"When you gave me your pin, dumbass," she said quickly, not wanting to daunt on the subject for long. It would just bring up another argument and she knew that story too well with him.
She reached over his shoulders and pulled him into a noogie. "You broke your promise! I think it's time for a punishment!!" she said laughing. Oh she had hell to give and more.

"Not my hair!!" he complained, trying to squirm free from her hold. "I just fixed that!" Well, it felt like he'd just fixed it--he'd fixed it recently enough that he didn't want to do it again! "And I left a phone message!"

She stopped abruptly, thinking it over for a moment. He had done that. The contents of the message had basically said he was gone and that he would be back for prom.
His promise was that he'd never leave again though.
Danny stared at him with eyes squinted, pausing dramatically. "NOPE DOESN'T COUNT." She proceeded to noogie him once more.

She was in denial.

"Danny, I woulda remembered a ridiculous promise like that," Roch told her. "I didn't promise never to leave. I probably promised never to leave without telling you. There's a difference. Seriously Danny, do you really think I'm gonna stay in one place that long?"

Danny rolled her eyes, flopping down so she had her head on Roch's lap. "No, I guess not." At least she was growing. As a snot she would've insisted they'd always be together. Roch had tamed her, even just a little.
"Hey, you said you were going to prom. Who with?" she asked. Maybe ....

"Awww lame. I don't know her." Well, it was better than the entire fiasco with Claire and Moure last year. She definitely didn't want Roch to go through that again.
It was bound to come up though. "How come you didn't ask Amphi?"

He jerked. A tiny flush of red crept up the back of his neck. "Cuz... I didn't want to," he said finally. "I really, really don't wanna," he added. "Last year's prom was an utter fiasco, I figure this one will be, too. Easiest way to deal with it is to go with someone I'll probably never see again and avoid the drama."

The flush didn't go unnoticed, which was surprising. Danny normally didn't notice anything.
She stared at him, and then said, "You like her, don't you." Statement, not question Roch.

"I don't WANT to!" he said. "I seriously don't want to like--like her," he told her. "I'm tryin' to get over it, too, I can do it. I did it with Xiu, I can do it with Amphi. I just... need some time to figure out how," he muttered, falling back on his bed. "I'll get over it," he swore.

Danny smiled. Roch was so predictable. "Y'know it's not a bad thing to like her." She laughed as they became a little L shape on the bed.
"And hey- don't keep comparing Amphi to Xiu. Amphi's ... not Xiu."

"There's some similarities. Mostly the fact that they're good ghouls that have never even dreamed of breakin' the law, and from good families, I bet, whereas I'm a punk from the wrong side of Halloween. Nah, best for everyone if I learn to deal with this jackin' problem of mine. Good ghouls are WAY too much trouble for me."
Wait, wasn't it supposed to be the other way around? Hell if he knew.

Unless that somewhere was an artic mountain ski resort thing and ALKDFJAKSJDF DANNY HATED EDEL.
She was still complacent about Amphi though. "Just give yourself a chance, 'kay?" Not Amphi. He could easily give Amphi a chance. It was a matter of getting over the poor, bad boil boil attitude that mattered.
