"Whoa, really?" Heidi looked very interested in this. She had never left the east coast before now--wait..were they still technically on the East coast? They were in the bermuda or something, right? Hm. Regardless she wanted to hear about the places he'd been, especially overseas. "That is so cool."
The promise of movies was nice. What kind of selection did this place have? "Thanks! Black's fine. It's how my dad drank it and I usually just had what he had so I'm used to it." She took the mug and sipped carefully at the drink so as not to burn herself, looking to Tuck again as he continued on about planning a party for her. Man, he was serious about this!
"That's some pretty good advice, my best friend's mom said pretty much the same thing going up." Heidi adjusted to sit indian style in her chair, her elbows on her knees. "I'd totally try and do the same for you, yeah. And you're right! Man, I should get to know more Moons to..it's best if we all know each other, yeah? Like, family or something." That was important! You couldn't work properly as a team with people you didn't know!

He didn't divulge more information about his travels - instead, he focused on what Heidi said, diverting attention away from himself and back to her. Whether it would work or not was an entirely different question, but it was worth a shot.
"That's how I look at it, yeah - I mean, we're out there on the front lines, gotta look out for one another. It's important. That's what I loved about the Army. We all had each other's backs. Was like this huge brotherhood. I feel like it should be the same way here, you know? Like, granted, we gotta look out for everyone else, too, but we gotta take care of our own at the same time, you know?"
He chuckled softly.
"You jog? I try t'get out in the morning before everyone else is up. Welcome to join me if that's up your alley. The beach is real nice."

A brotherhood, huh? That sounded nice! "Mm, yeah. We're the main line of defense sooo..yeah...it makes sense. It's like in WoW. Don't piss off your healers, man." Heidi grinned. She couldn't see herself actually applying that little rule to life but it was still okay to joke, right?
"I don't jog as like a daily thing but I'm cool running and stuff. But sure! I'd be totally up for joining you!" On mornings she woke up in time. They needed to train, right? Morning jogs sounded good for keeping fit. "What else does Mister World Traveler like to do?" Football, the army, jogging, movies..what else? Music?

WoW, huh. He'd known a few guys in basic that had played. College, too. It'd never been up his alley.
"I'm a man of simple pleasures," he grinned, palming his mug of coffee before lifting it to his lips. Tasted like s**t. Tuck set the mug down with a rumble of a sigh.
"Good food, good friends," Tuck's grin grew wider, "pretty girls, so long as they don't get me into trouble."
He shrugged.
"What about you, short stack?"

Heidi drank the coffee despite the taste. She didn't like wasting food, so she would suffer through it...and then possibly see if anyone knew where to get actually decent tasting coffee. "Well I can agree with the first two, not so much the third one. I always got along better with guys than the girls I grew up with." She shrugged and didn't seem at all bothered by it. So she related better to guys. That was just how that worked.
"Movies, books, music. I just like hanging out, really. My best friend's mom was pretty much my mom growing up, she was always telling me to enjoy my younger years and do what I wanted within reason. Don't grow up too fast, y'know? So I did that." And now she was here. But she could still not grow up too fast, right? Just because she was eighteen didn't mean to had to get entirely mature yet. She hoped.

Tuck listened to Heidi with great interest, watching her as she drank her coffee.
"What happened to your real mom? Your dad? If it's too personal, I get it. We all got stuff we'd rather not talk about. Only askin' because I'm curious."
He offered her a grin. It was obvious he didn't think there'd be a real issue - Heidi seemed pretty laid-back - in fact, he wasn't real used to girls being so relaxed. Back home he'd always gone for the more high-maintenance women, and they'd been nothing but trouble.
"Life's too short t'grow up fast," he added, "you got that right."

Whoa there cowboy, that really was a personal question. "That's not exactly first date conversation," Heidi teased with a grin, sipping at her coffee some more before she set it down on the table. She shrugged. "Eh. She and my dad split when I wassss..ffffiiiiive? I think that's how old I was. She moved..somewhere." She waved her hand dismissively as if it made no difference to her where. Sure, every now and then she wished she'd known her own mother but it wasn't as if she didn't have a nice mother figure in her life. One who cared and loved her. "My dad wasn't really all that great at being a dad, but he must've been pretty good if he won a custody battle over my mom, eh? S'no big. I had my brother, and my best friend's mom pretty much raised me. I used to spend, like, entire weeks at their house sometimes. She used to joke I was just another daughter to her, and she let me call her mom. It was nice. He tried, I guess, but he could'a tried harder. I'unno." Again Heidi shrugged. Throughout the whole explanation she didn't frown once. Her voice didn't break, she didn't falter or get quiet, she was just very matter-of-fact. It was how things had been, it wasn't like she could change them especially now that she had chosen this. Besides, she had planned on moving out when she was eighteen anyway.
"Back atcha, Forest." Get it? Forest? Trees? They were tall. "Mom and sister? You got a dad? Brothers? The family dog?"

Her comment about first date conversation had him tossing his head back in a laugh, and Tuck slid down in his seat as he crossed his arms behind his head.
"My mom and dad were sweethearts from high school or something. They been married a long time. Still were, last I heard. Mom's a fan of them little yippy dogs that she carries around with her everywhere. Before I left for college she was tryin' to convince my dad to get her a stroller so she could put 'em in there."
He lowered his arms to cross them over his chest.
"No other siblings, just Natalie. Gnat. G-N-A-T. Like the bug. S'what I call her." Tuck beamed.
"Came up with that myself."

Aw, that sounded sweet! High school sweethearts who stood the test of time~. Haha. "Cute! I was going to get a dog after I moved out, but I prefer big sturdy dogs. Like a lab or a shepherd." A..stroller for a dog? That was a new one for her. Heidi laughed at the idea. "Sounds like um...what's it called? When all of a mother's babies are leaving...uh..oh! Empty nest! The dog became her new baby." Empty nest syndrome or whatever. Did she even dress her dog in little outfits? That would be pretty dang adorable, dude. Heidi was completely straight-faced as she lied her butt off. "You are the most clever man on this entire island, Tuck." Yup. Sure are. Totes. She grinned again. Finally she finished the coffee and almost looked relieved when she had. She was glad she was having it just as a drink and not as a pick-me-up or that would call for a reeeeeally bad morning. On the one hand it made sense, buy the cheap coffee in bulk to provide for an entire island of people, if people wanted better stuff they had to pay out of their own pocket, but on the other hand...it sucked, dude. "I don't know about you but I think I'm going to look into how to get a better source of caffeine after this."

Tuck roared with laughter at her offhanded compliment. "You're a sassy one, short stack. I like that about you." He kept grinning like an idiot even as he continued talking. "Yeah, that's what my dad kept sayin'. Always acted like it was this huge deal for him, her and her dogs, but I know that man would have given my ma the moon on a platter if she asked for it. They always hoped me n' Gnat would find somethin' like that. Their relationship, I mean." He shook his head and shrugged before changing the topic. "Tastes like s**t," he nodded, that huge grin still on his face, "but I bet it's cheap and they buy it in bulk, plus it's free so I ain't gonna complain too much."

"Thanks, I try. I make up for my lack of height with my wit and charm. Try not to fall in love with me, I'm bad news." She even put a hand on Tuck's arm and gave him the brooding look of regret a sparkly vampire would give a girl he was going to stalk endlessly anyway so why the hell did he keep telling her to stay away. "I'm no good for you, Tuckella." Nailed it. She let the topic of parents go when it was clear Tuck didn't want to continue down that road, giving his arm a pat before moving her hand away to instead hold her head in the palms of her hands. "Yeah, it's definitely not the best." And then Tuck spoke her thoughts almost verbatim. "You're a witch!" She gasped. " You can read minds!" A moment later she calmed down and appeared to be preening, puffing her chest with pride. "Or great minds think alike." Because she was pretty great.

Her first comment had Tuck wheezing with laughter, the nickname had him doubling over with loud choking snorts. She was so goddamn adorable. "Weeeellllll, let's go with the second option," Tuck finally laughed as he paused to wipe tears off of his face. Did she really call him Tuckella?!
Yes, yes she did. That thought sent him into bellows of laughter once more. He couldn't help himself. "Oh, Heidward."

Tuck's voice went completely falsetto, cracking a few times as he spoke. "Oh, no, Heidward. I need your glittering skin." He cleared his throat and tried again - but when he opened his mouth nothing but a laugh came out, and he slapped his hand on the table. "My ma read them damn books. She was totally team Jacob."

Heidi finally lost it at the declaration of needing their glittering skin. She snorted, which made her just laugh that much harder, and covered her mouth with both hands. She had been trying not to laugh for so long that finally letting it out was like opening a shaken soda; she felt like she might never stop. "I was team rocks fall~." She had to remember not to lean back or she might fall. Oh man. She couldn't remember the last time she had laughed this hard.
