Well discussing a game to start is still discussing role-playing, so I don't think it's too off-topic myself. Details might be better off in their own thread, to keep down on clutter. I tend to play fantasy oriented stories myself, or ones with supernatural things going on. I can also do soft sci-fi (since it's practically fantasy, with SCIENCE!). Had a tragedy game going once, but it was kind of hard to keep up; tragedy is depressing to write, after all.

If you do a mystery game, it could help to have someone arranging a plot behind the scenes. Otherwise, it would be a lot of fumbling around and making stuff up on the go. Not that making stuff up on the go is bad, haha, but good mystery writing usually takes extra effort. But it's all about fun in the end, I believe.

You are right! I was just thinking advising against not starting one here. Not that I think anyone would mind (And its not my thread anyways) but I thought that multiple discussions for our individual projects would be more suitable. But I am fine either way!

Hahah I love your description of sci-fi--with SCIENCE! blaugh
I really will play anything as long as the other players are good writers and you all seem like splendid players! heart
I would imagine that a tragic RP would be hard to keep up with! I don't how many members would even join up for doom and gloom. What was the plot for it? I am rather interested!

Yes, you are quite correct. Mystery, conspiracy, detective and intrigue stories are difficult to freely write for. I usually combine a mystery story idea with a "search" story with different factions built into the plot. The characters are divided up by why they are seeking the subject in question (Person, place or thing) and they basically follow clues from there.
I have done such an RPG before but not with the greatest success. I was able to get 106 replies in 8 pages though.
I think the problem was exactly the one you pointed out. A GMPC plotting things out, leaving clues and even attempting to manipulate the other characters would definitely correct this.

Yes! It is all about fun! I bet we could each combine our ideas together to come up with something really fun! A Mystery/Fantasy with neko people! It would definitely be a fun play! 3nodding

My characters each have their own personalities, but I suppose a bit of myself is in each of them as well. They each have their own mannerisms that come to life, and all respond to different situations according to their own experiences.

Yes! See I think that is the best part about an RP is the ability to bring a character more realism through how they react. So many times unexpected situations come up in the course of the game and our characters have to react to them as their personalities dictate (that's why its easier to play a bit of your own character, because you don't have to think too much about how you would react to certain situation)

It's a challenge but it is great fun!

What are your favorite genres for role-playing?

The tragic game was Pokemon related (about 75% of mine are, due to where I mostly play). It was going to take place over three days at a festival, when a computer virus gets released that kills the majority of the Pokemon whose Pokeballs get afflicted, leaving most of the survivors weakened and scarred. Kind of a horrific thing. We got around to the first few Pokemon falling ill before the game stopped.

And here I am with a neko avatar today, lol! Actually, animal people work well with mythological settings too, since then you have characters like bakenekos, centaurs, satyrs, and so on. I think a game with the people here would be fun. I'm running another game myself at the moment, just waiting on a few more SUs to start it off, so I dunno if I could handle running two at once. But I'd look into any you guys start.

I'd probably have to say fantasy in different forms. Medieval, hi-tech, a mix, steampunk, but also a few anime specific rp's. Did a zombie survival one once. Also did an evil circus, and some academy rp's. Those were cool.

Ah, I see. Yeah that would make me sad! Look! I am crying here! crying dying pokemon! Wah! cry

Haha I see that! Yes, they do and they seem to be really popular among most people. Which is a bonus for any RP.
Yes, I think that there is a way (I was discussing this with Ms. Murasaki) that we four could list off the elements and genres that we want to see in the RP and combine them.
We should each list some general themes like sci-fi, fantasy or mystery; some setting themes like modern, med-evil, future or an alternate world [steampunk etc] and some specific themes like robots, animal-hybrids, romance, young adult, magic and so on.

The lists could go one as long as you want and the combinations could be endless! After we discuss our ideas, we could mix and match our different elements and come up with a plot that encompasses them.

Now that's a recipe for one unique RP!

If we do start something, one of the others or myself could take lead on the RP. I am currently in one slow running RP and all this talk has persuaded me to join another! But I probably have more free time than a lot of people! mrgreen

Cool! You have some great starting places already! It seems like all of our ideas are compatible.
Making another universe type would be fun two. Sort of like steam punk or cyber punk. Take a medieval setting and mix in high technology and magic! (zobies optional) Medieval-punk!
Haha!

That sounds cool. The world I created takes place in a different universe, but is connected to our's through a few portals here and there, that's how I got there. My character Nathan is a tinkerer. He loves machinery so much that he has to have a pocket watch on him to hear the ticking. He even has a weapon based on the gunblade from FFXIII, but focuses on magic conduction.

That sounds killer! I always liked the tinkerer characters! And your universe sounds awesome. Is the story based on sliding between the two dimensions?
My characters have always been slightly weak, goofy and nerdy but tend to know more about what is going on than the others. I guess you could say that I usually play smart guys who act like dumb guys. sweatdrop

Well it's not really focused on our universe, it was just something I added to have a reason for me to join in, but not really canon to the story. I've noticed that Nathan works well with alchemy, and the Fullmetal Alchemist world, since he fits around that time era. He also has a steam glove, a weapon I designed specifically for him.

Ah, I see. A way for a character to come from our world into the main setting. That's always a good way to describe an unfamiliar environment to readers, by letting them witness it first hand through a person who knows just as little about it.

That's cool! I love the time period (Kind of WWI era steampunk) from Fullmetal Alchemist.
Coooooool. A steam glove! How does it work and what does it do?

It's a bangle with an amber colored gem. When it accumulates enough power, it can turn into a gauntlet. It has a sort of exhaust thing on the side. This expels steam at a high rate, and allows for incredible surges of speed, and can be used for spin slides, and used to slam into the ground, unleashing a shockwave that cripples enemies nearby.

Totally sweet! I saw your posts at the other RP discussion, there some awesome stuff going on there! I'll drop by when I get the chance

I'm used to keeping RP discussion separate from an RP area, mainly for organization. Whatever works for everybody; I put it here because I thought it was best.

doom and gloom can be fun, but I have to be in the right mood to write it. I much prefer comedy. Although I haven't encountered many comedic RPs, they're mostly dramatic.

Oh, this is most certainly true! I do prefer drama as I don't believe that a straight up comedy RP would have much of a chance.
Of course, dramatic and even tragic stories have their comedic characters and moments. Providing a story with comedy relief is one of my favorite past times!

In fact, that seems to be my role in the RPG I am participating in now. My character is funny...in a jerky sort of way.

Do you have any ideas currently? I would be more than happy to partner up with you on one! I am sure Naga Murasaki and Alex would also be up for it!
Although, things at the other RP discussions have far surpassed me, Alex may be making something there already.

I'm currently running a Pokemon magic game over on another site, and I normally don['t run two at once. But I'll see how the pace of the other game sets itself; if it's not too fast, I might think of trying out one here. Certainly seems like some good people around.

I play a lot of roles and personalities, but I run healers or support characters a lot.
