Cesc gave out a strangled groan as the weight of Xiu's body collided with his, his eyes widening as he noticed -- too late! -- the weight of the fourth swinging pendulum. The two Raevans collided on the ground and skidded, adding another long scrape to Cesc's already scratched arm. The stag's eyes opened just in time to see the weighted pendulum smack into the white sigel's stone wing, the sound reverberating through the air, the shock digging through Xiu's body and onto the stag's. The grimace of pain on Xiu's face stunned the stag: he had caused the other to be hurt by his own stupid lack of awareness.
"Xiu!" The pendulum swung the other way and Cesc wrangled himself and the other out of its path, between the 4th and 5th pendulum. His eyes were wide, worried, unsure of how to tend to the sigel."I am so sorry -- I did not -- I should have been more -- are you alright?!" Guilt was written plainly across his expression.
Behind Cesc, there was a break in the hedges, impossible to see from their previous vantage point -- another choice for the two Raevans. They could continue through the swinging axes (were the rest of them cardboard?) or they could take this early exit to some other portion of the maze. Cesc, with his back toward it, did not yet realize it, so preoccupied with Xiu's well being.

The impact of the pendulum against his wing must have stunned him momentarily for Xiu could not remember being dragged to the small space between the swinging pendulums. And Cesc was peering at him worriedly while apologizing all the while.
Xiu shook his head. It was not Cesc’s fault. Anyone could have made that mistake. Especially since the earlier three had been nothing but cardboard and paint. Xiu gave a low but silent growl, his temper getting the better of him. He was sore, wet and smelling faintly of bird poop and the maze had still dared to pull a trick like this onto the both of them. Someone could have gotten seriously hurt. A bone may have been fractured, for example.
Xiu sat up and took a brief glance at his left wing. Apart from the feeling that it might simply drop off at any moment, there was no external damage to be seen. Xiu gave his wing an experimental flap and winced as his muscles protested against the weight of his wings. Okay...his left wing was probably sprained. Best not to trouble it any more than he had to.
Giving Cesc a reassuring pat, Xiu glanced behind the stag and noticed the alternative exit that had opened up to them. Points at them Xiu gave the frei a wary look. Should we chance it? His gaze seemed to say.

Cesc's expression of guilt relaxed with Xiu's reassurance, although a faint look of concern still lingered behind his eyes. Inwardly, he chastised himself -- he would have to be more vigilant, more careful inside this maze. Somehow he felt that he should have known better: after all, nothing in here was what it seemed like, and so he should take nothing at face value. His jaw set as he looked behind him to that fresh exit the maze had provided. Xiu seemed wary, but Cesc was more suspicious now of the axes. What if one seemed cardboard but wasn't?
"... maybe we should take it," he said, looking down the pathway. It was short, and split again into a T, giving them a double choice. He squared his shoulders and nodded at Xiu. "If we see a dead end, at least we know we have another path here."
His expression became wry. "... if 'here' stays here."

With the maze shifting as often as it did, Xiu doubted that whichever path that they had left would be left open for them to return to should the alternative fail. But there was no point in thinking about that. What the two of them should do now was to find a way out of this infuriating maze. Already the Sigel was thinking of a few choice words to say to the Doctor. Most of them involved “explain” and “dangerous” and “insane”.
Floating off the ground, Xiu nodded towards the pathway. Let’s go and get this over and done with sighed the Sigel as he took the path on his right. Apart from the smattering of coloured flowers along its walls, this path looked similar to most of the other paths that they had taken.

Cesc's good-natured expression had become somewhat grim as they first turned one way -- but then, seeing a tall, blank, wall closing in that pathway, they quickly and silently turned toward the other. Unable to keep a dark expression long, though, the somberness soon evaporated from the stag's face as he tried to summon the positives of the current experience. At least nothing was happening now, and they were getting drier? Already he felt lighter, and he was no longer dripping, even if his clothes were grass-stained and his arms were scraped and scratched... maybe the axes were the last of their troubles?
He let the silence continue for now. It was necessary for both their moods to heal, at least a bit.

Now that they had hit another blank wall, Xiu was more than happy to give Cesc the lead. The Frei seemed grim and determined to find his way out of the maze and Xiu was in one thought with him on this. The sooner they find the exit the better. The maze had ceased to be amusing around the second encounter or so and had gotten downright dangerous by the third and fourth encounter. Xiu wondered if something might have gone out of hand...
The path that the both of them had backtracked into seemed to be rather long and lonely and narrow. But after the dangerous wide open ones, this had got to be safer at least.

The two floated down the narrowing pathway in silence, but it was only a few more minutes before Cesc's good humor returned to him. More positives lit in his mind: there was nothing to feel upset about here, was there? Certainly things had been inconvenient, even dangerous -- but they had both come out alright from them, and had perhaps even... learned something? Perhaps something about how to handle oneself in an emergency? It seemed far-fetched, but Cesc was certain that the doctor had sent them in with some design other than just putting them in harm's way. And, if he thought about it, the maze had also been kind to them: supplying a bench after the horror of the storm, and opening a pathway between the axes when they had fallen.
The stag's amber eyes slid toward Xiu, wondering how he could raise the sigel's mood. What could he ask that would not be too strenuous a reply for the mute Raevan?
"How is your notebook drying?" he asked genially, inclining his head gently toward the other. This part of the maze was quiet and lovely, temperate and restful. If the whole maze had been this way, how different things would have gone for the two!
But, as the pathway continued, long and ever-narrowing, the hedges seeming to creep closer with each moment. Perhaps it was just a feeling -- the soft blooms that dotted the hedges made them seem busier, nearer, the petals reaching from the uniform level where the leaves remained. And it was so unchanging! There had been no turns that Cesc noticed in their walk, no separate pathways branching out... what was this place? It seemed more a hallway than a path.

Xiu gave Cesc a small glance and took his notebook out. The pages were still a little damp and might tear if he tried to write in them. Shaking his head Xiu kept the notebook once more. The path that the duo had floated into seemed to be stretching much further than what the Sigel thought was logically possible for the Garden Maze’s size. Floating beside Cesc, Xiu could not help but reach out to the soft blooms and marvelled at them.
This seemed almost peaceful compared to the varying situations that they were in earlier. Tucking the bloom away for pressing later, Xiu floated along the gentle stag. Given the hedge scene before them, Xiu would not have been surprised to hear harp music in the distance; such was the ambience of the place,

In the foliage on your right there's a rustling noise. As this is a maze where anything (and we mean anything) can happen, this doesn't immediately sound promising. However, what breaks through the leafy wall is something short of amazing. A horse-like creature - silvery white in color - with cloven hooves, a long tail, and an even longer silver, spiraling horn steps out in front of your path. The creature doesn't seem to immediately notice your presence and instead lowers its head to graze.

This part of the maze was so relaxing, so beautiful and calming, that Cesc could not help but feel his mood rising. True, it did not seem to make sense -- they had been going straight for so long, it did not seem to be possible. It must be a trick of some sort, a subtle arc that seemed straight but wasn't? But that was hardly a present thought in Cesc's mind. The scent of the flowers was heavenly ... he could smell jasmine, orange blossom, honeysuckle. It both refreshed and calmed him, the same way he felt every morning when he fed on the beautiful dawn. His shoulders relaxed. Tension slipped away.
He turned to Xiu with a companionate smile, preserving the silence so that they could both enjoy the beauty of this part of the maze to its fullest. He knew now that Xiu's notebook was in no shape for conversation, anyway, so it was better to delight in this meditative garden instead.
Then, from his left side, a hedge rustled! A creature leapt out, and Cesc's heart jumped with it -- a new trial for them to overcome! He tensed, halting quickly, his shoulders up and his eyes sharp, ready. He was still, his peripheral vision keeping Xiu in his sights, his hands balled into fists. His wings twitched and became intangible light once more, the feathers glowing. Whatever the maze had to throw at them this time, he felt prepared to face it!
... but what was this? A beautiful creature, unaware of them, making its way through the maze in its own pace. A gorgeous flank, silvery white, unblemished in any way. Gentle eyes and white eyelashes. It seemed carved from wind and marble, this animal of grace and poise and purity. It was like the drawings of the stag that Vivi had shown him -- like it, but even better, more regal. It dipped its head and the tension whooshed from Cesc as fast as it had come; he stood still, his jaw slowly unhinging, his eyes filled with awe. He could not escape the feeling he was in the presence of royalty.
A unicorn.
He could barely tear his eyes away for long enough to exchange glances with Xiu, his eyes speaking for him: Have you ever seen such beauty?

The scenic path continued on for some time and despite this oddity, both Cesc and Xiu seemed to feel a sort of peaceful, healing calm about the place. The way the sun shone through the mist, the occasional soft whispering of the wind; it was indeed a most magical sensation of the secretive kind.
Just as the two of them were about to reach the end of the long maze, a sudden rustling in the hedge made not only Cesc but Xiu wary as well. Given the nature of their previous trials, the both of them were reluctant to be caught unawares. Already Cesc’s wings had taken on that oddly golden sheen Xiu had seen earlier during the storm and this made the Sigel curious. Just what exactly was Cesc’s soul and essence? From the antler stubs, Xiu would have hazarded a deer-like creature of some kind.
But all those thoughts were driven away from the Sigel when the creature appeared. No, not creature... “Creature” was too foul a word for it
Xiu shook his head as if trying to clear his mind. Were his eyes playing tricks on him? Surely that could not be...a unicorn....
But Cesc’s look said it all. It is a unicorn and that unicorn is currently grazing not five metres away from them. The graceful being seemed unaware of their presence as of yet and for their part, the two raevans were holding their breaths in awe of the majestic being before them.
It’s...beautiful Xiu murmured, his eyes never once leaving the creature . But how did it get here? Was this...an illusion of some kind?

There’s a rustling in the leaves as a hedge in between the unicorn and the Raevans visibly shook. The beautiful creature turned around to stare in shock, finally noticing the Raevans not very far as well. There was an eerie quietness and a pause, before the rustling seemed to... move! Towards the unicorn!
The unicorn reared up and neighed in shock when vines suddenly appeared from within the hedge walls and wrapped themselves around the unicorn's body, dragging it to the ground. The more it struggled the more they seem to want to curl around tighter and restrict the unicorn's movements, as if they have a mind of their own. When it seemed like running in the opposite direction seemed to be a plausible idea, the hedge walls shook around the Raevan and the path closed behind them, only leaving them one way to go - forward. Whatever shall you do to save the beautiful creature?

Had he not said -- had he not promised himself to be more diligent, to trust the maze less, to be on his proverbial toes until he and Xiu were safely out? It was the beauty of the unicorn that had dulled him for that moment, the incomprehensible, regal loveliness of the thing that made him ignore that rustling... and ignore it again until mere rustling turned to this. Vines snapping up from the ground, encircling the unicorn as if trying to drag it to some other part of the maze through the ground itself! It neighed and reared and then was taken down, its side thudding against the hard ground.
"No!" Cesc yelled, his eyes wide with shock and sudden anger, diving forward to the unicorn as quickly as he could. The creature was thrashing and more vines were appearing. Cesc snapped one from the air as he put his arm between the unicorn's neck and a thick vine -- he would lose his arm before he would let the unicorn be strangled.
The stag hissed out a curse as the vines fell upon him, crawling up that arm and into his sleeve, trying to yank him down as well. Working one-armed, his movement restricted, he pulled at the cord, his deft fingers untangling it and tossing it aside. His wings were glowing brighter than ever, transparent and intangible as they became wholly light, as though preparing, charging, for something. His body was taut and tense as another vine crawled over his shoulder, the plant scratching against his jaw. He ripped it before it slithered around his throat, his fluted golden collar tearing with the force. There was no time to untangle now -- Cesc began to tear the vines, his brain sputtering.
The unicorn itself was kicking at the vines, hooves beating back what it could, its tail thrashing. Cesc kept working, pulling more of the vegetation off of it, severing what he could.

Xiu watched the whole scene in a horrified and yet somehow detached kind of manner; the way the hedges had rustled, the way the slender unicorn lifted its graceful head and whinnied in fear as the sudden explosion of vines wrapped itself around the lithe creature. The way Cesc had selflessly rushed over to save the being only to be tangled in a mass of suffocating vines; his glowing wings flapping frantically with desperation and anger.
The white Sigel had watched it all with a dreamlike amazement. Just when they had thought that the dangerous part of the maze was over...
But what Cesc had selflessly done and the manner in which the vines had aimed for the unicorn...
Something clicked within the Sigel’s mind. The common factor of the two was...motion. The two beings had inadvertently struggled and caused a ruckus; something of which the plant had obviously responded to with horrifying vigour. The plants were thigmonastic; that is, they responded to touch and motion as stimuli. Xiu cringed as yet other vine wrapped itself around Cesc’s body and another tore at his clothes. It might have been his imagination but Xiu was partially sure that he saw a thick vine caressing Cesc’s lips through the tangle as though daring the frei to cry out again. Xiu had never heard of plants responding to sound but...who knows?
Floating warily towards the struggling mass of raevan and unicorn, Xiu kept his motion to a minimum. It was all good that the Sigel was floating silently along the path as well. Perhaps if he could slip pass this barrier and find the plant’s main body or root... He would have to act quickly though as yet another vine joined the fray with the sound of more clothes being torn following soon after.

Perhaps Xiu had the correct instincts, movements and sound created only served to attract more vines to the stag and the unicorn. By now, there were so many vines wrapped around the unicorn's lower body that it couldn't kick it's hind legs anymore.
Just as they thought it couldn't get any worse, the floor where the unicorn was suddenly sank in with a dull thud. The vines ceased to move at this instant as the unicorn's hind suddenly started to... disappear into the ground? Oh dear, it's a quicksand pit! The Raevans better move fast if they want to save the unicorn. Although they were a menace just a moment ago, perhaps the vines could be used in some way?
