, it meant she didn't have to worry about signals going to far down one particular path, but it still left her... wanting something. Of course, this was Jake, and despite the fact they'd embraced a moment ago, she knew he wasn't too keen on physical contact. Maybe she should--

Her thoughts focused again when he stated speaking. A sad smile on her face as he told her about Chester. "You will have to tell me right away what you find out," she said. "I like Chester." She... didn't know what else to say, really.

So she felt a tiny bit saved when Jake started talking again. For a moment. What? No. He wasn't pushing anything too far. She was the one sitting on the bed, for goodness sake. ........ OH. She was pushing things too far, clearly. Her mind was the one straying down that path, clearly, and he could see it was agitating her. Which was entirely silly and not his fault.

"Jake," she sighed. "You don't have to leave. You can if you want, of course, but you don't have to." She stayed where she was, though by now she'd pulled her knees up to chest. "You're not rushing anything, and you're not making me uncomfortable." It was all her, in her head. Jake wasn't like that, she didn't think. "I... think I'd like you stay, but I don't want to imply... things. I would like your company for a while longer. That...wasn't a very long chat, you know." She gave him a small smile. "But if you're not comfortable, or you have things to do... don't feel like you have to stay." Way to be selfish, Sherry. He has a life too.

He nodded at her request and gave her a small smile. He was sure the nergal would have been more than eager to see her again.

To be honest, he really didn't want to. He wanted to stay by her side, hold her in his arms, kiss her... but it didn't feel proper. Not right now. Not like this. Not until he got Chester back. And though she said one thing, her body language seemed to say another, and he only sighed, slightly frustrated with himself for making her uncomfortable. He only came to tell her the truth, and that was all. He hadn't planned to pursue it further until he knew for sure he had his weapon back, and now... he was only making things more complicated... again.

Another bitter smile, and he shook his head.
"You don't have to worry, Sherry. I won't do anything to hurt you... physically. I suppose I've already done the damage emotion-wise, but..." He wanted to say it wouldn't happen again, but he really didn't know.

It wasn't that... he was uncomfortable (and he really didn't have anything to do), but...
He was very much torn between staying and leaving, but finally decided Sherry probably want some time to herself to think about... everything. The last thing he wanted to do was force her to try and evoke feelings which may have already faded, and as much as it pained him, it wasn't all that implausible.

"Sherry. Don't take this the wrong way. I like you. I really do. I doubt I'll change my mind anytime soon, so if you're worried about that, don't be. But... I know you might not feel the same way, or... maybe not as strongly. The last thing I want to do is make you rush into something you're unsure of. When Chester is back, you can... talk to him more. But if your feelings change by then, I won't force you, and I'll make sure he doesn't force you either. I guess, just..."

Was it too much to ask her to wait?

"Whether it's... only friendship, or something more, I will... accept your feelings. I won't pressure you. I just... want you to be happy."

With that, he turned around, opening the door.

"Good night, Sherry."

Sherry registered the chuckle that rolled through her mind. Armagnac, nearly silent for weeks now, somehow found this amusing.

Sherry didn't. She heard his words and she understood them. He wanted to be patient, to give her time to think. He wanted her to talk to Chester and make sure she knew what she wanted.

Except she already knew what she wanted. She was selfish and terrible, but she knew. Heck, she was pretty sure she knew what she wanted from him right at that moment, too.

"Jake," she said as he was opening the door, "You know my answer won't change, right? It hasn't for ages." She sighed, sliding off the bed again. And so help her if he walked out that door while she was talking, she'd skin him. "Even when I walked away from you, it was because that's what you'd asked for."

"But," she continued, reaching for his arm again. "Here is what you need to know about me. I am incredibly selfish. Armagnac level selfish."

The chuckles still rolling in her brain only deepened.

"And I don't want you to leave yet. I want to sit and hold your hand, and maybe talk a little." Nothing more, nothing less. "I know it's an odd request, so I don't know how to ask for it-" (She just did.) "-and I know you don't like touching and so you can leave if you really want, but I don't want you to."

Armagnac went quiet again, but something in that silence was less angry.

Thankfully, he did pause (he rather liked his skin, tyvm), and turned to look at Sherry, frowning slightly.
"You say that now, but..." His voice got quieter. "People change. Feelings change. Just because you like someone now, doesn't mean it'll still be the same later on. I could do something to really upset you that you decide you've had enough, or..."

He sighed.

"Or... even if I try, danger never seems to elude me. At that time, I might... try to get you to leave again, and..."

His gaze held hers.

"You probably will. If you do, I might... I probably... won't try to seek you out again." His chest still ached, but he was slowly telling himself to abandon these feelings. How could she ever find happiness with him? Even now, she seemed hesitant to be with him, her words contradicting her actions. It hurt him slightly to think that, but... could he really blame her? Maybe he should just leave right now. He shouldn't have came, not until... he got Chester back. He wasn't ready for this.

And then Sherry continued talking, and he grew more confused. It was true he normally didn't like touching, but hadn't he held her in an embrace before, out of his own free will? Hadn't he held her hand, touched her cheek... was that not enough? And yet, it seemed like she didn't want more than that.

"Sherry..." he sighed. "Tell me to stay, or go. Not both. Whatever you tell me to do, I'll respect your decision."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 30, 2013 11:30 pm

She shook her head. "You really don't get it. Think about it. After everything. Everything, and I'm still standing here telling you that I like you." She took his hand in both of hers again. "And if you start trying to tell me about danger again, I'll have Armagnac open up a new hole in your hide." Whether she meant by glaive or by claw, well, that was for her to know. "Because the danger doesn't matter. I have as much chance of dying in this room as anywhere else, honestly." Being a hunter was not safe, ok.

She bit her lip, looking him in the eye and pausing for a moment. She hoped she didn't sound angry. She was a tiny bit grumpy, but more with herself than him. She was the one confused with herself, the one being selfish, and yet she was pressing right on forward. He might as well hear all of it, all at once.

"I like you, I have since I don't know when, and I will continue until who knows when. I'm silly and a hardcore romantic even if no one but Armagnac knows it. I wear that bracelet you got me whenever I can and I haven't taken the necklace off since the ship." Her left hand let go of his, showing him the bracelet under her sleeve as she pulled on her scarf, untying it to show him.

"I don't need to think about it because I already have. Even when you didn't want me, I wanted you, and that's how things are." She was a bit surprised by the fact that she wasn't about to cry. Usually she cried.

"I want you to stay. The hopeless romantic in me wants to sit and cuddle with you all night. I know that's silly because you just told me how you feel. You want to be patient about it. I'm only giving you a choice because," she paused for an intake of breath, "you spent so long telling me you hated me I want you to be sure this is what you want. I also hesitate because I don't want to make you uncomfortable or ask too much of you, and I don't want you to think I want sex because I don't but it's all so fuzzy with implied things, so I want to be clear and comfortable... but I've been messing that up."

Her eyes went to the door, still hanging open, then back to him. "So yes. I want you to stay. I want to sit and hold your hand and lean on you and talk about silly things." It was possible she'd been more candid than intended.

Jake looked as if he was about to say something, but thought better of it, and closed his mouth.
A moment later, he started chuckling.
"I'm sure Armagnac would be more than happy to finish the job."

When she revealed the bracelet, Jake arched his eyebrow in surprise. She... still had something like that? It seemed like so long ago, and he had just... gotten it on a whim, but to think that she still had and wore it...
And then his heart ached when she said that he didn't want her, and he took a step forward.

"Sherry... I..." He sighed. "I never hated you. I hated the fact that you were so stubborn, and that you were willing to put yourself in danger for someone like me, but I never hated you."

And then his cheeks flushed slightly at the mention of sex, and he turned his head away.
"I... haven't even thought that far. I mean... maybe...later on... if you wanted... but-" Oh geez, Sherry, way to embarrass him. "I already told you. I would never force you to do something you're uncomfortable with. I just..."

He paused, glancing at her, and then turned his head away again. Would it be a bad time to say that he wanted to kiss her?

"I'll stay if that's what you want. If you're sure that's what you want."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 9:57 am

The feeling Armagnac responded with confirmed Jake's suspicion. Sherry kept that to herself.

She did a much poorer job of keeping her own feelings to herself. "I know," she said, pretty sure that she looked like she was about to cry. "I know you didn't hate me." She smiled as she said it. She'd been told by Chester and by Jake, more than once even. She knew it and believed it. He'd just tried so hard to push her away that... she was waiting for him to push again. Any second. Was that why she was so reluctant to let him leave? Probably. They'd kissed. The next time she saw him...he'd be telling her to go away again. No, no, no. Not after everything else he'd just admitted to her.

Of course, if she kept letting her words run away with her, or let her actions make him uncomfortable again, he might just change his mind.

"I...didn't mean to infer that you had thought about..." She was blushing rather nicely. She'd gone and said too much and clearly thought too much and embarrassed him in the process. Oh, heavens. What would he think of her now? Childish, selfish, and this. She couldn't even meet his eye. "I wasn't thinking about... I just didn't want any misinterpretations. I know sometimes asking someone to stay might mean... but that's not what I mean. I just want you to stay."

She squeezed his hand, her gaze rising to look at his face again. "I know I want you to stay. Stay with me?"

Before he could stop himself, he pulled Sherry towards him, wrapping his arms around her as he buried his face in her hair.
"If anything, I hate the fact that I keep making you cry. Even when I'm trying to do the right thing, I end up upsetting you."

Stepping back slightly, he looked at her, grinning as her face turned red. She looked like a little child when she was embarrassed. He was going to have to try and make her blush more. "I know you're not that kind of girl, Sherry." It was only then that it had clicked for him why she might have been embarrassed he'd misinterpret her intentions.

"Wait... you want me to stay..." The realization made him blink, and then he laughed, cupping her face in his hands as he leaned down for a kiss. After it had ended, he whispered in her ear, a teasing tone in his voice.

"I don't mind staying, but where am I going to sleep? I doubt your bed is big enough for two."
Of course, he had no intention of sleeping in her bed, because... even he knew boundaries... maybe. And she had explicitly requested that nothing happened. But it was still fun to see what her reaction would be. She had asked him to stay, after all.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:07 am

The hug made her happier than he could know. "I don't only cry when I'm upset, you know. I cry when I'm happy, too." Right then, she didn't need to cry. She was warm and safe and life was good.

But heavens did she blush at his comment about what kind of girl she was. "Of course I'm not. That's why..." That's why she was trying to make sure things were clear. She didn't think Jake was the type to try anything but signals. She was fail at sending them. Any of them.

Though he did seem to pick up on one. "Yes--" She would have said more, but his kiss interrupted her. Not that she'd complain.

They were going to have to discuss him whispering in her ear at some point, however. Not tonight....she'd already embarrassed herself once. He didn't need to know it sent shivers down her spine.

"I was thinking," no, she really hadn't been thinking...if she had she might not kept sending signals all over the place, "the bed would be just fine." She wanted to be close, ok. Maybe she should invest in a teddy bear? Jake made a good argument, though. "I suppose, if that's not good... we could sleep on the floor?" It would be like camping. Only not at all. "Oh, dear." She flustered, making sure the door was shut for something to do while she tried to think of a good solution to this problem. She might have been bright red at this point.

"I still prefer seeing you smile than cry." he mumbled, eyeing her curiously to see if she was going to suddenly burst into tears. There was a bit of relief when she didn't, and he only watched as she moved to close the door, grinning once more when her face resembled a tomato. He was having too much fun teasing her. At least... that was something deemed not crossing boundaries, right?

"How about... I sleep on the floor, and you sleep in your bed? Problem solved." When the door was closed, he stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her from behind. "But before we talk about this further, I think you should set down some rules." His hands were wrapped loosely around her stomach. "I'm afraid I might cross some boundaries if I'm around you too long."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 2:40 pm

"That would work," she admitted about sleeping arrangements. It was also probably the most reasonable course of action. "But I--"

She froze when she felt his arms around her; when she felt his hands at her stomach. "Rules?" she repeated. Her hands moved to cover his, and she relaxed a bit, leaning into him. "This... this is fine. Sleeping next to you is fine. Being next to you is fine." She squeezed his arms too her. "This is fine. But I don't think I want a whole lot more... touchy than this. Not... until we've talked some."

When Sherry leaned into him, he flinched slightly, but relaxed momentarily. It seemed this was something both of them was going to have to get used to slowly. He lowered his head and brushed his lips against her cheek, a very faint touch.

"And this?"

He knew what she wanted, but what she asked for, and what she expected seemed to contrast with each other.
"You know, being next to you and sleeping next to you are two different things in itself. I can't guarantee anything."

A pause.
At this, Jake was thankful Sherry's back was to him so she couldn't see him fluster.

"... I tend to fidget in my sleep."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 8:53 pm

She hoped like hell he couldn't feel the shiver that ran down her back at that faint whisper of a touch on her cheek. She didn't want to push things, or have him think less of her for anything. Still, she answered him truthfully. "That's allowed," she responded, a bit quieter than she would have liked.

She found her voice in time for her next response, however. "Are they? Really all that different, I mean? To me they seem very similar, though... I do see how they might not be." She was doing it again. She didn't seem to think there should be much of difference, but that was because she was silly and selfish, and she told herself as much. Though as his words sank in she went a deeper shade of red. "Fidget?" The question was more an automatic response as her brain searched for time. "I don't sleep much." It was a lame counter, but she used it anyway, like it somehow mattered.

"Do..." She sighed, leaning against him and conceding defeat. She thought she knew what she wanted, but she wasn't sure, not entirely. Maybe this was a bad idea, but maybe she didn't care. "Do we really need rules? Can't we just agree not to make the other uncomfortable? Take it slow? I just want to be close to you, Jake. That's all I really want right now. And to talk and maybe have a kiss or two, but beyond that, I'm not sure. Other than what I said no to earlier." She could be clear about that much.

"You," she paused for the briefest moment, "can sleep where you want, you know. It's your choice. If you think it would be a problem, then I won't push it."

Oh, dear. She couldn't help but think she was making it worse. She was constantly contradicting herself. No wonder Jake was confused.

Fortunately (or unfortunately?), Jake had felt the shiver, considering she was still pressed against him, and made a mental note not to push it any further. Her response to his question didn't help reassure him much either. If he stayed here, he had a feeling neither of them would get any sleep... though not for the reason she feared. He had been about to let go of Sherry and move back, but she was still leaning against him, and... it would probably be in poor taste if she ended up falling because of him.

Jake stayed silent through Sherry's explanation, only nodding slowly. He removed his hands from her stomach and placed them on her shoulder so that she wouldn't fall when he moved away, and so that she knew he was moving away.
"So what did you want to talk about?"

He did like Sherry, a lot. But it seemed this was... becoming inconvenient. Perhaps when Sherry started getting drowsy, he would just... slip out without her noticing.
