If she hadn't been so busy freaking out about the bugs that were in her hair and her clothes, Kesin would have been angry about the complete lack of help she received from the others. Coming back here had turned out to be both a mistake and a waste of time, when she should have kept going to the stream.

Now approaching a panic - seriously, there were bugs all over her - she dashed back towards the water, shrieking all the way.

Kes sloshed into the stream, but at the point where she was, it wasn't anywhere near deep enough to help her.

Kesin rushed upstream, searching for deeper water, but found none, and the beetles persisted in harassing her. Why wouldn't they just leave her alone?! She yelled and flailed in wordless fury, trying to shake them out of her clothes and hair, but it wasn't any use. They were everywhere, and they just wouldn't stop.

Running up a stream, panic-stricken and in the dark, it wasn't long before Kesin slipped and fell, but the water was too shallow to supply any relief. The bugs kept swarming, and she couldn't do much but curse uselessly at the horrible insects. Desperate to do anything that might get them off of her, she yanked off her shirt so at least no more would get caught in it, and maybe she'd be free of the ones that already were.

Hus began backing away faster now as the swarm became more and more persistent. She was completely covered in the goo now and her leathers would only provide her so much protection at this point. That and the swarm was getting worse. Batting at the bugs and trying to keep her steadily building panic down Hus turned as Kesin ran past her screaming.

Apparently the girl had the right idea. "Hold on!" Hus barked turning to chase after the poor girl shaking herself as she attempted to shed her own attackers. In her blind bolt she nearly went skidding into the very hole the flits had been making to stuff, her boot loosening some dirt along the edge causing the girl to stumble and pull back. Turning she stared down at it in shock for a few seconds before the attacking bugs reminded her she didn't have time to panic. Picking up speed she ran from the hole as fast as she could aiming to chase after Kesin and employ her idea with the stream.

Hus bolted wildly after where she could barely hear Kesin's cries of help and splashing in the distance. Picking up speed she barreled past leaves and branches hoping that would deter her attackers. Then suddenly she was in the clearing of the stream over hang and pushing off from the ground leaped into the stream with a resounding splash sending water everywhere.

For a moment she struggled in that cold wet world between stream bottom and sky before she surfaced with a gasp. Spluttering and spitting out water she turned. "Hey! Hey over here!" She called to Kesin having found herself an area of water just deep enough to submerge her infernal attackers and keep them at bay.

Desperately Hus began to splash water at Kesin trying to both get her attention and get the biting insects off of the poor girl.

Hus struggled through the water trying to latch onto the flailing fearful girl and drag her over to the deeper spot she herself had found. "It's ok I got you!" Hus yelled to her pushing herself through the water, her leather weighing her down somewhat and slowing her usually more elegant swimming technique. Right now though wasn't the time to be worried about looks of all things.

Having managed for the most part to shed her attackers Hus lifted tried to grab Kesin's arm and pull her over to the deeper area splashing the girl the whole time with her free hand in an attempt to knock the beetles off the poor screaming wher candidate. "There's a deep spot over here! Just hold on. I'll get them off you." Hus assured her trying to keep her voice calm and steady.

Initially, Kesin didn't hear the other apprentice, too absorbed in her struggle against the bugs, and when Hus first grabbed her, she jerked in surprise and flailed at the other girl before realizing that someone was finally helping her. It was about sharding time somebody paid attention! What in all of Pern had taken her so long?

It was a question she was too busy sobbing and then sputtering to ask, though, and unintelligible noises aside, she said nothing while Hus helped rid her of the beetles.

Hus splashed the last of the beetles off the poor girl reaching out to untangle some of the dead drowned ones from the poor apprentices hair as best she could. "All right I think I got all of them." Hus said letting the current carry the dead shells and bodies of their attackers away. Reaching out she patted the spluttering and panicked girl on the shoulder doing her best to be comforting which wasn't something she was exactly great at.

"Don't know in what cold sharding between those things came from, but I think we're rid of them for now." She assured Kesin as best she could. "Maybe we should see about getting out of here before we both get chilled."

Hiccuping and snuffling, Kesin dog-paddled awkwardly to shore as soon as she was sure she was free of bugs. Even when she wasn't exhausted and coming off a panic, she wasn't the best of swimmers, but she at least made it out of the water. Huddled up on the bank and shivering, hugging her knees to her chest, she took a moment to catch her breath.

"What." Sniff. "Took you so long?" The look she gave Hus was not grateful, but borderline-accusatory.

Hus followed her up onto the shore flopping down beside her as she tried to swipe some of the water off herself. Her leathers were completely soaked through at this point adding on some extra pounds to the slim huntress. Stripping her shirt out she did the best to wring some of the water from it before pulling it back on moving to do the same with her pants. "I had a date with a swarm of beetles and you know it's just so rude to run out without so much as a parting good bye." Hus replied her voice clipped and sarcastic though she kept her tone from being sharper then it could have been.

Stripping her pants off she wrung them out as well before pulling the leather back on. It wasn't much better, but she at least felt like she wasn't hauling an extra couple of pounds on her. "Are you, physically at least all right? Did they bite you any? Or did you hit something trying to get into the water?" Hus asked with as she stood to scan the area around her searching for any suitable branches and timber to maybe use to make a new torch and possibly some fire so they could see.

Soaking wet in the cold of the night, Hus and Kesin had lost their tools in their mad panic to get away from the insects. In trying to help Kesin, Hus had let go of her knife and the stick that would have an excellent torch is now soaked and floating off downstream.... Kesin's water pack is discarded and sitting in the shallows, the bottom burst from her hurried removal, rendering it useless.

The swarm had moved on, harassing Silion instead... worked up into a frenzy, they exreted a horrible smelling substance that rubbed off on the young man. Putrid, cloying, and impossible to ignore, the swarm of smelly insects were doing their best to drive away the invaders.

As Hus and Kesin recovered, it became apparent they'd only just dodged the true attack of the bugs as the putrid smell rolled through the wood from the direction Silion had been. They smelled faintly of it but the water had done well to protect them from the furious beetles.

Above, a flit popped back into existence and chittered at them angrily, as if chastizing them for losing their cool with such a silly complication. They still had a job to do... and to emphasize that, the flit dropped a wad of dyed thread in the needles before them and disappeared back into the woods.

SPECIAL EVENT: Well done! You evaded the bugs but you've lost your supplies in the mad rush to do so! Find new supplies. Roll well and you find sufficient materials for a pitch torch and flint to strike a flame, roll poorly and you find nothing but sticks too moist to burn.

Silion: Roll 1d10 for evading the insects.

Hus cold, wet and now knifeless as well as without the branch she had planned to use as a torch cast about her for new equipment. Looking at the irate flit she shot the little creature a dirty look, but said nothing. No she was determined to turn this around as best she could.

The smell drifting through the forest though wasn't exactly a comforting reminder that the bugs were still out there and definitely not happy at all. But they had a test to complete as the little flit had made clear. Eyeing the clump of dyed thread of the ground she cast about for flint and tender, but found none as she scanned searched the area around them.

Shuffling through the leaves and along the bank Hus only found useless pebbles and not the flint she was looking for. Not to mention all the timer along the edge was wet, probably from her splashing into the water.

Cursing under her breath she tried to find another branch or something to start a fire with. She could already feel the chill of the night beginning to set into her bones and she tried to pick up her pace to warm up her muscles. She was a hunter she should be able to do this. Then again luck seemed hardly on the apprentice's side tonight of all nights.

The glint of something dark along the bank among the stones caught her eyes as Hus turned digging at it for a moment to pull loose a small chunk of flint. "Ah ha!" She called out her success with glee standing with her prize in hand. Now tender. She'd need a bit of tender.

Scouring a little closer to the woods, not wanting to get too far from Kesin lest they get separated she found an over turned log. It was rotting somewhat, but the decaying wood pulp inside was dry and fluffy and with a few sticks and twigs she had a nice fire bundle. It wouldn't make a large fire, but with luck it'd be enough for her to light a small torch.

Setting her firebundle and flint aside she scoured along the banks finally after a good many minutes managing to find a decent branch to light aflame. Setting that down by the bundle she pulled her belt from around her waste taking her metal belt buckle and began striking the flint along it aiming to cast the sparks into the bundle and set it alight.

The little buggers didn't like fire. That was an easy enough thing to observe but so much hardly to deal with when they were clambering all over him. He couldn't very well set himself on fire, well he could but that wouldn't end well. Continuing to swing at the creatures he began to make his way away from their nest. There had to be some way to get them off of him.
