Because he took too much time lingering behind, he noticed even Barth was up ahead and slowly made his way up to the top, biting his lip as his ears remained pressed back on his head and his eyes focused on the ground.
"There isn't anything higher we have to go on, is there?" He looked over at Barth with a pleading expression. He just wanted back down now.

"No, you know, I think...I think that's it," Barth said, with some surprise. He craned his neck.

Fire. If there was anything that horrified Zar more, he couldn't really think of it. He wasn't an undead, he was a demon, and if anything was probably fairly durable to fire. Normal fire at least. The kind the hunters had used on occasion ripped through him like nothing else and left him with nightmares about it for a while. Books burned easily, and so had his feathers, if he'd been stupid enough to let them take light. But now there were hardly any left.
It didn't take away the fear as he stepped out.

The next few steps reminded him why he'd been so hesitant of fire.
The first hit he felt he was ok, maybe he could make it.
The second, he went up in flames with a hiss of pain.
Fire was not his friend.

For his own part, Barth wasn't opposed to fire. There were some very nice hellfire spa resorts. But the bubbling lava pits were a tad much.
He inched his way slowly across the crackling pit, boiling steam wafting up from the molten mire.
He turned back to ask Calder how he was doing, when there was another hiss- and then everything was an explosion of heat and fire as a wave swept over the walkpaths and dragged everyone left to their deaths.
Barth disappeared in a very unpleasant puff of smoke.

Barth was very disturbed to find himself back at the bottom of the mountain.
Dying was never pleasant. He brushed soot from his clothes.
"The book didn't mention lava pits," he said apologetically.

"Heights. Lava." He hated heights and heat, and here they were again. This wasn't as much as a romantic outing as he wished it would be.

"Oh, and look," Barth said dryly. "Our friend is back."
So was the ooze, a vibrant and evil red. The goolem hulked menacingly at Barth's side.
"Ssstick with him," he told it, directing a leisurely claw in Zar's direction.
This time it was a bull, made from the same temple stones.

Zar gave the ooze a worried look. It looked like it might stain. Pink wasn't a serious colour for a businessdemon.
At least he knew what to do, leaping into action again with nimble speed, closing the distance and with more practice this time falling back and kicking out with his hooves. It didn't hurt this time, there was less urgency, the golem diverting the creature's attention just long enough that he could prance back out of range.

It toppled satisfyingly.

While Zar showed off his impressive nimbleness, Calder had been moving in to use his own swift attack to kick the boar, on to have Zar's attack toss the Boar to the side and making Calder miss and fall into a tangle of vines.

Barth's arm continued to ooze, like a slow and steady drip, until he had another pile of colorful goolems.
"Get it," he ordered.
The bull leaped backwards with surprising nimbleness, and they splashed, spent, at his feet.
"...Damn." Barth slouched. "Eugh. Maybe this is the last one we'll err, have to...? I really did think questing would be a lot less- intensive."

Zar found the goo golems more unsettling than he would let on, but also rather facinating, having creatures to do your work made a lot of sense in the not getting maimed stakes. He'd just have opted for something... well, something a bit cleaner.
Again he turned his attentions to attacking. This time bringing his tail around in a lash like a large and very furious iguana. The cracking sound the strike made certainly wasn't damage to him.
