Rep nodded. "As ready as I'm ever going to be for taking some b***h for walkies." He didn't recheck his things, he was in too defiant a mood. He felt like Jordan's scolding was entirely unreasonable, he though the other hunter hated women too.

Glaring at the portal became glaring at Maddie on arrival. A glare which twisted into the most smug smirk he could manage, his tone sing-song and patronising. "You sure you don't want to stay behind? I'm sure there's some guy somewhere who will look after you while we sort this problem of yours."

Madison raised one eyebrow at Rep. "One hundred percent sure, thanks. But I can go get a strap-on from the quartermaster if it'd make you feel better." Her tone was just as even as before. Because, really, in the douche-lympics, Rep was kind of a lightweight compared to Caelius.

Stay cool and don't lose your temper was the general aim Rep started out most conversations with, it didn't tend to last more than a few minutes. Madison's level remark bypassed all those intentions without even trying. He clenched his hands into fists, another ******** hunter b***h who talked a big game, give them a ******** weapon and they suddenly thought they were equal to guys. He'd learned to tolerate it in Candace and a few others he couldn't change and couldn't beat in a fight either, but that didn't change the raw incandescent fury he felt every time he ran into another confident woman. How dare she?

<>

He couldn't help but snarl, unable to hide his frustration that he couldn't just hit her to take away that indifference to his efforts. "A ******** strap on won't change s**t. They don't cure genetic diseases."

PostPosted: Tue Jan 08, 2013 6:26 pm

Madison shrugged. "Fine by me. Saves me a trip." She held out one hand and summoned her weapon, the four scabbards settling into place around her waist with a soft flare of light. "I've already got four swords, anyway. A fifth wouldn't make a difference."

She gave Rep a coolly appraising look. "Sorry to break it to you, but Caelius is still beating you in the Douchebag Awards. Are you done freaking out that I don't have a Y chromosome yet, so can we go fight the actual enemy here? I'll have your back, because the field is the ********' field and you're a Hunter, not a freak... but I gotta know you'll do the same. If you're gonna have a pissing contest, do it here and leave that s**t behind when we go through that portal."

Obviously, the Rep that Jordan cared for so deeply was somewhere under all that bravado and bluster, or so she assumed. She hadn't earned s**t from him, after all... but that didn't mean she was going to just keep taking his s**t like it was candy.

Harrison shifted uneasily and grumbled something under his breath about agreeing the number of swords didn't making a difference. He settled his hand on the larger hilt at his hip.

Rep smirked at her comment about swords, purring "Spoken like a true whore." in reply. He did quirk a brow at being compared to Caelius, he didn't think the Death leader was a douchebag at all but a ruthlessly efficient bloke kicking the slackers into shape. He decided to take it as a compliment that he was mentioned in the same line of thought and mentally preened a little.

Waving a hand dismissively he went on, "I don't need you at my back, but whatever floats your little pink boat honey. If you want to hide behind me, just say so. I might consider it if you are good."

"Yep, pretty much," Madison outright grinned at Rep's whore comment. As if she hadn't heard that a billion times in high school. "Sorry about all that," she added, glancing at Harrison.

"Ready when you are."

Jordan had missed most of the exchange. It was probably a good thing. He was still on edge when he got to the portal, aware from the tension that something had happened and suspecting that it was something he wouldn't have liked at all. He glanced between Rep and Maddie, his expression flatly neutral, and nodded to Maddie. "Ready," he said.

Rep gave Jordan a decidedly defiant look as he returned. As far as he was concerned he'd been impeccably well behaved, Maddie had just been out for a fight.

"I was born ready."

The field was the field. Madison took a deep breath to center herself before nodding at the others - even Rep - and heading through the portal.

It was like jumping into an ice-cold pool, in a way - the portal seemed to open directly into a wall of fog, cold and wet and filled with shifting shadows and buzzing. Madison winced and hurried out of the 'landing zone', but not too far - the fog was so thick it'd be horribly easy to get separated. She turned, drawing two swords and pivoting warily. The fog was a flawless cover for anything that might want to sneak up on them. s**t.

Something crackled under her feet; she was standing on wet asphalt, or maybe concrete. No time to spare for that right now. But as she turned, adjusting her stance, the ground snapped sharply, like ice breaking-

A rumbling hiss erupted and she swore, jumping back as the ground that had been under her fell away into an exposed crack. Something was hissing forth from it. "s**t - some kind of ******** gas! Watch out!" she shouted, trying to warn the others off as she ran towards where she thought the portal was.

At the immediate hiss Harrison felt light-headed. It was the first EM he'd been on in a while, and it felt like that s**t went straight up through his nose.

"Huh, anck, oh boy- s**t," Harrison held his breath and stumbled dizzily back a few paces, sword raised- he couldn't see a damn thing.

Not good.

The fog was dizzyingly thick, and when Jordan stepped through, he could see Maddie only as an outline in the fog. Harrison was close enough still to be only faintly hazed, but they would have to stay practically on top of one another to stick together. The wet, dank chill settled through clothes almost immediately, and Jordan summoned Ferros as he took a step away from the portal. The bite of cold eased just slightly as the hammer's runes flared.

As Jordan glanced around, uselessly trying to get his bearings in the fog, something rumbled, cracked, hissed, and the faintly seen figure that was Maddie jumped back and shouted a warning. Gas? But he had to breathe, even if the sudden lightheadedness meant that he'd breathed in something bad.

Was that Maddie's figure that was moving forward out of the fog? No - it split in two, becoming one of the shambling things Jordan remembered from that first test after the Strays had woken up. An unnatural mouth gaped raggedly from the thing's chest.

The familiar glow of B0nez's runes slid between him and the thing, deflecting the lash of its claws, and Jordan gave Harrison a crooked grin of thanks. He sidestepped and brought Ferros around into the creature's side - and watched it smoke away into nothingness, as if it had never been there at all. The only sign that he'd hit something was the way Ferros's glow burned brighter, the dragon growling with satisfaction at the taste of Fear.

It was cold when they stepped through the portal, bitterly cold. And it was almost a relief, the muggy clammy island still got to Rep after all this time and out here in the crisp air, even with the laden fog, he felt like he could breathe. He zipped up his jacked and fluffed the fur, Tracey was of little use in the cold - darkness only sapped heat.

It didn't take long for trouble to find them on the other side and Rep snarled under his breath about ******** damsels in distress as he followed the others to the source of the problem.

The sharp acrid scent of the gas hit him right in the senses and wracked him with an instant wave of nausea. He remembered it. It had been present on the other EMs and his heart immediately began to race like he was going into a bad trip, half as a side effect of the chemicals, half in terror and anxiety of what he knew he might see.

And as if in reply to those instinctual terrors, it turned its eyes on him, blue eyes sharp and sunken into melted and twisted features, a tall stretched and distorted corpse that somehow despite its wrecked appearance still retained elements of familiarity to him. Female and terrible. He wanted to close his eyes and not have to fight it, to fight her, his mother was dead, this wasn't her. But every time, time and time again it came back. And he let it swipe him with its claws because he deserved it.

Tracey was somewhere between furious and panic, but it was enough.

He summoned the axe, almost twice as large as he had been, now hooked at both ends and sporting more feathers than ever, he still remained light in Rep's hands, runes thrumming dimly.

No. He was right, it wasn't.

With a snarl of effort and just a bit of anger at his own moment of weakness, he lashed out at the thing.

Madison whirled as she heard the sounds of battle, the others attacking - but she couldn't see them, and the sound was muted, as if it were taking place very far away. A shape split out of the fog and shuffled towards her, and for a moment she thought it was Jordan.

... No. Jordan had a face. Madison took a deep indrawn breath and then regretted it as her vision swam; she lurched to one side and stumbled, her lungs burning.
