Lapointe was proud that Delacroix let him take on the task. He called out a greeting to the bird and trotted over quickly. He repeated the message from the original bird as close to word for word as he could. Kalonas on the move, at least three of them. Headed to the Padmapani herd meaning to kidnap one of the herd leaders. When the message was complete he gave the bird a final nod before it zipped off into the cloudy gray sky.
Lapointe stood and watched it go, wondering how far it would get until it spread the message to the next person. It was exciting to think that his words were being carried on wing for miles and miles. "Fly fast, little guy," he murmured after it. Fighting kalonas through bird messengers was an odd way to go about it, but if it worked then it worked.

Hisoka's first reaction when he heard the news about the kalona heading to the pass from the jungle was to worry about his daughter's safety. He could see that Torao wasn't in any better of a state. Torao was planning on marching himself down the mountain to take care of the kalona threats himself, in the shadows, just like old times. "We should send her a bird." Hisoka said in his native tongue as he started off to the nest of crows that served as their own personal messengers. Torao snorted and kicked at a rock but other than that he simply followed along behind Hisoka. "After we send word to the other mountains?" He didn't want to make their daughter seem less important but he got the feeling that this was the way things were going to go. Hisoka nodded to no surprise of Torao's. It was their duty now to make sure all messages were relayed properly. Joining the effort had seemed like the only way to keep tabs on Uwasa while she was off in the jungle. They hadn't wanted her to go but it seemed she had inherited much of Torao's stubborn nature. Hisoka was dead set on performing their duties first, anything personal could come later, as always. Hisoka let Torao relay the message since he was more adept with the local language. Then they directed the bird to Padmapani under orders to go faster than the wind since this was the last chance to make sure word arrived on time to make a difference. Hisoka watched as the crow flew off looking like a vengeful spirit was chasing it down. Once it had made enough progress he turned to Torao, "Now, Uwasa."

The bird found the Padmapani on a chilly morning. Hayagriva stood side by side with Shrivatsa, both talking with their visitor for the day. The flutter Lorenna had dropped by, and as always, Haya was very interested to hear what she had to say. Already they had given and received several messages along her avian information network. Most recently, Haya had launched an alert about a possible kalona on their northern border. He suspected that it had just been Maitreya's imagination working against him, but it never hurt to be cautious. If possible, Shrivatsa was even more interested in what Lorenna had to say than Haya was. For a herd now preoccupied with security, the concept was fascinating. Individually, using the network was little effort for anyone involved. For the small amount of effort they put in, the potential benefits were tremendous. If something like this had existed earlier then Avalokiteshvara might not have died, something that Shrivatsa was reminded of whenever she was reminded of Lorenna and her work.

To say that life had been hectic for Lorenna since she started her little mission would be a gross understatement. She hadn't had a waking moment that wasn't filled with traveling to meet potential links, convincing those links to be part of the chain, or sending out information where it was need through Khaa. It was more work than she had ever anticipated but interestingly enough large numbers of soquili seemed interested in joining her effort. The hardest part of her job was just coordinating the messages. She needed a base of operations desperately but that would have to wait as her network seemed to be at work again.
She watched as the bird landed in the center of herself, Shrivatsa and Hayagriva and introduced itself, "I'm Skipfoot, from the hot springs. Got a message for Hayagriva from Padmapani. Told me that was you." He said looking to the golden stallion. Lorenna pulled up a mental map of her agents and determined that this message came from Hisoka and Torao. She then listened as the bird informed them that a group of kalona was heading up to Padmapani from the jungle. Their believed target was the leader of the herd and the leaders of herds in surrounding areas. The nerve of those kalona was astounding. They had lofty ambitions and Lorenna wanted to show them just how foolish they could be.
"Since I am standing here speaking with the both of you I can safely assume that they have not managed to strike as of yet. This puts us at an advantage." She couldn't help be feel a bit proud to find out that her network was actually effective. "Now, we can come up with a way to stop them."

A group of kalonas. Shrivatsa drew in a breath quickly at the news. This was the first serious threat their herd had faced since Samsara's attack. Soquili had just started to feel safe again, and that tranquility might be about to be shattered. Strangely, even with the sudden revelation of danger, Shrivatsa felt calm. Lorenna was right. It hadn't happened yet. They were warned and most likely with a decent amount of time. Their herd had trained for another attack and had many defenders who knew how to fight a kalona. This time would be different.
"Which leader do they mean?" Shrivatsa looked uneasily at Haya. Both of them could be considered herd leaders. There were even other soquili in the herd that the label could apply to.

Haya wore a frozen snarl of surprise and anger. Lorenna and Shrivatsa speaking snapped him out of it, but he could still feel the fire of anger building in his chest. "For what purpose are they attacking us?" he asked, though he knew the question couldn't be answered. "Why? Do you know if this could be Samsara?" He looked to Lorenna.
Whatever it was, he hoped that the leader they wanted to kidnap was him. He would gladly shoulder the burden of the danger if it meant the rest of the herd would be kept safe.

"I can only make educated guesses here, but if a small group is coming for a leader I would suspect that they are after the weaker target." Lorenna looked to Shrivatsa figuring that she would understand the meaning. Hayagriva was not only large but he was also armed with a kalona's tail. If she had to pick a target he would not be Lorenna's first choice.
"As for purpose," She looked to Hayagriva now. "I really don't know, but if they're coming from the jungle..." Lorenna frowned as her words trailed off. She knew a group of kalona that lived in the jungle. It was the group she had sent Uwasa to keep an eye on. "There's a good chance that it's Xelloss and Othelia or another from their little club." If it was them there was some good news, Lorenna knew how they fought. They would be easier to take down with the numbers Padmapani boasted and a good strategy.

Shrivatsa swallowed. The kalona were after her? And it was Xelloss, too. He was the one who had killed Bodhisattva and attacked Auva on the day of the fight. He was a force to be reckoned with. She gave herself comfort in knowing that he didn't want to kill her, only kidnap, but a lot of very unpleasant things could follow a kidnapping.
Despite himself, Haya felt relief that it was the laughing kalona rather than his daughter. Xelloss had dogged at the Padmapani for years and killed one of them, yes, but he still ranked as easier to deal with than Samsara. It was bad, but it wasn't worst case scenario just yet.
"If we can catch them before they reach the herd that will give us a chance to give them a preemptive strike," mused Haya. "I don't know much about Xelloss other than that he hates the Padmapani for some reason, but even kalonas have to rest. Do you think your birds could form a concentrated net to our north to watch for him coming down from the mountains?"

Lorenna nodded in agreement with Hayagriva. A preemptive strike would be best for them, they wouldn't be expecting it. No one knew about her network yet and the longer she could keep it quiet the better. "I believe that can be arranged easily. I'll just have Khaa fetch them more trinkets for them." Crows were brilliant birds but at the same time they were very simple. If you gave them something shiny they would do just about anything for you. "It might leave us considerably less wealthy by the end of it but if we can stop them it will be entirely worth it." It would take more than the two flocks the Padmapani already had to make a suitable net, Lorenna would have to recruit a few more and she would have to work quickly.
"I'll handle the brids. You two, however, need to prepare all your fighters for this. If we get a large enough number they may balk before they get anywhere near." She paused and considered something else. "You may also want to see to hiding those that don't fight so they do not become targets themselves. Xelloss, in the very least, can fly and I wouldn't put it past him to take out a bystander if he can't get his main target."

"If we hide the others, let's make sure to bring the defenders along until they're safe this time," said Shrivatsa. The last time they had separated out the noncombatants during a battle it had turned out to be a trap. She didn't want to fall into that same nightmare again.
"And we won't leave them undefended," agreed Haya. His thinking had automatically jumped to the same place as Shrivatsa's. It was a quick plan and one that could be set up quickly. They could even send the noncombatants over to the neighboring Miakoda herd for protection. Once they reached Miakoda, their guards could come back to Padmapani territory.
"We have many members that can fly too," Haya said thoughtfully. "We can send them out in addition to the birds."

Lorenna got the feeling that these snippets of the conversation were alluding to something else. She didn't question it. It likely had to do with the other attack. She didn't need to mention it. Giving them guards was sound enough logic. "Alright, this seems to be a sound enough plan. Please send your flying scouts my way. I'll be setting the birds in place." Lorenna nodded her head curtly before heading off to get in contact with the birds. They could do this, they could stop those kalona because her system had worked. Lorenna didn't even try to fight the small, proud smile off of her face.
