Ink well, please be well...

Ulmuka was very good at being behaved. He was also very good at not touching anything when warned ahead of time. The instructors had not outright said it, but he felt like he was sitting in his father's study, listening to him wax poetic about responsibilities and proper etiquette. He'd keep his hands to himself, regardless of how interesting everything around him seemed to be.

The strix didn't have question but did wait a moment, observing his peers actions before he started on his own ink. Art was not a strong skill of his but he was good at watching and he seemed to have caught onto this very quickly. He only added a tiny bit of water to his ink base. He paused again, looking at a neighbor's work once more. After a few moments he moved on to the second step. He pounded down the ink cake as much as he could. Not too much, not too little.

His end result was not perfect but it was a pretty good attempt.

Ink well, please be well...

It was the morning of their first class, and Hadiyya couldn't quite hide the excited smile that kept creeping along dark lips as she entered the circular room they'd been directed to. She paid no heed to the shoe rack beside the door, and didn't so much as pause as she crossed the threshold, already bare feet touching softly against the cool marble floor.

Everything about their classroom was beautiful. From the intricate filigree carved into the beams over head, to the ribbons of color in the marble floor. Most spectacularly though were the wall hangs. Each and everyone was so obviously painted with dedication and love, and it showed in every detail, every brushed stroke of ink. The djinn couldn't help but move closer, walking slowly around the room so she could take in each scene separately, as they were meant to be admired. She was at a lovely painting of a mountain valley when the first voice filtered through the curtain, and she turned to face the front of the room by the time the elegant lady had made her entrance.

As Professor Zhang spoke, Hadiyya listened intently. Keenly interested in learning this new, and yet almost familiar form of artistic expression. The entire island thus far reminded her of home, so similar, but so very different. It was bright, elegant, richly exotic, and breathtakingly beautiful. The nobility, the culture, all familiar. Even now, ink painting, reminded the ghoul of the intricate henna work done by her own, and similar people back in the sun parched deserts she used to call home.

Tables were set out, and Yaya took her seat behind one, long legs folding under her as her palms smoothed her skirts along her thighs.

As carefully as she could she added a couple small drops of water to the stone slab in front of her, then slid the bowl away once she was finished with it. As always when her element was near it was tempting to toy with the fluid , but she resisted, and instead concentrated on grinding her ink with the mortar.

Ink well, please be well...

The Reaper came to the large doors with a slight tinge of confusion written on her features as she looked at all the shoes that had been left outside of the class but shrugged and continued into the room. The ghoul never wore shoes so there was no need for her to leave them behind. Upon entering the class she promptly found herself a spot on the right side of the room, not really paying any attention to her fellow classmates or who she was or wasn't by. In fact the ghoul was completely lost in her thoughts she barely even noticed the horsewoman or her counterpart.

However, when Professor Zhang clapped she snapped out of her daydream and instantly put herself into class mode. When the tables were sat before them she smiled and admired the items before sitting down with her legs folded under her. This was more up her ally. Not that she had ever made ink before, but for a ghoul who depended solely on writing for contact with others it certainly seemed like a fantastic idea. Once they had received their instructions and details on what their ink should look like Circe began to pour her water into the stone slab. Curiously she looked around the room in an attempt to see if there was anyone she knew, near her. However, her attention quickly shifted back to the stone slab. "Jack!" She cursed quietly. Circe had added to much water to her stone slab and it was now spilling out.

The ghoul sighed and rubbed her tattoo on her forehead. She needed to pay better attention. Maybe now might be a good time to recall on the meditation they had done during the War class. As her hand dropped to the mortar she quickly made up her mind that it might not be the best time to do that. Her opposite hand reached for the ink and she followed suit in what their professor had instructed.

After several minutes Circe realized that making ink wasn't as easy as it looked. She was using a light amount of force when mixing the water and the ink. After several more minutes her blend still wasn't turning out the way it was supposed to but she wasn't going to be detoured. "Come on." Circe said, biting gently at her bottom lip.

Ink making huh? Enzo was not usually one for arts and crafts. He had slacked so hard in Famine, though, there was the chance of getting in trouble which honestly he wasn't looking for just now.

He had heard many inks were made by crushing insects. Once again he was left with an unnerving pang of wistful missing of his vermin. He probably could have added such nice color undertones to his mixture if they had been here. Alas. He concentrated instead on his mixture.

Right. He added a little bit of water, giving the concoction a stir. Well... that was looking... inky? Maybe just grind it a bit more... yeah, yeah, that was definitely looking inky. He could do this!

Ink well, please be well...

It was weird, going from fighting for her life in a forest to playing with inks in a city built for kings. The ghoul was uncomfortable, and even that was an understatement. Everything she did, she was pretty sure she was doing wrong. Every step she took barefoot was like she was tearing someone apart piece by piece if the looks of digust and horror were any indication. This was a different kind of battle, and one she was certainly not suited for; fighting for her life was easier than etiquette.

She listened to the lecture, she watched the demonstrations, but when it came time for her to do it herself...it didn't go so well. It was likely because she was already flustered over the whole ordeal of this isle, or maybe it was because she was just that bad at it, but her ink was barely ink.

It was cereal. Watery cereal.

Amrita let out a whine of discomfort, a low eeeeee to herself. This wasn't good. This sucked. Someone trade this ink stuff for a dagger - hell, a rock! No, even her fists! Anything, anything but what she was doing now! Her single grey eye watched with despair as some of the water flowed out of the slab, but she couldn't give up. A battle was a battle, even if she was incredibly awkward and really only wanted to curl up in a ball.

Pretending that everything was okay, she set to grounding the ink. This time, she seemed to have a little bit better luck, but the fact remained:

Amrita and Ink were not friends.

Ink well, please be well...

It was a new day, the clothes Invictus had promised had indeed arrived and Sammy wore them just the same. It was strange, almost a burden, yet at the same time it helped her feel more comfortable among the horsemen here. With War she simply carried herself as she always did, rough and wild, today she moved more slowly, she tried to stand straight. Ever piece of teasing advice Siddie had even given her about how to act like a 'lady ghoul' where being forced out. Her purple eyes flickered side to side, though she hated to admit it deep down, she did like how the black robes blended with her purple eyes.

Some of the clansmen had given her odd looks, she wore the outfit of a knight, of a man, yet clearly wasn't the part. Still others nodded faintly at her acknowledging her attempt to fit into the community.

When she arrived to the first class she shuffled her feet at the door kicking off the strange slipper like shoes that had come with the outfit. She really hoped no one stared at her much as she shuffled into the room. The cool floor was a vast change from the rough warm wood of war, the room enclosed instead of an open space.

Eventually the class started, tablets and tables where brought out and Sammy stared long and quietly. "Making ink.... painting..." She frowned ever so slightly as she sat down on her knees staring at her supplies. Very carefully she added the water, it wasn't great, it was just okay, enough really.

Next came the hard part, she lifted the ink cake placing it on the stone getting the motar ready, very carefully she pressed it down against the ink, it seemed okay. Everything was fine she started to press harder smooshing the ink cake.

Then ink cake cracked and obliterated itself, it didn't really look like a consistant ink blend. For a long while she knelt there simply staring at the mess she had started to make. She took a deep sigh, it served no purpose other then to punctuate her own disappointment in her mistakes.

Ink well, please be well...

As Deacon entered for the class, he briefly looked to the sign requesting the removal of footwear, a small smirk gracing his lips. Since he never wore shoes, at least he was already ready to step inside. He took in all of the intricate paintings and carvings around and above him. It was impressive, for sure.

After the brief introduction given by the Professors, he selected a spot to sit once the additional tables were brought in. Deacon wasn't so sure about making ink, but surely it shouldn't be too difficult a task. He wouldn't fail at it, surely. Quietly watching the methods of Professor Zhang - or, at least what he could see from where he was seated - before looking down to his own materials. He didn't push up his sleeves; left only to hope that he wouldn't get ink on them.

Picking up the cup of water, Deacon tipped it carefully with the intentions of adding the smallest amount. Unfortunately, he tipped it a bit too far and added more than he liked. He hissed softly under his breath, his ears falling back in displeasure. At least it didn't run off, and he could still make due. Taking up the mortar he ground the cake of ink with deliberate care. It appeared that adding so much water wasn't hindering it badly, and after a little bit Deacon had a decent consistency in his ink. It wasn't perfect, but it certainly wasn't too bad for a first try, he thought.

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

Lumi had found herself standing in front of the building once again, that wonderfully beautiful building she thought as she slipped her shoes off quietly at the door. Bowing lowly to both instructors before she took a seat in front of a table. Listening to the instructions she looked down at the parchment and ink, paint...she cringed slightly. This was not her strong suit.

Biting her lower lip she dips the brush in to the water, a little too much water. Looking around franticly for something to soak the dripping water. Hoping no one noticed she took the edge of her hanbok and dried the brush. Sighing a little as she finally got it manageable. It wasn't like the poor thing wasn't ruined already after week one. Shaking her head trying not to think about it she turned to the paper.

Putting the semi dried brush down on the paper a little too hard, and watching the ink bleed everywhere. GAH! This was NOT going as planned. Trying to paint around the large black splotch, Lumi finally managed to get something resembling a beast. As she sat in thought she carefully and painstakingly added the details of the eyes. Smiling happy with her creation she blinked a few times. Had that beast just blinked before it vanished?

Shaking her head she figured it just must be an illusion her mind playing tricks on her. Looking around she finally raised her hand wanting to ask a question of the instructors.

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

Returning to the class the next day, Poke saw the new layout of the class and how they would be facing each other today. Sitting herself down behind one of the tables, she watched Shanzhu roll out a scroll in front of them, and instructed them to paint a beast. It didn't sound like a very difficult task, although she didn't think herself much a painter.

Carefully picking up the brush, she transfered the item to the paper, thankfully without any major problems occurring. But as she tried to paint out her beast, she found herself applying to much force to her brush. The paper was soaking it all up, and before long she had herself a big blob on the paper. Frowning, she tried to salvage her picture, drawing around the blob and working it into her beast. Finally, she worked on the eyes, Hoping that they...looked alright.

User Image

It was...well, it wasn't a masterpiece, but she hoped it would be good enough for the professors. As soon as she had finished...wait, did the eyes just blink? Before she could get a second look, her picture was gone, now next to the river.

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

If Rikki failed just grinding the ink, he was pretty positive he had no hope actually painting something. He peered at the beautiful scene he was supposed to paint a creature for and frowned. Did they really expect that he was going to make something worth being on that scene? There was no way.

He swirled his brush in the ink and immediately realized he'd made a mistake. There was way too much ink soaked up into the bristles. He frowned and glanced around wildly for something to use to soak a little of it up. The best he could come up with was a loose piece of paper that no one was using. The real difficult thing was reaching it without lifting up his brush and getting ink everywhere. He stretched his arm out and could barely even brush the edge of the paper. He grunted and shifted over just a little, trying to keep an eye on the brush and his hand at the same time, which resulted in a very concentrated lowering of his brow and his tongue sticking out. With a final grunt he snatched up the paper and blotted the ink until his brush was no longer a danger to all things white.

He had no idea what to paint though. Rikki stared blankly at the page. What kind of creature was good to paint for a class? Should he make one up? He decided it was probably best to stick with something he knew, so he put the brush to the page and began to carefully outline Ruska, his florejox. He thought it looked pretty good, especially before it was actually finished, but the final product was more like a shapeless blob with ears. He smiled at it though, because at least it had ears. That made it look like Ruska, right? Yep.

Eyes were more difficult. How was he supposed to capture Ruska's beady little eyes? In the end, he decided to just pain circles with little openings toward the center. As he picked up the brush from the final stroke, the eyes seemed to come alive with all the excited energy of his little jox and then the painting disappeared. When he turned to look at the scene on the scroll, it was standing there, no longer gleaming back at him with the life of his minipet.

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

Finally they were going to paint something! Mei was excited to put the ink she'd made yesterday to good use. And what better way than to use it to paint? Taking a seat at one of the tables to the left of the room she grasped the brush she intended to use while pulling out the stone that held her ink.

She dipped her brush into the ink carefully, trying not to spill any. And especially trying not to let it drip onto the paper. Slowly but surely she painted away, trying to create some sort of beast, nothing too ferocious though. She wanted to paint something elegant and beautiful. But apparently it decided it wanted to become a big blob on the paper.

Biting her bottom lip with a frown, she let out a little sigh. Oh well. If she was to have a blob beast a blob beast it would be. Dipping her brush into the ink again she began to add a bit more detail to the blob the best she could. Finally coming to the end where she added the eyes.

The eyes seemed to gleam with life which startled her momentarily. And as she lifted her brush from the paper the blob beast disappeared only to reappear on the scroll painting. This paper was super special she knew, but she didn't think it could transfer what she painted to another piece of paper.

How neat!

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

Danny took a seat at one of the low tables and began idly rocking her paintbrush back and forth. The teacher lecture was so boring. She could've just slammed her head on the table and conked out there if she wasn't afraid of the conquest horsemen scolding her a** off. Rules, rules, etiquette, etiquette. It had literally been two days and she already felt like she was going to tear her face off.

Luckily today it seemed like a pretty easy day. They were just painting things and something about putting eyes. That didn't sound so bad! Especially not compared to the classes at Amityville where teachers ate the students.

Once the miniature lecture was over, Danny grabbed her ink from the other day and got down to work.

Truth be told, Danny wasn't technically that bad with a brush. As she stroked, the lines were steady, nothing dripped. It all connected fluidly, nothing going way off the borders, nothing sticking directly to the center. There wasn't a drop of water on the table (though that could be attributed to the fact that Danny didn't want to spill any of it near her body, but we won't go into detail.)

The real problem came with ... what she drew.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

She would tell you it was a firebreathing pony, but honestly it looked like a ball of spaghetti. It just wasn't artistic in any way shape or form. The flames? Looked like vomit. The tail was some sort of fountain spouting from a blob in the center. Wings? What were those even.

The long story short was that her fire pony was s**t, but you know what? She loved her fire pony. LOVED IT.

She drew on the eyes like she was supposed to, and the "beast" vanished in seconds, almost like it wanted to get AWAY from its creator. Danny set her brush down for the first time and looked around, wondering if anyone else was doing as badly as she was. She giggled and noticed that Roch's weren't the most artistic either. Hers were definitely a thousand jillion million times better, and there was nothing he could do about it!

Satisfied, she raised her hand straight in the air, bowed and said, "Okay can I please leave now I finished okay." Before the teacher could even tell her how she was messing up, she darted out the door.

Riley returned, assuming that today's lesson would use ink to paint. She was proven right as she viewed the materials on her desk, and after being given instructions, she got to work. The brush was dipped in ink and picked up carefully, shaken to get all the excess off before brought to the paper. Before she could actually paint, however, someone bumped into her from behind, and her brush splattered against the paper, leaving a giant blob soaked in. She sighed sharply, and looked at the mess for a moment, before deciding to work around it. A few brushstrokes around the blob, and soon enough she had drawn an elephant, with trunklike hooves and a large, bulbous head. When she dotted it's tiny little beady eyes, the ink of the eyes seemed to flatten and disappear for just a second, before the entire animal left her page. It almost looked link blinking, but there was no time to investigate. It was gone, off to join it's fellow ink animals on the canvas, and her task for the day was complete.

Rise, my beautiful Beast!

The ghost’s posture could be best described as bent. The ghost sat before his table. His legs were crossed and a bent elbow rest on one knee. His head was propped up by his hand, while the other hand just hung at his side. He had a bed head. His eyes though, were wide open, mainly due to the fact that he had no eye lids at the moment and by choice. His mouth was arched for a smile, though he wasn’t happy.

He lazy dragged his hand across the floor, letting the sleeves drop, and picked up the brush. He lathered its end with the sooty inky with skill, like he’s done it a thousand times before and placed it on the paper. The brush had taken too much water since his ink was a little watered down. But he could handle it.

The ghost looked down at his paper, moving the brush effortlessly, and without even lifting the brush off the paper. He could have done it with a few strokes, but the ghost’s heart seemed like it wasn’t in it. Fortunately, the ghost did have experience with painting that he was able to draw his beast’s body. The beast did look a little odd, but perhaps it would work.

When it came to the eyes, the ghost’s apathy was apparent as the blobs were basically just that, blobs. The slimer just lazily dotted the paper with ugly marks. The ghost noticed that it seemed to be blink, and even move.

The ghost just reacted by raising a brow.
