Melvin frowned. "We had a nice boat. It was clean, and you just wore gloves when you handle fish anyways unless you want cut. I didn't clean them though." He never liked that part. "I usually just tossed them back unless we were really wanting to fish for something. It was just..." he shrugged. "....relaxing to sit."
At her question, he looked back at her. "Sci-fi. Like, Science fiction movies. Like the Alien series, Predator, Terminator, Total Recall, Star Trek..." He just let his sentence trail, not wanting to list everything. "Ya know?"

Rin stared at him for a good long moment before suddenly squeaking, "There's more than alien?" All traces of the upset moments ago vanished from her face - replaced with excitement again.
"I... I knew there were more Aliens but... what are the others like?"

Melvin nodded. "Yeah. They continued with the story line." She seemed to rather alert now. "You know how Warrant Officer Ripley went into the emergency shuttle and goes into stasis, well, the next movie picks up where they find her. Of course she has to tell everyone what happens, and..." He paused. "Well the rest are pretty much spoilers."
He gave her a pitying look. "You really missed out on tv, didn't you?" He grew up with a small television that he watched at night ever since he was young. Creatures in space always made him feel better than worrying about the creatures right in his house.

Rin was listening with all her attention glued squarely on Melvin. Just mentally encouraging, and then?.. and then?.. and then?.. She immediately wilted as it all came to an abrupt halt, "But... but... I want to know what happens next..."
She accepted it though and put on a brave face, perhaps another time he could tell her? But for now..," Yeah. Couldn't afford one. I only even got to see Alien because I was having a short lived wild streak and snuck in."

"When portals open, I'll see if I can pick up the DVDs. Then we can find a lab room and find a computer we can play it on. I've heard a few techs say they play porn on the computers so I think we'd be fine with actual movies." That was, WHEN the portals opened. It seemed forever since he had a nice, normal day in the real world.
The path soon opened up to the beach, the tide rolling onto the bright sand. Despite the fog, it was still warm here and he walked to the sand before looking around. "Seems no one really comes around here." He hoped it wasn't dangerous. "Let's head that way." He said, indicating some rocks further down the beach. He didn't like being directly in front of the path and wanted to be a bit out of the way.
When they made it there, he set his bag down and pulled out a bottle of water, taking another out, twisting the cap to loosen it, and offering it to Rin.

"I can't wait!" Rin really couldn't. She was humming with excitement at the possibility of many more aliens. That and swimming in the short term. Swimming was awesome too, just not quite alien-grade awesome.
She followed after him and his lead, setting her towel down beside his bag to take the offered bottle and after sitting so she could place the bottle between her knees, cracked the cap off the rest of the way so she could take a swig. The walk down there was warm and pretty exhausting. She put the cap back on and placed the bottle on her towel so it wouldn't get covered in dirt.
"So... ready to swim?"

Melvin riffled through his bag, pretending to be more busy than he was. "I'll be right there in just a second. Just go in. " He didn't look at her, glancing to see if she went far enough away. "Tell me if the water is fine." He informed her, hoping to get her away and in the water by the time he went over.

Rin did wander over and stick a toe in. She did not actually enter the water though before turning to shout back, "It's cold, but not too cold!"

He knelt down, undoing the tie to his sneakers, his back to her. "Go head in. I'll be right there!" He called back, not looking at her.
It's about the scar, isn't it?
I don't like swimming with people.
Everyone else has scars. You shower with naked dudes all the time.
That's showering and there is a unspoken rule you don't let your eyes wander.
Well she has scars. I can see them from here.
Yeah, scars she got while being here. I got mine before.
So? What's the -
Saliva! I don't want to talk about this. That's the end of it.
He undid one sneaker, took off a sock, and did the other.

Rin wasn't very obedient. She simply sat just at the waters edge, facing Melvin's direction as the water brushed against her with each soothing wave. She wanted to wait for her friend and did so calmly.

When his sneakers were off, shirt pulled off, glasses off, and he put on some sunblock, he looked to see that Rin was still meandering around the edge of the water. If she had apprehensions about swimming, he wished she would just make and excuse and leave already.
Reluctantly, he took off the towel that had been handing around the back of his neck, tossed it down on his bag, and just started walking. He's plan was just to walk to the water and keep on going.
"Are you going to go in or aren't you?" He said to her as he passed, a sense of direct, focused purpose as he didn't even look at her and walked right into the water. The shock of how cold it was almost stopped him in his tracks, but he wanted to get under water as soon as he could and so he kept going.

Rin watched him curiously along his route. Shuffling around so her body followed him, "Yup. Just didn't want to go alone~" She stood and followed after. She wasn't sure about that tone in his voice but she was hopeful whatever caused it would be washed away into the ocean once they entered it. But as she waded out, she did get a bit uneasy about waist deep. What if he was right? What if she couldn't do this anymore? She waded up to her elbow. God. It was just so ******** cold, too. She was starting to feel a little ill at the whole thing.

Melvin continued, glancing back only once to see her moving into the water. Once he was deep enough, he went through the water till it was neck deep, and he dipped into the water to get used to the water. When he popped back in, he brushed his wet bangs out of his face and looked over.
She didn't seem to be getting in too deep, but he didn't say anything about it. He just wondered if he should stick around to keep her from drowning or if he could go in deeper. He slowly swam back, testing to see if she's follow. "It is cold. Though the island would have warmer water."

"Yeah, it's like. Pure ocean. A lot of it doesn't see much sun," she answered. Slooowly but surely attempting to follow him further and further until she too had water up to her chin but was still touching the bottom with her tippy toes. She looked worried. But still... tried.
"So c-c-cold," she repeated as she bounced up and down on her toes a bit.

He watched, bouncing with her chin just above the water. "You don't have to go this far. You can just hang out in the water and do a few test laps." She looked either like she was worried about catching a cold or drowning. To him, both were very realistic possibilities, which was why he was a bit irked he couldn't go farther. The last thing he wanted to do was go out far enough that when she did go under and struggle to get to air, he'd be too far off.
Still, he didn't move closer.
