Are we still working with one person writing out the entire fight between their own character and another's? I'm trying to wrap my head around how that would work in combination with this battle system. Would the one person be deciding both characters attacks and the benefit they get from each stat?

For instance, Vay could be maxed out in every state but if I don't write as if he does, then it won't mean anything. I could say he got distracted for a moment and forgot that he has ultimate KO move A, whereas I was fortunate enough to find some odd kink in his armour. I'm the writer for the entire fight, so I'd get complete control over everyone's actions.

I could just be missing some key idea though. Could someone clarify?

That is highly agreeable.

Do we want these fights to take place in one location like a stadium, maybe one that can be easily rearranged like the Colosseum; perhaps teleported around by godly might. Or more like we lay out a random battlefield for each match and then use magical viewing mechanisms to watch from afar, the two combatants alone in the field.

Whilst typing this I came to the opinion that the early fights should take place on a standard battlefield, mostly barren, easily the typical Colosseum gladiator battle. Then for the later fights we switch to more exotic locals, but we'll have to be careful to put pairs of characters in environments that don't bias the match.

The stats exist to give people an idea of what each character is capable of. For example:

Sockdrawer has maxed his Strength with min in Intelligence.
Sassy has balanced both scores.

The two are pitted against each other. They should both write Sockdrawer to be strong as a bear but dumb as a sack of hammers. Sassy should be balanced, not able to punch as hard but able to out think Sockdrawer in both player's writing.

Which ever player writes both characters best, staying with the scores and listed abilities as well as making it interesting, will win the fight.

And it was already said the event would be in a Romanesque Colosseum thing.

Watervoir, I had that confusion as well and only had it solved just recently.

The key is that winning isn't the point, you will always win the fights you write because that's how it works, but if you with through cheese, underhanded writing, poor writing, or unreasonable luck, none of the judges are going to rank your fight highly and you will lose. If however you write the fight well and present your opponent in a fair light, making them behave as their profile specifies, then you will rank higher. So if you go up against someone who just wants to cheese it up, and you write fair, your entry will win because it's better written.

People could go around doing as you say, but it's pointless as with the current system by my understanding, only the winner's entry is deemed to have actually occurred. (within the reality of the game anyways). They write your character as a dimwitted slab of meat fighting the fantastic fanciful financier of Hell, they loose, what they wrote didn't happen.

If however you go up against somebody who's playing it the fun way, the victor will be judged on the merits of the writing, not (necessarily) the events that take place.

And a fight between two cans of cheese wiz will receive a right proper smiting.

Okay, so for judges, do you want us to use the well known roman gods/goddesses? Or would you prefer to have some lesser known ones or even make up some god/goddess characters?

I think that the judges should have the ability to choose which rounds will have magic or not. I agree with Lily in having some more exotic locations (or heck, just taking the exotic location and somehow keeping it within the coliseum with godly powers) once we get past the initial rounds.

I'm having a little more fun with the idea of having the judges set up the stage or changing small things here and there between the fights. Just to make things interesting...Hehehehe... xd

Hey, in the Colosseum itself, they had all manner of mechanisms for creating alternate landscapes. I'd be in total favor of godly powers changing it around - for instance, saying things like, "This round, you must write that halfway through, a pair of dire lions is released into the ring."

This thing gets cooler and cooler.

I like the idea of either doing all roman or all different. Like maybe one roman, one aztec, one chinese or whatever pantheon the player likes.

And Sibe's right. The roman Colosseum was awesomely versatile. They could even fill the thing with water. And having gods in the Emperor's box means there's not real limit to the sort of obstacles we can put in.

I do like the lions.

It's almost like we're planning a tri-wizard tournament, only so much better. :D

I'm a little more partial to the different gods/goddesses. I wouldn't mind doing all roman, but I think having different gods/goddesses might make it a bit more interesting.

As far as filling the Colosseum with water, I knew that it once had "sea" fights in there. I'm wondering if we could incorporate that in. Have a fight on a boat in the middle of a storm. > biggrin

So are we doing an ancient Greece/Rome time period, or is it going to be a modern do-over of an ancient sporting event? So I can get a sense of what time period my staff character should be from.

It's going to be a sort of mixed fantasy thing. . . possibly held in a world similar to Aelzwyr or the Academy (if not actually in one of them) where people from all different worlds can end up.

So. . . yeah. Not going to limit anything.

In fact the Academy students will be encouraged to attend this event as part of the audience.

Put staff and judge templates on first post. I'm working on a fighter template but need help. Here's what I have so far:

For Fighters
Character Name:
How often can you check/post to the event?
Looks:
Personality:
Brief bio/introduction: (what would be said when introducing you to the ring)
Describe your fighting style:
Describe your weapons:
Stats are on a scale of 0-20. < 5 being dysfunctional and 20 being incredibly adept with the average between 10 and 13. You have 75 points to put into the following stats:

    Strength:
    Dexterity:
    Constitution:
    Intelligence:
    Wisdom:
    Charisma:

Skills are on a scale of 0-5. 0 being completely inexperienced and 5 being mastery. You have x points to put into the following skills:

    Melee weapon: (specify weapon)
    Ranged weapon: (specify weapon)
    Light shields:
    Heavy shields:
    Disarming:
    Throwing:
    Grappling:
    Acrobatics:
    Blocking:
    Dodging:
    Elemental magic: (specify element)
    Summoning magic: (specify summon)
    Illusion magic:
    Telekinesis:

I need more skills and some opinions about if this looks simple enough.

I'm thinking about 30 point for the skills. Six absolutely mastered (extreme specialization) or a more even spread.

Alternatively, to avoid the "Dexterity is for sniping from a unicycle while dodging fireballs" thing, we might go more Strands of FATE-ish and have a smaller range on stats with large boosts when they do things they're trained in and penalties when they do stuff they're bad at (i.e. John Thunder, Professional Wizard, has 3 Constitution. However, he's Burn Resistant from various spells gone awry - he has it counted as 5 to resist lightning or fire but only 1 against cutting, piercing, or smashing attacks). Thoughts?

Waaaay too complex. The stats are only basic guides to help people write a character they don't know. We need it to be super simple. Which is why I went with d20, because it is very simple and probably somewhat familiar to most (that play stat games).

A'ight, Mel and I chatted for a while about the system and all until this came out of it:

Character Name: Willam McFadden
How often can you check/post to the event? 1-3 times/day
Looks: Greasy, short, gaunt, unkempt teenager with mid-length black hair, circles under his eyes, and shifty fingers. He wears clothes that are too big for his body - especially a huge, old, thin-worn hoody - and looks like a street urchin. It seems like if you were to unbreak his nose, get the impudent sneer off his face, and get him to take a bath, he'd be decent-looking, if still pale and thin, but as it is, he's a decidedly unattractive person.
Personality: Willam doesn't talk a whole lot, and when he does, it's with the arrogant whine of a teenage pariah. He's decided that he's alone in the world, whether that's true or not, and doesn't like to accept help except to leech off others. He steals when he can, though he's more a pilferer than a pickpocket - he's cleverer than nimble, though he does know how to get from one place to another quickly. His pets are his friends, and only with them does he show any kind of honor or compassion.
Brief bio/introduction: "Willam McFadden hales from... well, that section's blank... ~ahem~ Willam McFadden, the wandering nomad pokémon trainer enters the ring today for a chance to win... money. He's not after fame or a name, ladies and gentlemen, just the money. Having abandoned his home after a nuclear apocalypse, he's just trying to stay alive! So... here he is! Willammmmmmmm McFadden!"
Describe your fighting style: pokémon trainer (summer) or thief/rogue if forced into physical combat
Describe your weapons: throwing knives and a single dagger, and pokéballs
Basic stats
Strength: 5
Dexterity: 12
Constitution: 11
Intelligence: 9
Wisdom: 20
Charisma: 18

Extended stats
((Point pool of 30))

Armed Combat
Melee weapon: 2 (dagger)
Ranged weapon: 2 (throwing knives)
Unarmed Combat
Disarming: 2
Escaping grapples: 3
Acrobatics: 1
Blocking: 1
Dodging: 4
Magic
Summoning magic: 15 (pokémon trainer)
Aipom (4): chimp-like creature with a hand on the end of its tail, specializing in speed and physical strength
Beedrill (5): gigantic wasp creature with low defenses, high speed, and high "magic" in the form of projectiles
Sentret (3): large weasel with high magical defenses, moderate speed and physical attack, and no magical offense
Voltorb (3): pokéball-shaped creature with mild eletrical capabilities, high speed, low physical and magical defense, and the capacity to self-destruct (effectively a frag grenade)

Plz discuss. I think this helps simplify the format - it throws back to... someone's earlier suggestion about specific skills. I suggest the 5-point cap be applied to each individual skill - 5 fire, 5 short sword, etc.
