The feel of her nose against his flanks made him smile. He would've been more than happy to let her sleep the day away with him curled around her had they not had other things to do. After she had risen, he too stood, stretching cramped limbs. He hadn't moves the entire night for fear he'd wake her, but it was a price well worth paying to have her snug and safe against him.

Varian stepped out from the cave's mouth, the grass and trees studded with drops of rain. When he had enough room, he stretched his wings -- a full fifteen feet from tip to tip -- before pulling them back to his flanks with a snap. He glanced over his shoulder and sidestepped gracefully as Avari followed him out, the sun sparkling where its rays hit her opalescent horn. He flicked an elongated ear, shaking his head at her query, bells ringing softly in the dawn. "No, sweetling. The journey we make is perhaps a mile from here to there, but I want to skirt the edges of the city so that you do not become anxious, even though the humans within will not hurt you. They might comment only on your stunning beauty, for it is impossible for anyone not to notice."

He smiled down at her and nudged her behind her ear. "It will perhaps take us two or three hours until we reach our destination. I do not yet plan to meet the boy King, so I shall stay with you for several days yet, though I must fulfill my Duty and watch over the Greater Herd. But I will be only ten minutes away as the crow flies if you have need of my, little Sparrow. Now come; the day grows brighter." With a flick of his tail, Varian started forward at a leisurely trot, going slow so the smaller mare could keep up without having to strain herself.

Following him towards the entrance, Avari had to pause her eyes staring at his wings in wonder as they were stretched out to full length. She couldn't help but admire the bright colors the night sky had washed out. Never had she seen an Azrein that looked like him, he seemed to gleam under the morning sun, challenging it's allure. Smiling she stepped out when the entrance was clear, and giving a soft nod of her hear at his words a soft laugh chiming along with his bells in the breeze. If they crossed a human she doubted the would give her a second glance with him walking beside her. Not just because she could hide behind his great frame, but because his presence almost demanded attention with it's vibrant and appealing colors. She was different, with her scarred coat she hardly demanded attention of any human, she would probably be seen as damaged goods to be shot down and scavenged for her horn and coat. Feeling a shiver run through her at the thought she turned her thoughts elsewhere, instead focusing on his words.

Ear twitching at his touch she smiled pleased to hear she would have his company and attention for a few days time at the very least. Following his pace she found her trot beside him her eyes wandering the area around them that was so foreign to her. "Are humans normally up at this hour? Where I grew up they normally traversed the land at night." Avari questioned casually as her ears twitched listening to the sound of the critters of the forest began their mornings around them. She kept herself ever present of the environment though she also felt the need to start a conversation so that the time may pass easier for them both.

Wondering back to his words, she turned her gave to him out of the corner of her eye and quickly added on another question before he could have the chance to answer her previous. "And if you don't mind answering, what is it that you have to do in the isle?" The mare wondered curiously her tail swaying in time with each step. "Well, I mean other then settling the war.."

Varian tilted his head to the side, looking down at the delicate mare trotting along beside him. He thought about her questions before answering -- a tactic he assumed that most stallions here lacked. "To your first question, no. Most humans live and work and are awake in the daytime. Some of them hold jobs at night to feed their families, or do clandestine work for the King, but about ninety percent of them are diurnal." A small frown marred his features. "Men like you ran across . . . they are the bad ones, and so work at night to attempt to remain unseen. They are predators." The God's voice grew hard, cold, like the heart of a glacier. "They and humans like them should not be allowed to prey on the innocent, nor to even walk these lands. My Bonded and I will wipe them from the Isle at the first chance we see."

The stallion's nostrils flared as he calmed himself, ruffling his wings. "So in answer, no. The honest and good humans are awake in the day time, Avari. And I know it's difficult to understand, but they will not hurt you." He smiled down at her, bumping her companionably with a wing. "And if they so much as look at you askance, I'll waggle my antlers and mantle my wings at them." He laughed, then, at the mental image of himself; a deep, rich sound, like honey on the tongue. "They'll run for the hills, thinking they've gone mad." He let out a derisive snort, chuckling to himself. It felt . . . good to laugh. To lose that solemn mask he so often -- and would forever -- don.

"As far as my Duties go, I have an obligation and responsibility to protect the Greater Herd, and the humans who are Bonded to them. Any human that an Azrein Chooses is of pure of mind, heart, soul, and intention. Bad humans have never -- and will never -- be picked for a Calling. So I must needs protect them as well, for if one of them die, so too does their Bonded." The Azrein's voice grew sad, his eyes haunted. A Chosen could live without their Azrein, broken, yes, shattered, definitely. But an Azrein could not -- physically could not -- continue on without their Chosen. "Aside from that, I must patrol the skies and look down upon the land, to ensure that no harm -- from those the Six have Turned or from any bad humans -- befalls anyone around the big city, Avandere, and the Greater Herd Plains." He let out a sigh. There was so much to, and so little assistance. He wondered how his father had ever managed it.

"But come, tell me more about yourself. How long have you and that stallion Eckar known one another?" There was no jealousy in his voice -- as a God, it simply was not in him. Protectiveness, yes. Anger, most definitely. But there was no room for jealousy in a God's heart.

Avari took everything he said to mind about the humans of this area, well humans in general it seems. To know they're up and about during the day both bothered and pleased her. She wouldn't have to worry about anyone sneaking up in the cover of shadows, as the sun had her way brightening the land around her. But she now knew she had to keep her eyes ever watchful for the stray two-leg wandering about doing these jobs they hold that he'd mentioned. At least for now she had the second pair of eyes watching out for them, though he did not fear them like she, Avari was ever thankful he took her feeling into account. Smile appearing with his bump, she gently laughed her mind picturing the image along with him and laugh sounding after his own. Though she had to admit to herself that if this stallion were to come at her, antlers pointed she find herself in quite a hurry to move out of the way of their points.

Listening to his voice sound around the area, she turned her head a small bit to gaze at him with her eyes, her ears moving back with the new tone that filled his once merry voice. Sadness filled her, for even though she didn't understand much of bonding she could imagine the pain he must be going through torn from the one he was supposed to be with. Moving a step closer to nose at his shoulder softly in comfort she kept her pace next to him a moment longer before moving back to her prior spot. Avari couldn't imagine how so many thing could be placed on one Azrein's shoulders, even a gods. She had readied herself to ask another question, to keep him talking through their journey when he surprised her with one of his own.

Heart quickening as he questioned her and Eckar, her smile faltered and her eyed returned to the path before her as she thought over how best to answer. "We haven't know each other long.. But he helped me when there was no hope, if it wasn't for his quick thinking I wouldn't be here to walk here beside you Varian." Nodding her head lightly she peered at him out of the corner of an eye before returning them to the path. "I would most likely be chained to a nobles garden, ever stared at from a distance but never approached. Left to rot amongst the pretty flowers until you're no longer able to stand and discarded." Avari quoted softly sadness filling her eyes. "At least that's what my mother would tell my sisters and I. I've never seen it first hand." Ears laid tight against her head as she pictured the betrayal in her sisters eyes as she was dragged away to the auction house while they'd made their escape. She could only imagine Dal was still out there standing and waiting for the day to come when she was no longer pretty enough to grace the gardens and put down. Feeling a shiver run down her spine she cleared her throat and set her mind back on track trying to ignore the thoughts that tried to break through. "So I own a lot to that stallion. We've been separated a lot since we settled down in the forests. Where I was raised, males and females didn't travel together. The Wanderlust must have struck him."

Varian nodded to her words, though at least on the Isle, he had never heard of Nobles chaining up Azrein. A frown creased his brow. In fact, doing anything that could harm an Azrein intentionally was a literal death sentence -- the King had absolutely no tolerance for that sort of thing. "You know, Avari. I don't mean to discount your mother's words, but the King does not permit that to happen on the Isle. It carries an actual death sentence to intentionally hurt an Azrein." He tilted his head to the side, antlers jingling. "In fact, I know for certain that no nobles -- at least in Avandere -- would do such a thing. The young King carries out the death sentences himself. He believes that the man who imposes the sentence should carry out the deed."

Varian sighed; a low whuff of air. "But I will say this. If he and I ever find the men who ambushed your family and took you and the others captive, I will put them down myself, for they are worse than animals." His tone and eyes grew cold before softening once again. "But you need not fear. I will not let anyone harm you, my Sparrow." He turned his head to nuzzle behind her ear, catching a flash of movement out of the corner of his eye.

He snapped out a wing right in front of Avari, halting her in her tracks as he came to a stop. Not just a halt, but every muscle, ever tendon in his body had gone abruptly still. His voice became quiet, almost inaudible. "Avari. Do not move nor make a sound. Get low in the tall grasses, and for everything you hold dear, make not a noise." He saw her blue eyes widen in fear and he extended his neck, nuzzling her for a moment in assurance before she complied. He moved himself to stand over her -- large as he was, her horn didn't even reach his underside.

"Come out from hiding, Turned." The God nearly spat the final word, his voice dangerously calm. "Do not sneak like predators in the night."

A low, sweeping chuckle was carried on the wind as an Azrein rose from the tall, lush grasses, his green eyes wild, all the whites showing, his pupils pinpricks. "Well, well. Seems we have a pretty mare and a Valdien imposter here." The Turned's voice was . . . was just wrong. Twisted with madness, with lust. "Seems I could be moved up in the ranks of the Dark Herd if I were to bring in your wings, stallion. And her tail would make a nice activity on a cold desert night."

Varian felt Avari shaking beneath him, and he lowered a wing, shielding her so she would not see the insanity on the other Azrein's dark features. The Turned was a mottled black and violet, a perversion of colors as they swirled and danced in arcane patterns across his coat. The God's nostrils flared, inhaling his scent -- decay. Varian went tense. He had been working with Cursed humans. "Leave, now, and get out of these lands. I do not wish a fight, but I cannot allow you to continue. I will give you thirty heartbeats before I come to kill you."

There was no anger, no rage in the stallion's voice. Only a quiet, liquid calm that was more terrifying than if he had yelled. "And be assured that if you are not running back to the desert that I will fulfill my Duty and see that you are ended, Turned." The way he said it was not a threat; merely a matter-of-fact statement. That alone would cause most Azrein's blood to chill to ice in their very veins.

Hearing his words caused her to pause in her steps and stare up at him curiously before continuing on. How strange this was, glancing at the land around her she was left to wonder. Had they run so far they'd reached another land? For even in the shouts that had echoed from the auction house were laden with fear of where they would end up. She was sure her mother wasn't telling her silly stories with the way she spoke them, but that was long ago she couldn't be entirely sure. Feeling herself begin to doubt she was physically shaken with the power of his words but let s small smile show. She'd lost a family that day, and thoughts of revenge against them created a bud of joy in her heart.

Opening her mouth to speak she quickly shut it tight when she was blocked and quickly told to keep quiet. Lowering quietly to the grass, the mare lowered her head, ears down and tail close. Her heart began to hammer as she she heard the other speak her body beginning to shake with fear. An Azrein stood in their way, an Azrein of all creatures speaking of terrible things that made her lower her head to the grass in an attempt to hide at least a little more beneath Varian's large frame. She desperately wished to close her eyes, but to close them with danger so close was almost like handing her life over without any care. So she kept her eyes on the crazed horse, until she was blocked by a wing and forced to look up at Varian with fearful eyes.

The dark horse chucked, his wild eyes locked on the stallion, wild amusement glinting in them as a wicked grin crossed his face showing off two sets of sharpened teeth. The threats went unheeded as the crazed horse began to circle off to the stallions left side his voice mocking the other. "Kill me? A pretty boy like yourself? Looks like you'd never killed a thing in your life." Letting out another crazed laugh, he dropped his gaze to where he knew the mare was hiding beneath the wings. "Acting tough for the female? Come lets see how far you take it. I believe my 30 heartbeats are up." He accentuated the final word with a snap of his teeth before he rushed forward ready to attack with the only weapon he had, and hoping to get part of those precious wing in his mouth and set the stallion off balance.

Varian took a deep breath as the Turned's hindquarters tensed. He let it out in a slow, almost mournful sounding sigh. With no other warning, the God leaped forward, pushing off the ground with powerful, rippling hindquarters, and let out an angry trumpet -- not the sound of a stallion, but rather one of a Deity, a very God to walk the earth. Large wings were held tightly to his flanks, nearly crushing his own ribs. Trusting himself, the stallion closed his azure eyes, focusing his Will to a sharp, white-hot point of light on the end of each prong on his antlers. The bells hanging from them chimed violently, and immediately they fell silent, even though he was still rushing forward.

With a thunderous snap, he opened his wings to their full span, kicking dust and debris up in the Turned's eyes. The advancing Azrein squealed but kept barreling forward, hooves beating madly on the ground, trampling sweet-smelling grass underfoot. Oddly enough, where the God galloped, the lush stalks sprang back up immediately, untouched, as if it had simply moved out of his way. With a vicious snarl, Varian inclined his chin, lowering his antlers into the stallion's path. With a frantic bugle, the Turned tucked his hindquarters, skidding off to the left, leaving deep gouges in the ground. As he spun, the Turned lashed out with a dangerously-pointed hoof, drawing a deep slash on Varian's flank.

Yet the God did not falter. He was used to pain far greater, so much more agonizing. With a tilt of his head, the tines of his antlers pierced through the Turned's coat, scraping audibly across the bones of his ribs. The opposing stallion let out a wail of rage and pain. The white-hot lights on the tips of Varian's pronged head all at once exploded in a flash of lightning, still under the stallion's coat, and then the two broke free of one another. Varian fell into an easy trot, turning his wings vertical so he slowed his pace before rising into a half-rear, about-facing smartly. Blue eyes gleamed cold, with no trace of warmth within them, his face a wall of granite, expressionless.

The Turned went into a lower gait as well, turning around to face the God with a smirk on his face. And then it turned into a mask of pure, unadulterated agony. The lights from Varian's horns seemed to be burning the Turned from the inside out, setting his flesh, hit coat, the very marrow of his bones afire. The Turned let out a scream; a primal noise that didn't sound like it could possibly come from the throat of an animal, and he fell at once to his knees, going into convulsions. Varian slowly walked up to him, looking down upon him with a gaze as cold as gunmetal, and spoke in a low, quiet voice, its cadence and cant changing so that the stallion's tone was barely recognizable.

"Your life has been given unwillingly to the God of Duty and Sacrifice. My Duty has been fulfilled, and your soul will be given a chance, a choice of where your spirit will remain until the end of days. Look now into my eyes, and see the one who has passed Judgement on your soul." Varian's entire body relaxed as he initiated a Soulgaze, while the Turned became rigid. After several moments passed, the God's mouth was set in a grim, hard line, and the Azrein lay whimpering on the ground, fire still hungrily licking at his fast-eroding form. "You are Tainted, poisoned by your base desires, and you have been denied entry into the Spirit World. I Call you to fulfill your Duty, and your soul shall be Sacrificed, along with your flesh, to the Gods of Below. Judgement has been passed. May you never find succor in the Afterlife."

With nothing else, Varian lowered his head and penetrated the Turned's throat with his antlers, the bells hanging from them flashing a hot, searing white-gold, like the very light of the sun. Varian's eyes remained locked on the body, tears forming from the intense brightness, until nothing was left of the corpse besides an oval of bare, scorched earth. The stallion let out a shaking breath, blood sluicing down his flanks, and slowly returned to Avari, his eyes shadowed with guilt, regret, and what might have been self-loathing.

"Rise, my Little Sparrow. You are safe, and the Turned has been given Justice. He shall not bother us again." Then the stallion promptly turned around, vomited, and grunted as the ground came up to meet him as he collapsed, falling into sweet, blessed unconsciousness.

Once the fight began and Varian moved from his protective stance over her, Avari suddenly felt very exposed and an intense urge to run rang through her very being. Though she held fast, not only by the words Varian had spoken earlier telling her to lie still, but she was frozen her eyes watching the battle unfold in front of her with intense, body shaking fear and mild wonder. Never in her life has she been in the presence of two Azrein attacking one another, it always having been Azrein against human. To see them attack each other felt intensely wrong to her, but that was thinking without any thoughts on all the horrible things this horse must have done.

She had laid there, eyes never leaving the battle until the first blood was drawn, eyes widening in concern as red blood began to mar the gods side, she flinched her legs seizing with the need to bolt whether to his aid or away to safety was unknown to her, but her mind held her still. She would do no good drawing attention to herself from either Varian or this Turned Azrein. Her gaze had held strong until the scream of pain rang so horribly from the enemy horse. Ears snapped down to her skull to muffle the sound, and eyes closing to block out what was happening she tucked her nose under her knee and tried to block out the battle around her. In her day with Varian she had almost forgotten that he truly was a God, he'd acted so sweet she hadn't realized he was really capable of something like this no matter his words.

She didn't want to see this anymore, hearing it was enough to make her shiver. He'd looked so concentrated, so unaffected by the pain he was inflicting another and it was something she didn't want to remember. She'd rather keep her memories of him untainted by what this Azrein had caused of her dear god. Oh Earth mother, she desperately hoped he would be fine. Listening to his words, her heart twisted painfully as she imagined the fear that twisted being must be feeling, though she didn't and couldn't hold anything against Varian. He'd given the Azrein a chance to leave, to avoid any of the confrontation it had instigated. Seeing a flash of light behind her eyelids, the mare tried to tuck her head further under her knee. Only lifting her eyes when all went quiet and she heard the heavy hooves of her stallion approaching her. "Varian.. Your side." She eyed the wide wound, before catching his eyes, sadness filling her own for him as she rose to her hooves while he spoke. Avari moved to approach when he was suddenly ill on the ground and tumbled over. Hurrying the remaining steps between them with a worried shout of his name she nosed his cheek, her eyes searching his unconscious face, before that nasty wound. Thankful he'd falling away from it, she felt a panic to aid him whatever way he could. Horn alighting with a blue glow she lowered it carefully to his wound, willing the skin to knit together and regrow where missing and kill the lingering bacteria. "Earth mother please let him be okay." She whispered as she managed to stop the bleeding before her magic flittered out with a few blue sparks and she was left her breaths coming heavy as she nosed his cheek and neck nickering softly. "Varian.. Please wake up darling. You'll be okay, I know it.." Folding her legs beside him, the unicorn rested her head-on his shoulder as she waited, hoping he's be fine.

Warmth. Warmth and a radiant, pulsing glow amidst the blue of the background it sat against. The blue-white light wasn't cold, like that of the stars, but was warm, so incredibly, inconceivably warm, like the light of the full moon during summer. It was delicate, almost frail-looking, but at its center there was a knot of hardened resolve, of strength that did not flicker nor dim. It held steady while the rest of the being glowed brightly, a center in a mass filled with compassion, with care. Yet on the outside, limning the radiance with a faint, purplish glow was a tinge of fear. It wasn't thin, nor was it thick, but it completely outlined the radiance, blocking some of that solid, core strength from within. And then that bright center suffused the outer layer of warmth, penetrating over half of that fear, and the radiance only glowed all the brighter. After several moments, the purple haze once more grew to its previous size, though it seemed . . . less opaque, somehow more transparent. And through the entire thing, that center remained solid, unwavering, granting him warmth and compassion so strong that it brought tears to his eyes.

And then he opened them. With a groan, Varian abruptly threw up his mental walls, cutting off his Sight as a tear leaked down his cheek. He looked up at Avari, and even though he could not See it, that warmth, that strength within her was right before his azure eyes. He offered the mare a weak smile and nodded to her, getting his legs beneath him before rising unsteadily. Taking a deep, calming breath, the stallion then shook himself all over like a dog -- or a wolf, perhaps -- and allowed his fur and wings to settle, golden bells chiming merrily. His side twinged and he arced his neck, looking back at what he expected to be a three-foot long and two-inch deep gash, bearing bone, but instead saw only a shimmering, almost glowing stain of blood going from ribs to flanks before covering the lower half of his hindquarters.

He blinked before turning to Avari, suddenly snapping his wings out and drawing her fiercely to him in a protective, strong embrace, powerful neck covering her own and pulling her head to his chest. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse. "Avari, my Sparrow, I'm so, so sorry that you had to see that. I didn't want you hurt -- I was so afraid that he'd -- that he--" The God cut himself off, nostrils flaring as he snorted. He once more took a calming breath, sorting his thoughts and banishing his fear. "I apologize, Little Sparrow. I did not want you see that, nor did I want any harm to befall you."

Varian clenched his teeth, feeling the tainted blood on his antlers, feeling sick at what he had been forced to do. But he had to be strong for his Avari, for his sweet, delicate, warm Sparrow. If he could turn back time, he would do the exact same thing a hundred thousand times, knowing that because of his actions, she would be safe. He let out a breath -- thankful it didn't shake -- and reluctantly released the beautiful mare.

"I did not want you to see that side of me." His words had lost the intensity of the Call, instead sounding only weary, tired, and ashamed. "You did not need to see nor hear any of that."

Worry had filled her the moment she had waited for his bright eyes to open, that when they finally revealed themselves to her once more she let out a deep sigh of relief, her own eyes flitting over his face and side for any discomfort. "Ah.. careful.." She fretted, when he began to rise off the ground as she slowly following his lead, watching for any sign he may go down again. Though when he held his ground, sturdy on his hooves and inspected her work she waited, wanting to ask him so many questions, but not overload him so fast after awakening. Moving to step near him, she jumped when his wing shot out wrapping around her side and guiding her close to his body.

Tears gathering in her eyes, she quickly closed them and gently nuzzled against the long hair of his neck, ears still pinned back displaying the distress she had been in moments before. Feeling the rumble of his voice cut the silence between them she sighed. "Don't apologize Varian.. Please don't." She spoke as he released her form and she stepped back a step, lifting her head to gaze up at his troubled face, her eyes avoiding the gore on his once shining antlers. "You did nothing wrong.. Please don't trouble yourself, he would have killed us Varian. If you hadn't.." Pausing she shook her head closing her eyes tightly to block the tears before stepping forward to press her cheek onto the side of his neck her heart racing.

She could hardly imagine what would have happened to them had Varian remained passive against the Turned. "You gave him a chance to leave.. What I saw or heard will be forgotten in time. You made sure that time remained." Lifting her head to nose his cheek affectionately, Avari let out a heavy sigh turning her gave to look about the area. "Lets find somewhere for you to wash your side off.. I healed it as best I could, it will probably feel tense as it heals completely on the inside. Please be careful." Voicing her concern, the mare began to draw in the air around them for any scent of water nearby in the unfamiliar area.

Varian let out a gentle breath into her mane, ruffling the feathers in her hair as she pressed her cheek against his neck. He was relieved that she didn't fall to pieces -- but she was strong. However, he couldn't shake the feeling of sickness within him, to have taken another life, even if there had been no choice. His eyes fluttered closed for a moment before he steeled himself and nodded to her words. "You're right, Avari. I just . . . I cannot stand doing that." If an Azrein could be green, he would've looked like a shrubbery. He dipped his head in acknowledgement to her statement of finding water, and he too smelled the air, looking off towards their right. He bumped her shoulder gently with his nose, careful to not let any blood from his antlers mar her pristine coat, and started off for the small brook he smelled.

He couldn't help but look back over his shoulder at the oval of scorched earth, knowing that nothing would ever grow there again. He walked forward slowly, lost in his thoughts, but he took comfort from Avari's presence beside him. He chanced a glance down at her and saw her pretty features set in an expression of resolve -- and he couldn't help himself: he laughed. "You're so strong, my little Sparrow. So deceiving to the eye, but you've such strength within your breast." The adrenaline wore off, and the stallion's wings started shaking; not from fear for his life, but for hers. He cleared his throat as they neared the water.

He gratefully waded into the cool liquid, feeling not only the water swirling around his knees, but also of all the lives that lived within, giving him strength. He was on this Isle to protect these things; Avari, all of the small life that no one but he could sense, all of the little critters and animals. The Greater Herd and the King, his Subjects and even the Neutral aligned Azrein . . . and yes, even those in the Dark Herd, if their hearts and souls were salvageable. Finding new resolve, the God knew that he had done what he had needed to be done, and he had not enjoyed it. That was enough for him.

He turned his gaze to Avari -- his sweet, beautiful, strong Avari, and dipped his head into the water, giving it a good shake to dislodge the blood and gore from his antlers. When he was absolutely positive that no residue remained -- even anything unseen -- Varian whipped his head from the shallow depth of the stream, flinging sparkling, clear droplets of water onto Avari. He let out a laugh; warm, rich, and then proceeded to trot over to her in the water, lifting his legs high in a prance, and he circled her, a sincere, honest smile on his face.

He then embraced her, with wings and head, and held her close to him, murmuring softly into her ear. "Avari, my Sparrow. You are beautiful, perfect, amazing, and the best thing that has ever been born on this floating rock."

Walking in time with him, she was lost in her thoughts, each one swirling around the many what if's that situation could have left them off at. She had almost lost someone she had just gained. Trying to sort her mind out, she was shocked back to the present when he suddenly laughed, tipping her head in question of what was so funny she smiled at his words. "I fear you're mind must have been jolted by your fall. I am not strong, I would have sooner run if you hadn't been there attacking. It shames me to say, if you had been a random stranger I was traversing with I would have bolted before it had started." Letting out a soft laugh, she stopped at the edge of the water as he waded into it's stream. Folding to lay in the grass on the bank, Avari watched him for a moment before adding. "I can only act strong because I have a stallion like you to back he up." In truth she had been terrified for him, the thought that had kept her from leaving sight of the fight had been the thought of something horrible happening to him. If he had been seriously injured and she wasn't there to attempt to air him, she would have never forgave herself.

Yawning softly in the bright sun, she felt the strange urge to nap in the warmth of the bright sun, but a quick shake of her head sorted that thought out. Watching as he started to clear his horns, the mare lifted from the grass waited for him to finish so they may continue on their path when he suddenly raised his head in a wide arch sending water droplets straight in her direction soaking her bangs and chest. Shaking the loose water from her coat she glared at him in mock anger before joining in with his laughter, turning in a small circle to follow him as he moved around her merrily, before he walked in to surround her with his wings and head once more. Arching her head down, she rested her forehead against his neck and let out a quiet and content sigh. Her ear twitching lightly as his breath hit it, the sweet words making her body warm with joy, she'd never been spoken too like this, it left her speechless.

Lifting her head to gaze up at him happily she nuzzled his cheek affectionately, before stepping forward and arching her neck around the side of his in a hug her tail swaying happily behind her. "You flatter me greatly dear Varian. How I was ever lucky enough to meet you baffles me. But I am forever thankful of you."

Varian released the little mare, albeit reluctantly, and took a few paces back from her, azure eyes searching her gaze. "Avari, my sweet Sparrow . . . You do not give yourself enough credit. You are strong, and the fact that you didn't bolt and that you trusted me enough, believed in me enough not to run proves that. If you had shown any sign of bolting, that Turned would have run you down." Varian tipped his chin, huffing softly into her mane, ruffling the twin feathers behind her ear. "And then when I had collapsed, you did not panic -- yes, you were afraid, but you overcame your fear and helped me. Most Azrein would have gone for help or would've panicked."

Varian smiled down at her, eyes shining, proudly arched neck bent to meet her gaze. "And yet you didn't. Through the whole thing you were afraid, but you remained calm and kept your wits about you. That's far more than most would have done in face of such a serious threat." He paused for a moment, tasting his words on his tongue before speaking softly. "I'm proud of you, sweetling." He nudged her affectionately with his broad nose before returning to the banks of the stream, ducking his head to take another long, cool drink before setting out once again.

"Drink, and as soon as you've had your fill, we shall continue on."

Her heart soared happily at his praise, she'd never had someone believe in her so much conviction and sincerity. It almost made her want to look at herself in a different light, to see herself as someone other then the mare who was ever surrounded by fear. It made he want to shine as the sweet and kind Azrein he claimed he saw in her. "What kind of Unicorn would I be if I'd have let you there to bleed out in a moment of panic." The mare noted, a smile of her lips as she laughed her eyes glinting in the light of his affection as the caught his own. "Perhaps it was the thought of what might had happened while I was away that kept me rooted to my spot. Either way I'm glad I was there, I don't what i would have done if my fear had caused me to leave you on the ground by yourself." Gently nosing his cheek before he turned to return to the riverbank, an following the few steps beside him.

Leaning down for a drink herself, she felt a shiver as the cool water hit her stomach calming the frayed nerves that had hid just below the surface. Lifting her head after a moment she took a moment to look over his once injured side, her nose reaching out to gently touch the line of still healing skin, inspecting the pink skin for a moment now that her mind was clear. Avari wanted to make sure she'd done a proper job in her rush, she wanted no sign of the attack to remain. Pulling away with a smile she bounced softly on her front hooves for a moment before tossing her bangs from her eyes, tail twisting contently behind her.

"I'm ready as soon as you are."

Varian turned his head, watching her as she inspected the wound she had treated. He was lucky she had been there, honestly. He didn't know if he would've made it to help in time . . . healing was not one of his specialties, even if he was a God. When she pronounced herself ready, Varian nodded and started off at a leisurely trot, leading the way, once more heading east, into the sun. Judging by its position, it was perhaps about mid-morning; they had come fairly far. Maybe an hour or a bit less to go. Giving her a grin, the stallion picked up into a slow canter, so she could keep up, wings extended to feel the wind beneath his feathers again.

Soon, she would be safe.

The two arrived at the promised woods around high noon, the forest alive with vibrant life and a multitude -- a symphony -- of sounds. Azure eyes took in the area about them, not worried yet always wary of danger. He turned his head to look at Avari who walked daintily beside him, her cloven hooves -- like his own -- hardly making a sound in the detritus on the ground. The laughter of a small brook could be heard somewhere ahead of them, and the great stallion halted his pace, turning to his right.

"Ah! Here it is, my Sparrow." Varian lowered his head, nosing a wall of branches, and beneath the pine boughs, a large, circular area was held within, looking almost exactly like a round home, sheltered on all sides and cool even with the rising heat of the day. "We shall be safe here, my love, and even when I'm not by your side, you shall be hidden from view. I will make a small Working, so that those who pass by -- if any -- will simply lost interest in this part of the woods, so that you may be left in peace."

He extended a wing, brushing her cheek with its tip, and he smiled warmly at her expression. Good. He had made her happy. That thought alone made his heart feel as if it would swell and burst from his very chest. The stallion let out a contented sigh. If only he could stay here with her forever.
