In response, Paris gave Chris another look.
He couldn’t help it. This just wasn’t how he was used to operating at all, not when it came to things like money and where it was used or how it was spent. Such a laxity towards it was completely foreign to him. He didn’t understand how it could be such an unimportant thing to someone, unless they simply had so much it didn’t bear thinking about—and following that thought led to too many questions about Chris’s financial situation that Paris wasn’t sure he wanted to know the answer to at this point in time. It was bad enough that they already had completely different ways of dealing with it. Just the thought that there could be more to it that he didn’t know about made his stomach turn uncomfortably.
Paris certainly had a decent idea of what he was getting himself into—and had been for almost two years now—but there was still some separation between the idea and reality. Sometimes he liked to keep it that way.
“I never said it was a crime,” he mumbled, his expression dropping into something a little less severe and he stepped closer to momentarily nestle into Chris’s side. “I just… I’m sorry. I’m not trying to criticize you. Thank you,” he added.
He wasn’t sure if this was really something he should be thanking Chris for considering they’d come to the decision together. Did one usually thank their significant other when it came to something like a promise ring? He wasn’t aware of any “thank you”s being exchanged in the midst of engagements, but since this wasn’t like that… actually, he wasn’t all that keen about going down that line of thought either, because when he took the time to consider it he figured a promise ring was just one step away from an engagement, no matter how they decided to explain it to themselves or to anyone who might express interest, and that was definitely not something he was prepared for.
So he turned his mind elsewhere and focused instead on the fact that he hadn’t even managed to get a gift for his mother yet, when this entire outing was supposed to have been for that exact purpose.
“Ugh, we got completely side-tracked,” he complained, even if he wasn’t too terribly upset by it. “Can we stop to get something to eat before we even try to think of something for my mom? I’m starving.”

Chris let out a small sigh, but placed his arm around Paris's waist when he moved against him. As difficult as his boyfriend could be sometimes, he would much rather see him happy. And if that meant getting frustrated looks and muttered comments, then he was willing to live with that.
"It's fine," he insisted, willing to drop his own frustrations for Paris's sake. "Thank you for accepting it..." He knew it wasn't something Paris had expected. Hell, it wasn't something he had expected! How the hell was he supposed to know that he was going to be going out and buying a ring today? A "promise" ring, but still... it was a ring. Even he had to take a while to get used to that idea.
But now wasn't the time to be worrying about it. He'd decided what he wanted, and Paris had agreed... They'd both made their promises, even though it had already gone unsaid, and for now that was good enough.
He laughed lightly when Paris brought up needing to eat, giving him a teasing poke in his side. "You're so high maintenance," he grinned down at him, but nodded in agreement.
Of all the things going on in Chris's life, of all the things that had gone wrong between him and Paris... he could at least say he knew what he wanted, and that was to continue their relationship and whatever came with it.
