"Th-thanks," He panted as he climbed back into the seat, but even if the insect numbers were thinning, they were not yet vanquished. He had only a moment to catch his breath before they were leaping at them once again with fluttering, glowing beetle wings.
With growing frustration, the trainee's weapon was raised once more, "JUST. GO. AWAY. STUPID. BUGS. I'M. TRYING. TO. CATCH. MY. BREATH."

When the buzzing in his head had faded a bit, Jerry glanced around. Only two left. Just two. out of the whole swarm, only two.
Don't get cocky yet, bro, they might be the two that actually eat us. Just aim-
It was harder now, before they were all pressed together, it was difficult NOT to hit but now with his arms and spirit exhausted it was hard to target.
He concentrated on one, waiting until it came into his line of fire... closer... wait.. wait... NOW!

The buggy swerved around once more to face the final remaining bug. Jerry's head was swimming, his cannon shaking as he landed it to rest on the windshield. One left. They could do this. The Buggy's engine roared, wheels spun in sand, the insect gave a clicking snarl, charging forward, leaping to land on top of them- Roar was angled up. The explosion resonated through the sandy hills. Jerry collapsed back against the seat, covered in dimming glowing goo and panting heavily. "Is... is that... is that all they got? Ahahahahah..." Damage: 11 -9 = 2 Remaining critters: ALL DED/99

Simon was silent as he drove the back up to the portal. Slowly the sounds of the desert night filled the air, and the ruckus of the battle faded into a memory. Just another day in the life.
When the dune buggy stopped, Simon stepped out and straightened his tie, deft fingers fluttering restlessly against silk. "Your performance was acceptable, Mr Collins," he didn't sound enthusiastic about this turn of events, but not upset either. More like a man who had resigned himself to the existence of a continued burden. "You may pick up your new coat from the quartermaster."

"I suppose this one is pretty stained..." Jerry laughed weakly, glancing down at the ruddy stains still visible even in the dim light coming from the runes on the dune buggy. He was still not quite sure what the evening had been all about. A bit of extermination? A test of gumption? With all the glowing creatures and high-speed battling, he had almost forgotten the pitch-blackness of the night.
He paused to stare up at the stars a few moments as he digested the division assist's words. Acceptable. Acceptable, he had said his performance was acceptable! "Ah- thank you, sir!" As he carefully eased himself out of the dunebuggy, he shifted Roar from his lap to his shoulder to salute politely, "If there's anything I can do right I think it's blowing things up, Sir, ahahahaha."
Apparently the concept of promotion was far from his mind. The stars, though, were beautiful. He didn't often just stand out in the night gazing up at them. It was oddly uplifting.
