I am having a hard time finding this book in French. I can only find it in English and while it is still a great book in English, reading it in the original French is something i feel like I must do to capture the full effect of l'étranger

I finally got the book in French and also CDs with it! Probably will listen to the CDs and then read it. I'm really looking forward to it! whee

I read the English version. It's one of my favorite books!

I started reading this about a week ago! I'm finding the finer points hard to grasp but I do fully understand the gist of it. I absolutely love the first paragraph:
Aujourd'hui, maman est morte. Ou peut-être c'était hier, je ne sais pas.
And so on. <3 I will update when I read more!

I started to read it. I got to like page three and fell asleep (indicative of my amount of sleep, not of the quality of the writing).
We'll be reading that later in the year in French class, granted we don't spend the whole year on Molière's Dom Juan. It's a good thing almost all the kids in the class's level of French competency is that of a French 1 student who's perpetually high. ninja
I agree. Niftiest first paragraph ever.

You know, I don;t really care that nobody's posted here in two years. I have to talk about how amazing this book is.
I read it last year in French. I loved the whole story. I had not really read must existentialist stuff, and when I read it, I kept thinking things would "turn out okay" in the end. Of course, they obviously didn't by most people's terms. But on Meurseault's terms, everything turned out fine. I thought it was interesting how he just let himself go like that. As funny as it is, I kinda know a "Meurseault" in my life. And I can totally see that person doing the same thing. I personally don't agree with everything that M. says, but that doesn't mean his ideas aren't interesting.
What I found most interesting about him was his obsession with things pertaining to the senses. His distinct lack of feeling relating to emotional matters was unusual.
