Arachnae watched him, following him the few paces until they both stopped. She looked at the ground below her, scratching a furrow nervously. "Because... because no one has tried to take care of me besides my family.. and because, besides being a Sixer you've been oddly kind to me... and..." She kept her gaze averted. "If there is a chance I'm pregnant.... I don't want to be alone..." She said the last part softly in a near whisper before she began walking North, working her limp out as she did so.

Vulnerable. She was acting vulnerable. What happened to her strong facade? Fear. She was scared. It was as if she instinctively knew that he was protecting her--would protect her from whatever attempted to hurt her. "... You won't be." He almost wanted to do something affectionate, but he didn't need her trying to pull her tough act back on to save her pride. "At our current pace, we should reach the border between the Six's territory and the neutral lands in two or three days."

Two or three days? How had she gotten out this far? She hardly remembered traveling that much, but maybe she had traveled faster and farther than she had first imagined. She let out a sigh and nodded, walking North with him by her side in a soft silence. She was unsure of what to say, do, or even how to act. This male completely unnerved her and made her feel dumb, like she had not sense at all.

D'von resisted the urge to sigh again. Why was this so much harder now? When they'd been flirting with each other--well, more like him responding to her flirting--it had been so easy, so natural. He couldn't find a single word to say, so he just let his actions speak for him. The stallion stopped whenever Arachnae required it, proving to be surprisingly patient with the injured mare. The figure in the distance was now behind them, but much closer than before. When night came, he was relieved. It wouldn't be a peaceful night for him, but when his companion woke up, all that would be left of the battle would be a bit of blood on his pelt--hopefully. If it was a tougher opponent, they might actually cause some damage. Well, he'd find out soon enough.

Nae ended up having to stop early for the night. Walking while injured was painful and took a lot of energy. She was surprised at how tender the male was being, but kept her thoughts to herself as she hobbled along. Finally stopping she curled up in the still warm sand beneath her hooves and drifted off to sleep, her pink eyes closing almost immediately upon laying down.

The instant Nae was asleep, D'von was off. He met the stallion who'd followed them halfway, not wanting him anywhere near the injured mare. The instant the stallion started talking, D'von's blood boiled. The other Azrien wanted a piece of his mare. "Over my dead body."

~

By the time he returned to Arachnae, the sand had gone cold. He laid beside the mare to prevent her from shivering, though he moved away right before sunrise. His pelt had quite a number of small gashes in it, but D'von didn't complain. Only a few more days, and they'd be somewhere where fights like this would be once in a blue moon. All they had to do was get across the border.

Nae woke up the next morning, a large yawn stretching her maw as she looked around. The night had passed pleasantly enough. No fighting between her and the dragon male, no night-terrors and she had been pretty warm, though she contributed that to Dvon cuddling her in the middle of the night, as she had woken up to see. Nae had slipped back off to sleep, though, not wanting to let the male know she knew.

Speaking of which, she turned to look at him as she stood up, finding small gashes upon his body. "Dvon?" She said softly, uttering his name for the first time, "Are you okay? What happened?"

"I got in a fight." D'von shrugged, ignoring the protest of his wounds. They would heal soon enough; although he inherited little appearance-wise from his father, he did get his quick healing trait. "It's nothing serious. It was just a moron who pissed me off."

Arachnae eyed the stallion suspiciously. "Thats it... He pissed you off... So you got in a fight... Seriously?" She asked, hardly believing that anyone would truly get in a fight with something as stupid as that. Stallions..." She huffed out, rolling her eyes and starting North again. She had gotten a fairly good look at his wounds and decided that the scratches were hardly anything. Hers were worse than his.

"I'm a southern stallion: since when do I need a reason to fight?" D'von was quiet for a few moments, then added, "Though I do enjoy having one. It's more satisfying than 'I fought this Azrien because I felt like it'." Protecting her was his real reason, but he felt uncomfortable trying to tell her that. Arachnae didn't want to be alone, but that didn't mean she wanted him. Considering how often they pushed all the wrong buttons, he doubted this temporary relationship would last long. "Where is the final destination, anyway?"

Arachnae shook her head. Southern stallion. Like that explained anything. Northern stallions weren't any better. When he asked for the final destination, fear claimed her heart. "My mother's herd..." As she said it, she realized it probably wasnt a good idea to take him there. News was, her mother had Chosen and her family had moved onto Dea's lands. Nae didn't want to bring any bad things that way, so she needed a new destination, but for now, she would head that way.

D'von could see the fear in her face. Ah. They were going far north. Well, he'd done it before... Though just thinking about that made his skin crawl. They'd just have to deal with the details once they got out of the south...

~

A few nights later, D'von woke to the smell of smoke. A fire? The plains didn't get fires this time of year. And they weren't near the border anymore where the fire-wielding Azrien were. None of them would've come past the border. None except--
"... S**t." The stallion carefully removed himself from Arachnae's side, scanning until he saw what he dreaded to see: the demon of the fire-wielding Azrien, Ruin. He was much too close. D'von couldn't let him come closer. He ran to meet the approaching menace so that he didn't come within firing range of Nae. Sticking himself squarely between Ruin and Arachnae, he spoke. "... What do you want, Ruin?"

Ruin cackled, the fire rumbling inside him like a hot forest fire. "You are a spitfire. Just like your mother was, Dvon." His firey tail swished, lighting some sand behind him on fire, burning it down to hardened glass. He lifted his head to the air and took in a deep breath. "Even with my sulfur like smell, I can smell that little whore." He said as he breathed out, stepping forward with his words. "Move kid. You don't wanna get hurt, and I am rather fond of you.' He said, his words glittering like black eyes, his glowing red eyes emitting flames themselves.

D'von's eyes narrowed into slits when his mother was mentioned. "Thanks," he drawled. "I love being told I act like the demon spawn I was born to be." The smelling comment made his blood boil. Instead of stepping aside, he stepped forward, glaring into those flaming eyes. "She's mine. Back off." His mother would've called him reckless, would've beaten him for acting impulsively. And he would've submitted. But his mother wasn't here: Arachnae was. He was going to protect her like he'd sworn in his heart that he'd do. He couldn't afford to lose, not even to Ruin.

Ruin cackled again, his flames leaping up and down his skin until it seemed he was engulfed in one large raging inferno. The ground underneath him crackled as he held the fire there, at its hottest. "Its a shame you won't back down, D'von. I was actually thinking of a particularly powerful female I could introduce you to... but if this is your path..." He grinned and rammed into the dragon, his flames leaping over and engulfing the male.

Little known to the two males, Arachnae had woken and silently followed D'von. Her legs had been healing nicely and she was able to support her full weight now, if not travel very far. But she could still move, and her steps were now able to be controlled and silent. She stood a distance away, careful to stay out of the way as she watched Ruin attack D'von. In her heart she figured the dragon was doomed. She knew what Ruin was capable of.
