Gwen's eyes widened at the mention of a pet store, and her grin could only be compared to that of the Grinch's. She expressed her thoughts aloud, and the way her eyes gazed slightly upward gave her the impression that she was almost imagining the prospect of it in her over imaginative mind. "Yeah, a pet store would be great! They don't allow us to have pets at the apartment Maddy and I live in, though I am able to keep Micah hidden well enough. Rats are easy to conceal, and they don't make much noise... well, except at night when he's either chewing on the bars or his log."

She continued to think of the possibilities of working in a pet store, to be completely surrounded by animals, as she munched down on her burger. Meanwhile, her phone vibrated in her pocket but she barely felt it and unknowingly allowed it to go to voicemail. "I could be around all the animals I want, thought I'd imagine it'd be hard to let them go when it comes to adoption, but then they'll be going off into good homes, so I shouldn't complain."

Before too long, she had finished her burger, and she tried to keep up a well-mannered front as she wiped away the leftovers from his chin and mouth, though it was ruined with how she licked her fingers a mere few seconds later. "I should come down to this place more often, once I get a job. Though, it'd mean I'll be coming by more often to pester you about boxing lessons... you -sure- you're okay with that?"

Jett had finished his last bite just a few seconds before Gwen; the burger had been good, but his appetite demanded less savoring and more swallowing. Upon Gwen’s last comment, he could only offer a short laugh and shake his head. “I can’t imagine I’d have a problem with it. Might be nice to have some company during my lunch break. Most of the other people in the area are old or boring, and it’s been ages since anyone came to visit. Which sucks, actually. You’d think during the summer everyone would have free time, but I guess they’re all busy vacationing or something.”

He shrugged, as if he didn’t really care, though the truth of the matter was that he found himself a tad annoyed by the concept. He could go out of his way to go visit his friends, but it absolutely was not worth his time if they couldn’t drop by once in a while. Even if his friends could be as annoying as ******** me all you want for boxing lessons, I never mind sharing a few moves. And, you should definitely try out for the job,” he concluded. “—If it interests you. Lots of little animals. Probably cute ones. I know they sell puppies. Not quite rats, but—I confess. I like dogs a little more than I like rodents. But, hush. Don’t tell Micah. That thing seems to hate me enough as is,” he said, leaning back to stretch. The table wasn’t exactly comfortable, but his back had been sore from hunching over too much today already.

On the topic of Micah, Gwen could not hide her frown, and she was not the type to keep her thoughts to herself, especially around people she trusted. "It's not like Micah to not like anyone, really. He's usually very friendly and curious... and he's not that old to where he's become an old cranky coot... I guess he's jealous?"

Not wanting to bring down the mood and figuring that Jett wouldn't be that interested in her pet rat, she decided to segway into another topic, one that she was rather curious about. They had some time to spare, right? "Can't blame him; he used to have all of my attention until you showed up. So, who is the lucky girl that's dating you? How many other girls did she have to fight through to get the number one spot?"

She was genuinely curious. She knew and accepted the fact that she didn't have a chance with Jett, but she was eager to meet his girlfriend someday. Perhaps she could give Gwen advice on how to pick up a guy? It was worth a try...

Jett had little reason to doubt that Micah was ‘not usually like that,’ but at the end of the day it didn’t matter much to him. Micah was still a rat, and he had no idea how you were supposed to treat one, even a domestic one. When the conversation drifted towards Raven, all he could do was shake his head and smirk.

There were so many ways to describe her, and no one way seemed right. Raven had certainly clawed her way to the top of female candidates, and while he’d decided that he wasn’t interested in dating, she hadn’t quite given him the option to say now.

And he kinda liked that.

“A few,” he answered, rather modest for a guy who thrived on being in the spotlight. He’d turned down his fair share of girls all throughout high school, and it wasn’t until after the Surrounding that he’d even considered picking up a girl.

“But I wouldn’t say it’s about the number of girls she beat out so much as how she beat them out. We just had an…interesting way of bonding.”

His watch told him they still had a few minutes, so he asked, “You seem like a pretty practical girl. What do you know about all those people disappearing a few months ago? The ones that that mysteriously came back? With whispers of magical adventures in space?”

Gwen's bright, golden eyes had widened at that last part, and if she was still eating or drinking, than she would have likely have choked herself to death. That question was rather harmless, but the fact that he had put the words "magical" and "space" in the same sentence completely threw her off. She racked her mind for some kind of response that wouldn't be too incriminating. No, she wasn't one of those students; she didn't even know about this event, but she did have a pretty big secret along those lines to hide.

So, she fell back on plain ol' ignorance, thankful to have moved into this city after this supposed event. "I didn't even hear about that... though, maybe that's why Maddy's always worrying about me running off at all hours of the day."

'And night, tee hee...'

"So, what happened? Do people really think they're aliens and space adventures going on here?" Gwen was darn proud of herself for wriggling her way out of that pickle, but she tried not to get too comfortable. Now she was more curious about that little story than she was about his girlfriend, or even Micah's dislike towards Jett.

It was easier to talk about the events on the Surrounding when the audience already believed the ridiculous story; he had never spoken to strangers or people not somehow involved with the incident just to preserve his dignity. He wasn’t quite sure if he should spill the beans to Gwen or just shrug off the story, so he decided to play with it a bit. “You know how there are all these rumors? Monsters running around, people in costumes trying to destroy the world? Have you ever run into any of them or do you figure they’re all just myths and bedtime stories told to keep kids running outside and getting themselves in trouble?”

A part of him liked to remember the Surrounding—liked to talk about it. It reminded him that it all had been real, and gave him a time to reflect on all that had happened since then.

It also had a bad habit of reminding him of how many times he—he—had almost been killed.

"Well, there's also thugs in the street, gangs, and not to mention a curfew that will land you in a lot of trouble with the police to worry about with roaming the streets at that time, so I think if one is willing to scoff at all of those dangers then they wouldn't be worried about monsters, or super soldiers," Gwen said, suddenly wishing there was more food to eat if only to hide behind the burger and not risk incriminating herself. Then again, what were the odds that this guy was a Senshi himself? There was always that possibility... and if he were and had felt comfortable enough to talk about it himself, then why couldn't she? Maybe... this was a test?

Or a challenge. Which was something Gwen, nor her Senshi counterpart, ever passed up. "Me, however... I might have come across something strange occasionally. At first I thought they were really ugly animals, but now that I think about it..."

She pretended to muse on the topic, tapping a finger to her chin and waiting to see what his stance on the matter might be. Jett was hard to read, but that could also just be Gwen's own inability to dig any deeper herself.

She didn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about the strange happenings, but she didn’t seem to outright refute the idea. “In Destiny City, you’re a lucky soul if you’ve never run into anything strange. I’ve run into my fair share. Strange monsters. People in outfits, calling themselves special titles. If you feel so inclined, ask around. I know a lot of people who have interacted with then. Seen them, met them. Been trapped by them—attacked by them. Go visit HITS, you’ll find a lot of them, there. People who will be willing to tell you their stories.”

He shrugged, as if it was of little importance to him. If Gwen wasn’t full heartedly believing his information, he wasn’t going to let her think he was some conspiracy theorist, or some attention-loving creep. “Ask about the Surrounding.” He looked at his watch, and though he had enough time to get back to work without worrying about late, he did not have time to go into everything he’d experienced while in space. “I’ve gotta get back to work soon or I'd tell you myself, but the point of bringing it up was to answer your question. My girlfriend, she just happened to be in the right place, at the right time.”

…Even if that place had been space. Specifically in the clutches of a giant salamander.

Gwen had her hands under the table, hiding how her fingers grabbed and pulled at her pants and hiding her nervousness well. She knew exactly what he was talking about with monsters- she had fought, and slain, a few herself, either alone or side by side with another Senshi. She was a senshi herself, but she was certain that she wasn't one of the ones at the Surrounding, or had disappeared. She was awakened as a Senshi after such an event, but she was absolutely certain that she had nothing to do with that event. It definitely interested her.

But she would simply have to wait another time to get the story of the Surrounding, as she didn't want him to be late getting back to work. She felt her phone vibrating in her pocket again, and a quick glance at it to see that it wasn't Maddy at all, but her mother. Her golden eyes went wide, and she refrained from answering it just yet, not wanting to be rude to Jett. It did, however, rush her speech a little. "So, the next time we meet, you will teach me a few pointers in boxing, AND tell me a little story about the Surrounding and those kids? That sounds like a plan..."

'Mom wouldn't be calling if she didn't have something important to say...' Gwen thought to herself, not hitting the ignore button this time and merely waiting for it to go to voicemail. Whatever it was, it could wait until she at least said her goodbyes and made plans for their next meeting. "I hate to bail so quickly, but that's my mom on the phone. Can I just come by at any time or is there a place we can meet for the boxing lessons?"

Jett held his hands up as if in understanding and polite dismissal. “No, no. By all means, go ahead. Here,” he pulled out a folded piece of paper—someone’s discarded receipt from the store—and a pen and printed his number in a decidedly formal script. Sliding the paper over, he simultaneously stood and pocketed his pen. “You shoot me a call or text and we can set up some time. I’ve go work, but it’s a pretty malleable schedule for now, so as long as I’ve got a little bit of time in advance, anything works for me.”

Though he had allowed Gwen to buy his lunch, he was determined to still be some sort of gentleman, so snagged the bag of trash from their meal and offered a little wave. There were plenty of trashcans on the way back to the store, and he could save her at least that little hassle. “I’ll catch you later. Thanks for lunch,” he said, making the extra effort to flash her such a flattering smile.

It was hard not to want to blush at the sight of his smile, but Gwen reminded herself that he was not only taken, but definitely out of her league, and she forced the urge to squee down and turned it into a smile instead.

"See ya later, then!" Gwen called back, waiting until he was out of sight before spinning around and practically jumping off and away from the bench in a hurry to get to a quieter spot. Though he was gone, her mind lingered on him still, even as she punched in her mother's phone number hastily into the keypad. "I can't believe how lucky his girlfriend is... I'd kill to be that lucky!"

Well, she wouldn't really kill anyone for something like that, though she was saying a few prayers for luck as she tried to return her mother's call. Hopefully it wasn't anything too serious that would warrant a ten, twenty minute lecture before getting to the meat of the purpose of her call. Of course, she'd have to come up with a lie as to why she didn't answer immediately.

"Telling her that I was too busy talking about getting boxing lessons and dating advice from a guy would get me killed for sure!" Gwen thought with a grin, waiting eagerly for someone to answer on the other end. What luck she would have that her mom was returning the favor with a game of phone tag... oh well, at least she could look forward to seeing Jett again in the future, even if she had to sneak out of the house again to do so. "Soon, I will be able to stand toe to toe with the likes of Remarque... just you wait!"
