Brains, not brawn, cleared this challenge. You are free from the vines entangling grasp and free to proceed along the path deeper into the maze.

His chest rose and fell at an alarming rate. The frei was practically hyperventilating, but his eyes were locked on Axel's form once she got to her feet. Cruz swallowed hard when she spoke, holding his shoulders. He was beginning to sweat with panic, bound so tightly he could barely move anymore save for his rapid breathing which was attracting more vines towards his chest and, dangerously, his rune. Her words were only barely registering, mostly when she urged him to calm. The rest of her explanation was lost to his frantic mind that had all but regressed to pure animalistic urgency.

"Ten, breathe," his brows scrunched up and his jaw tightened, looking into Axel's blue eyes with pleading urgency. "Nine." His breathing was the same, quick and short, but he gulped and tried to concentrate on her voice and the touch of her hands on his skin which was so tender compared to the rough grip of the vines. "Eight, breathe," Cruz growled (though it came out more like a whine) but attempted to keep his mouth shut and regulate his breathing through his nose. "Seven." His claws dug helplessly into the leaves, clutching small branches of the hedge. More were digging painfully into his back the tighter the vines pulled. "Six, breathe," his breaths became deeper but still quick and labored. The vine around Cruz's neck loosened, as well as on his forehead, and he scrunched his eyes shut tight. "Axel," he pleaded clumsily under his breath, keeping as still as possible. Her counting was keeping him centered, each number pulling him further down into a state of calm, but his rune was still glowing and pulsing as if it were crying out. "Two, breathe." Almost there. He could feel the vines recede but he dared not move, not yet.

"One."

Wasting no time, Axel grabbed his forearms and pulled. The frei followed easily, feeling no heavier than a medium sized dog with his third-of-a-body. He kept his eyes clenched shut, felt the wind rush against his face and body as she ran to safety. Only when they were truly out of the vine's reach did she stop and release him, and he hovered slowly to the ground like a discarded plastic bag. She giggled and rolled, overjoyed of their survival, but the frei was still shaken. Not bothering to float, he used his hands to crawl towards Axel and wrap his arms around her, burying his face against her side once she was done celebrating.

"...I want to leave now," Cruz mumbled, muffled by her shirt.

The giggles turned into a hiccup and then finally died down as Axel took deep breaths, they were safe now. Axel glanced at Cruz as he pulled himself towards her, she too wrapped her arms around him and breathed in deeply. “Me too.” She said quietly, eyes closing briefly. “We’re going to have to get up soon if we want to leave.” She didn’t want to sound pessimistic so she left out the part that there were probably other uglies and bumps in the paths in this maze, but they weren’t alone and that’s what counted. Feeling Cruz relax against her, Axel opened her eyes up again to stare at the sky above them. “Alright, let’s get going.” Gently, she removed Cruz arms from her so she could get up, and then grabbed onto his arms to help him float back up.

“Ready?” Axel’s hand found his and she moved forward into the path again, once more they were faced with a terrifying t-junction. Glancing both ways, she made a face left always leaded to a dead end, and they could really use a break. “How about we try left one more time?”

Hearing her voice again, calm, allowed him to relax and he opened his eyes to see the the bright green of the surrounding maze blurred together with the fabric of Axel's shirt. Cruz nodded slowly and pulled back as she got to her feet, thankful that she reached out for him again afterwards. He gave his wings a small flap and he was back to hovering in the air though he had lost some height; where before he rested at roughly the same height as Axel, he now reached her shoulder. Still, he held her hand and was thankful for the contact. Her suggestion was a welcome one. Even if it was a dead end again, it would give them more time to recover. "Yes..."

This part of the maze seems darker than most, but it’s a peaceful dark accompanied by the soft glow of several colorful crystals scattered about in excess. A setting like this could be rather romantic for couples.

When Axel noticed that the lighting was darker, her mind immediately began to worry. She was sure there was something lurking in the dark, after all the other parts of the maze had proved deadly and she was not about to trust it. She probably would have thought of the whole setting as very peaceful if Axel hadn’t been on her guard, so she narrowed her eyes and advanced in. As they advanced though, she could see the end. Her mouth dropped open, she was relieved to be getting out of the damn maze. She was going to find Anita first once she got out of her, hand her Cruz and hope he was okay after the while vines things. Then it was to the bathroom to see what she looked like, no doubt like she’d been through a storm.

To reward herself for getting through this ordeal, she was going to grab a large plate of sweets and just stuff her face. Yup, stuff her face until her stomach was about to burst. She was going to be able to just relax after that, probably see who else had come out of the maze and who was still inside. She felt sorry for those who had started after her, unless they’d ran the whole way through and hadn’t gotten caught by the troll or vines. “Hey look we're almost out!” Axel pushed through and out of the maze she was not wasting any more time in there, if she wasn’t so worried about what people might think, she’d get down and kiss the ground before her.

Though things were now quiet and seemed safe, Cruz's guard was firmly up. He was sullen, shaken from the vines, and with all of his frenzied struggling, he had worked himself into an overheated mess. The downside to having cold, reptilian blood aside from an aversion to low temperatures was the opposite side of the coin -- and aversion to high ones.

He hang back behind Axel, floating slowly and lower to the ground than usual. Everything about his posture read exhaustion; Cruz was slouched, his arms dangling limply while his neck was craned down and he stared at the ground, his wings drooped and his eyes were half lidded. More over, his mouth was left hanging open and his breathing was deep but quicker than usual. It wasn't loud to any degree, so his companion not taking notice was no big surprise. Within his protective ribbon, Cruz's rune glowed dimly. The energy he gained from the minotaur's kiss was almost used up during their encounter with the nasty vines and he felt ready for a nap.

Distracted as he was, he didn't notice the subtle change in lighting until they were enveloped in the darkness and glowing gems. He paused, dipping slowly lower like a balloon losing its helium, and took in the sights. It was beautiful, each crystal giving off a different color of light, all of them dim enough in the dark so that they didn't glare and hurt their eyes but bright enough to illuminate their way. A certain star's flushed face brushed through his mind when his eyes landed on a red gem and Cruz's chest tightened with desire to bring it to this place or find one similar enough without the perils they just faced.

Axel's relieved cry before she pushed through an opening and he took a moment to breathe a sigh of relief, a tired smile washing across his face. There would be nothing more strange or dangerous to face, he would be back out and return to Anita's comforting arms. Would she even believe him when he described what the maze held? At least Axel would be there to back him up. Blearily, the crocodile floated himself out after the wedding planner and sought to nestle himself down somewhere shady to rest before continuing with the party.
