Sasha shifted to give him a ghost of a smile. There was no real warmth to it, but then again it was hard to feel anything that wasn't abject depression and utter sadness. She wasn't emotionless - the emotions were there, it was just difficult to sort them out.
"Please promise not to tell anyone about this? I.. I don't want anyone to know, especially about Nona, Jerry, I just," she cleared her throat and averted her gaze, "I need to keep things private."

"I can keep a secret." he murmured, glancing back up with an honest, if distracted expression.

"I know you can."
Sasha watched him tentatively, a frown marring her brow. What was on his mind?
"I'm.. I'm sorry to drag you into this. I understand if you'd r.. if you'd rather not get involved, Jerry."

"The important thing is that you're okay, and now you'll know what we'll be up against this time." He tried to brighten his smile, as though this was all part of a normal day.
He fidgeted, expression dipping at the edges. "I'm... glad you.. trust me."

Something about his expression caused hers to fall.
"This has been," she murmured softly, turning to peer out over the ocean, "a .. very humbling experience, Jerry."
Sasha closed her eyes and inhaled the briny sea air before exhaling slowly.

He fell quiet, watching teh water with her for a few moments, mulling it all over. He was sorry she had had to go through that but... at the same time, perhaps it was a good thing. He immediately internally reprimanded himself for the thought, instead pursing his lips against the salty breeze.
"You were my best friend, once."

Sasha dug her toes further into the cool sand.
"I know. People change. I'm still not.. I'm not who I used to be."
She shook her head and finally opened her eyes, rolling her head to the side to peer over at him.
"I don't think things will ever be the same, you know?"

Sasha fell silent and turned her attention back out to the ocean.
A few moments passed before she spoke again.
"I'm sorry."

"You have nothing to be sorry about," He fidgeted, debating if he should excuse himself or not. On one hand, things were growing more awkward, but on the other.... he missed her company, and hoped that under the circumstance... maybe she missed his as well.

Sasha glanced over at him and briefly watched him fidget before sweeping her gaze down to her feet.
"If you say so, Jerry." She shook her head and lifted her eyes back up towards his face. After watching him for a short stretch of time, Sasha offered a tired half-smile.
"Thanks for listening to me, for being there."

"Of course," He smiled shyly up at her before back to the sand. "Again, thank you for... for trusting me. I know things were... um. That I wasn't... that I'm generally not um." He picked at the rough texture of his scarred cheek.
"Always, Sasha. Any time."

Sasha focused once more on the ebb and flow of the sea.
"I think.. it's safe to say we both have done things that... we aren't necessarily proud of."
Her voice was soft.

"Mmm." His brows knit, a dozen things spinning through his head, but he was too exhausted of it all.
Instead, he closed his eyes and listened to the music of the waves. He wondered if she could hear it the way he did. Maybe at one point, but she had made it clear what she thought about that sort of thing, so he kept it to himself.

Sasha fell silent as well as she closed her eyes and rested her chin on her knees, arms tightening against her shins.
It was nice just to be able to sit, to listen to the constant roar of the waves. The white noise filled the emptiness in her head, and for a while she allowed herself to pretend that she was whole.
