Nachith was wary after seeing some of the others get a taste of the Queen's claws - and one her tail - but he would not abandon this Flight. That would be an insult to the fine lady he was here to give tribute to. To that end, he chose not to follow her every last move as doggedly as some might. When he impressed, it was not by unfailing pursuit, which was difficult for a slender brown low on stamina, but by performing.
Must you be so rough, Shining One? Is that truly what you want? I do not think it is what such beauty deserves. This, and another bugle, were intended mostly to gain her attention in hopes that she would look his way as he dove - not at an angle, but straight and fast, with wings fully tucked - toward the lake. It was only at the last possible moment that he snapped his wings open and 'saved' himself, finishing the maneuver with a roll and a flourish and his own share of ripples.

I like to think I am a handsome beast. Animith called toward her, laughing. But that is for you to decide; it is up to me to make the choice worthwhile for you. My riders sharpest swords does not cut so well as your wit and beauty, pretty Cephieth, or - oof, speed for that matter. right, flying, that was a thing.
The bronze folded his wings and plummeted after her. They flared before she skimmed the surface, high enough up still for him to corkscrew after her. The turns were not as graceful as a green or a blue but he did his best.
This was, after all, for fun.

Cepheith's attempt to dislodge her suitors definitely increased Tyeth's interest in the chase. Here was a Gold who had a devious side to her, though it was rarely shown (in his presence anyway).
Tyeth briefly debated the wisdom of expending energy on such a move, and finally determined it was worth the risk. He folded his wings and plummeted after her, nearly hitting several other dragons on his way down and laughing internally as they barely dodged him or took the unexpected hits with ill grace.
He was not in this race to play nicely with his brothers. He was in this race to win.

Ouch! He got a face full of gold tail as she changed direction, one that nearly arrested him in his tracks to keep himself from accidentally plowing into the queen. That wouldn't have been a 'catch' so much as a 'complete failure'. I was asking for that one, the bronze admitted, still not particularly distressed or deterred.
Still, it cost him valuable time, and as he dipped towards the lake it was a little behind some of the other males. He made a magnificent show of it, dropping low to drag his claws through the water in a wave of spray, but some of the others were closer to her...

Calanoth had avoided her claws the first time around. His hide shone clean and bright in the darkening sky, paler than most of the others who followed after him. Still, even he appeared dim as Cepheith herself seemed to replace the sun in the sky as it sank towards the horizon.
He watched her roll and slow, considering if a bit of tricky flying would earn her favor. He did so love to show off. Calanoth bugled and crooned as she slowed, his whirling eyes brightening as she drew closer to him. He thrust himself forward. It was still so soon but if she was ready to make her choice, Calanoth wouldn't argue one bit. Before he had his chance though she was gone, diving down towards the lake and making use of that long tail of hers on the way down.
Calanoth folded his wings and dropped. He followed her arc as swiftly as he could, using only his momentum and the minimum amount of movement before twisting down into another dive. The surface of the lake rose quickly to meet them, a painful impact if any messed up this move. With a loud Crack! Calanoth's wings opened and he just barely pulled up in time, his hind legs and tail creating a spray of water behind him as he let them touch the surface briefly.

Krith had been concentrating so hard on the queen that he missed Pippith lashing out, and the bronze's claws slashed him. It was minor pain, and Krith merely roared at the bronze angrily, before resuming the chase.
He would have to forgo the dive, so instead he began to fly upwards, arcing gracefully towards the queen.

MINE! Devith roared suddenly startling awake and rising to his feet wings flared at the gold's challenging cry. Cephieth was rising and the silver would be thrice damned if he allowed his rider to be wounded so deeply a second time. Startled by the combined scream of the gold and her own silver Hekate herself jerked awake from where she'd drifted to sleep reading a scroll Dizzian had loaned her.
What! What on Pern is~ But Hekate never finished as the little black flit appeared chirruping with a mixture of concern and adoration for his favorite treat giver a flash of Hekate and Z'fer rushing towards their shared Weyr.
She rises Mine. I'll not make you wait again. Devith rumbled lowering to allow Hekate to vault onto his back.
"Take me Home my life." She urged even as Devith dug his claws into the sandy earth Hekate gripping his sides hard with her knees as the silver took off at the same break neck speed he'd shown at their fateful lesson. Weaving and turning the pair ate up the ground between them and their Weyr leaving Hekate to slide from her dragons back stumbling in the door with a look of worry hoping her weyrmate had made it back in time.

Cepheith was quite pleased to note that some of the Brown's were still in the running. She was not biased and liked both Bronze and Brown alike. She chortled, glancing back at Hatteth with appreciation. Yes. He was definitely a possibility. And dear Nachith too. But were they the right one? It was still too early to tell! But she was starting to calculate who her top choices might be...
Indeed you were, Tauvolnath! A pause. And much amusement. I think you are a handsome beast. Cepheith informed Animith. But I could claim the same for Plexith, Calanoth, and even sweet Nachith! What will make you different, hmm?
Ah! There was a familiar voice! The Gold dragon crooned, honey-warm tones wrapping around Plexith. Then I shall shine and glow just for your pleasure. She purred in response, before her attention was once again caught by a different Bronze.
I would not disagree, my Bronze. Come for me then! If you are what I deserve. She sent her friend encouragement with a little teasing added in. Truly, she did care for the little Bronze. But was he the right Bronze? That was what she was seeking. Only the right suitor would win her tonight! Fly swiftly for me, Pipith~
And then she was laughing, letting the tips of her wings dip into the water to spray the one that was closest behind her. Fancy flying is not all that you'll need to win me, Calanoth. Cepheith rumbled, eyes narrowing as land came closer. But instead of pulling up, the Queen stayed low. Even as the trees of the jungle came upon her fast. Show me how well you fly! She challenged all of them, flying right into the jungle.

As ever, whatever you ask will be done, my Queen, Pipith pledged, the request fueling a surge of speed that was unwise when flying into a jungle.
Theoretically, Pipith should have been good flying through the jungle, at least compared to the other bronzes. He was, much as it often pained him, smaller, and so it should have followed that he flew past them all and won the day. And, most importantly, the girl. The advantages of relative size and desperate want, however, were no match for sheer bad luck...and maybe a slight miscalculation, but he would claim it was misfortune and nothing else that caused his wingtip to clip a tree and very nearly send him into a painful crash.
A crash he did, fortunately, manage to avoid thanks to his apparently otherwise useless agility, but correcting for his (still pretty painful) mistake caused him to drop even further behind.

She thought he was handsome! And sweet! If he weren't so busy flying, Nachith would have preened, but had to settle for crooning. Oh, he knew he was handsome, but it was always an ego boost to hear it from an admiring female. Granted, she had said it about several others as well, but he'd merited a 'sweet' as well. He'd take what he could get!
Especially since he was doing this for fun, more than anything. Dodging trees was not usually included in his definition of fun, as he preferred showy displays to reckless stunts, but the lady wanted what the lady wanted. He wove his way through the natural obstacle course without incident, staying close, but not too close.
If you want to see how well I fly, my lady, this is hardly the setting, he teased lightly. There is no room for grace here, nor can the sight of you be properly enjoyed.

I use bigger words. Animith said in as serious tones as he could muster. He laughed, slightly dizzy from his own fancy flying. Intelligence is a good thing to pass on, you know, we'd have the smartest hatchlings ever known.
And he swore, loudly (and thankfully just to L'ib), when the jungle came into play. The brown flailed some and id his best to dodge the trees, huffing.
Shaffing jungle.

Is that so Cepheith of the southern sun? Calanoth rumbled as he shook the water from his face. Is it words that Impresses a lovely beauty like you? Calanoth thrummed. I am drawn to you as the night bugs are drawn to the light of a flame. As the waves are drawn to the shore, and as we dragons are drawn to our bondeds. On this night you are the sun, the moons, the stars and the lifeblood of my world. I would make you mine if you would deem me worthy.
Calanoth's deep mental voice took on a sharper, vicious tone and a hint of red tinged his eyes. Or is it strength that stirs your fiery ichor to passion? These others. They are as nothing to my claws and teeth. I would turn the lakes green with their ichor for you. With a roar he raised his tail and kicked out at the closest dragon to him, his talons raking deep lines across exposed hide.
Common sense said rise above the trees, save his strength. He was so tantalizingly close though. Calanoth wouldn't give that lead up for nothing and so he dove head first into the foliage, passing where Cepheith passed and despite the instant abrasions from sharp branches and rough bark, he stayed true to his words.
Z'fer was waiting for Hekate when she arrived. Of course he'd made it back in time. Self preservation was a strong instinct, even in the face of flightlust.
