Perhaps it was a little too quiet, because the broom did not move. Other First Years appeared to be having some trouble with their brooms as well, so Jeri did not feel terrible. He simply tried again. "Up," he said, speaking a little more loudly and clearly this time. Again it did nothing.

It took a couple more tries, but eventually the young man managed to get the broom handle to rise off the ground high enough for him to grab it, but he didn't manage to do so fast or hard enough. It swatted him in the face. Something of a red welt had appeared across the middle of his pale face, but if he noticed, he hardly cared. Jeri was not the type to care much for appearances, as anyone who took note of his ivory blonde afro might guess.

It hadn't been the boy's preference of hairstyle, but it hadn't bothered him enough to have it changed, either. As far as he was concerned, anyone could think whatever they wanted of it and him. The Hufflepuff wasn't going to bother trying to correct anyone who came to the wrong conclusions about him. If they wanted to know the truth about him rather than speculate, they could ask him themselves. In the meantime, he was content to quietly observe the progress and interactions of the other students.

Alois sucked in a breath, feeling eyes on him and hearing the teacher's worried voice made him feel embarrassed. He quickly sat up, rubbed the back of his head and turned to look up at the teacher. He quickly said, "'m alright right, Professor. L-let me try one more time." Though he was terrified, he was sure if he apologized to the broom it would surely be nicer to him.
He bit his lip as he stood up from the ground. The pain between his legs was still very much there, but he pretended as if it were only a pinch. He smiled slightly, walked to the broom and gently held out his hand. With a small voice, he said,
"I-I'm sorry, er, broom. P-please up?" He held his face away from the broom, still awaiting the thing to smash into him. No pain had come and he felt the broom rise into his hands.
"T-thank you," He whispered to the broom.

Liam approached the field with little to no care about how this "flying" lesson would go. He was perfectly fine to have both his feet on the ground where he was in control. Flying really didn't appeal to him all that much, but the stories his father had often told him about the joys of flying had inspired him to at least see what all the fuss was about.

Liam listened carefully to Professor Drake's instructions and grew a bit more wary of flying. They were going to fly on flimsy old brooms? What were these people thinking? Oh yeah, let's make the first years learn how to fly on crappy old brooms even though they might not have the best balance just yet.

Liam crossed his arms over his chest and watched as everyone else began to file over to the brooms laid out on the ground. Biting his bottom lip and fidgeting a bit uncomfortable he decided to watch and see how the others did before he approached a broom. He winced when the poor Ravenclaw boy got attacked by his broom.

And the kid was still going to continue! Man, now that kid definitely had guts.
Seeing that the hurt kid had done rather well the second time around, Liam decided he might as well try his hand at it. With a deep sigh, he walked over to the only broom that was unattended. "All right, let's do this broom," Liam spoke to it. "Can you come UP?"
PostPosted: Mon Jul 23, 2012 1:48 pm

Liam watched with slight amusement as the broom rolled around on the floor but made no move to come up to him. "Well..I guess flying just isn't for me." he replied with a bit of relief.

He glanced around to see if anyone had noticed his utter lack of skill with the broom.

"hmm..maybe I should have been more polite about it. Please come UP?" He asked.

The broom just rolled around some more and came to a stop against his hiking boot.

Liam shrugged and moved away from the broom. "Now what?" He asked glancing around. It seemed as though everyone else had somehow gotten their brooms to work. He supposed if the broom wouldn't go up then he could probably get out of the rest of the class.

Maergrethe was excited when she had learned that today she'd actually get to fly around on a broom at school! Sure she had gotten to practice at home with her brothers, but she had always had to ride with one of her older siblings or her father. She was ready to ride solo! Or so she hoped.

She skipped as she followed the rest of the First years down onto the lawn where Professor Drake had the brooms set out ready for them. She took up a position next to her brother Liam who looked as though he really didn't want to be there. She felt like saying something to him, but the Professor started to speak and she attuned her attention completely on what was being said.

She was impatiently tapping her foot and twiddling her fingers as the Professor droned on and on. She glanced over at her brother again and saw him cross his arms across his chest. She was a bit surprised when Liam didn't immediately join the other kids at the brooms but figured when he was ready he'd come.

She skipped over to the broom, her hair bouncing with every step. She came to a stop next to a broom and held a hand over the broom and cried, "Up!"

Maergrethe shrieked when the broom suddenly came to life and hit her over the head with it's wooden end. "Hey! Stop it! Professor help!" She cried in annoyance.

What was going on? Why was it attacking her? Brooms weren't supposed to attack people! And it wasn't stopping! It was still hitting her over her back and shoulders now!

"Someone Stop it!" she cried covering her head with her arms and tried to get away from it as the broom continued to attack her rather viciously.

"Good job," Professor Drake complimented, proud that the poor Ravenclaw boy was willing to try again after being smacked around by his broom. I never knew that flying could go so wrong... She shook her head, unsure if she felt amused by this fact or not. Before she could decide, she heard some screaming and--trying not to sigh--Professor Drake turned around and saw another Ravenclaw being mauled. "Stay still!" The Professor barked, rushing over to the girl, her capes billowing. It didn't take much effort from that point to grab hold of the rogue broom. "Go to another one, Linwood," She advised, taking the uncooperative broom back with her to the front of the class.

"Has everyone got their brooms up?" She inquired, taking a quick glance around. "Linwood, don't be so lazy with it!" The Professor snapped, "You have to be firmer--and be more persistent, boy! You just rolled over to a broom" Honestly! Kids these days didn't have a speck of motivation.

Without waiting for Linwood to catch up, Professor Drake started the second part of her instructions. "The next thing we're going to do is just hover a few feet off the ground..." And that's probably going to go horribly--seeing how many maiming we had just trying to pick up the broom... "What you need to do is place the broom in between your legs and then push off the ground with both feet--" Professor Drake demonstrated, wedging her broom between her legs and then kicking off the ground just a few feet so she was hovering. "Feel free to tuck your feet near the broom's end but I do not want anyone higher than where I am now!" Professor Drake allowed her broom to rise up off the ground about three feet. "Got it, everyone?--Good. Now have a shot and BE CAREFUL."

Round Two:
- Your student is going to be placing the broom in between their legs and then kicking off the ground using both feet. They will then hover over where they were standing.
-They are not allowed to actually fly yet. (Remember to roll, by the way. The rolling rules still apply)

Maergrethe instantly went still and blushed brightly realizing everyone was staring at her. She was a bit annoyed that her brother Liam had just stood there and hadn't tried to stop the broom. She stuck out her tongue at him as she followed the professor's orders and found new broom.

She figured that the teacher would want her to try and get the broom to come up again, so decided to try that again. "Up!" She said standing as far away from the broom as she could and held her way out over the broom.

She was relieved when the broom easily came up to her hand. She beamed with triumph and slide the broom between her legs, adjusting her skirt so her underwear wouldn't show and pushed up with her feet.

Liam bristled slightly as Professor Drake reprimanded him. He wasn't lazy! It was the darn broom's fault! It was probably defective. He glared down at it and almost kicked the dratted thing. Somehow he held himself back.

With a scowl on his face he reached out with his hand once more and commanded in a terse tone, "UP!"

This time the broom jumped instantly int his hand. Liam was relieved. He didn't want to stand out here trying to get the dratted thing to come up for the next hour or so.

Sky glanced at Lothar when he chuckled--just in time to see his own broom rise up into the air. Before she could say anything further, Sky watched a series of disasters occur in front of her. Firstly, Lia was smacked in the face with a broom--a very cringe worthy accident--and then secondly, poor Alois was nearly killed by his broom. Sky just watched in disbelief--how did that even manage to happen!? She almost could understand Lia being hit, but that broom of Alois's went completely rogue! "That... is almost impressively clumsy." Sky couldn't stop herself from blurting out, her eyes still trailing after Alois.

A few minutes later, the professor resumed instruction--leaving Sky just confused. They just... pushed off their feet and huzzah? They were flying? "Are you kidding me?" Sky muttered--she knew that this stuff was magical... but it couldn't be that easy. No. Absolutely not. But what did she know? As soon as the professor finished talking, everyone was pushing off their broom and a few of them were actually in the air. "Well. Why not?" Sky thought out loud to herself, throwing her leg cautiously over her broom.

Alright... She breathed, holding the broom tightly. One... two... three! She jumped off the ground with both her feet. Watch, it'd just be her luck to drop back down again--just like how gravity SHOULD work.

They had to go that high? Already? He gulped but tried to mentally prepare himself for this. He was so hoping that things wouldn't go as they had the last time. Not to self: Never kick a broom! He thought, while trying to clear him mind.

Alois smiled weakly at the broom again and slowly pulled it so it was under his legs. It stayed still, continuing to act like a good broom and this sort of relieved his worry a little. With a deep breath, he quickly pushed up off the ground with his legs and hoped for the best. Only three feet, only three feet, only three feet!

Anya blushed a bright red when the boy turned and addressed her squeak. She nodded softly and moved closer to talk " Yea, but apparently brooms can be quite mean." She stopped talking to listen to the teacher.

" We just push off?" With a sigh she gently threw her right leg over the broom. She looked over at Lysander, Good luck!" With that she pushed off the ground.

Liam was still stung by the professor's remark so he wasn't about to wait to be the last one to push up off the ground. He swung a leg over the broom, straddled it and maneuvered his feet to the back end where they could reach the ground.

"Well this had better work." He muttered with a frown and then pushed off with his feet as hard as he could.
