Illarion was unsteady on his feet though his heart soared when Coda surged away from Morsmordre. He wanted to tell her it was over, to tell her to be gone--but the words fumbled on his lips and his vision swam even more. What was the matter with him?
Coda's words came to him like from the end of a long tunnel. The words echoed and rebounded. He took a deep breath, pushing his legs down harder to the ground to stand taller. He sneered at the enemy, his word difficult and slow.
"Go. Now. Or. I . Will. Kill. You."

Was this it now? Had she and Illarion prevailed over this fight with Morsmordre? Coda gave her head a gentle shake as she tried to take in what appeared to be the retreat of the other mare. No, it didn't seem as it was over. Her gaze swept back and forth between Illarion and Morsmordre. She felt compelled to stick close to her mate now that the battle seemed all but decided.
Coda was about to make another remark to Morsmordre when she heard Illarion's words. Something about the way he was speaking sounded off and Coda cast a quick peek behind her. Illarion was still standing but it seemed as if he was ready to topple over at any second. Her gaze was furious as she turned back towards Morsmordre. "What did you do to him? Answer me!!" Anger had flooded her voice as she spoke. Somehow it didn't seem as if Illarion had come off as well as it had appeared that he had. Her heart leaped into her throat at the thought that she could lose Illarion. It would not happen. She couldn't allow it. Her front leg that had born Mors's earlier attack stomped the ground hard and she flinched from the impact before bearing down on Morsmordre. "Tell me what you did!"

Morsmordre laughed as her blood slaked the ground. "Let him taste the bitterness of it dear. It's your cross to bear." She backed up a few inches, then took of into the forest, her feet flying behind her. Her leg ached, but she needed to put a few hundred yards behind her before she tended herself.
Maybe, he would die and she could get Coda later. Perhaps, she should stick close.

Illarion felt himself grow heavier as Morsmordre drifted away. "Coda," he called to her. "Coda..." his voice a whisper as he fell to the ground in a heap.

It was her cross to bear? Those words circled repeatedly in her mind as she watched the other mare flee from the vicinity. She wasn't sure what her next actions would be until she heard the faint words from Illarion. The loud thumping noise as his body slumped to the earth was disconcerting. Coda glanced once more in the direction that the other mare had taken before letting her attention focus on her mate.
Illarion needed help. It was as plain to see that something had transpired during his battle with the half-kalona mare. The only wounds that Coda could see that were visible were the bite marks that Illarion had received. Was that the problem then ... he was poisoned? Coda gave a soft sigh before nudging at Illarion's side with her nose. She was concerned enough that she didn't want to leave her mate's side. Logic dictated that Illarion needed a healer, a unicorn to attend to his injuries but what would happen if she left him? She wasn't at her full strength anymore and she could not bear it if she left only to come back to find a corpse. Coda bowed her head over Illarion so that her mane brushed against the stallion's neck. "I vow that I'll protect you now Illarion. I swear to it. Just rest and let me do the rest." ~~~ That had been a few days ago. Coda had managed to rest herself and go and locate a unicorn to see to Illarion. At first it didn't seem as though the healing had had any effect on her mate but slowly his injuries began to mend. It seemed as if time was the greatest worker of all. She kept near to Illarion's side as he recuperated. She wasn't going to chance another encounter with someone like Morsmordre if she could help it. She'd learned a lesson that night and once Illarion was healthy enough ... she wanted him to teach her how she could defend herself.
