The chimera snatched a reed out of the boil's hand and shook it threateningly at him. A clansman seemed to notice, giving Taryn a scolding head shake. ...well, so chimera weren't very good at nesting. That wasn't a surprise. She kicked all of her bedding into the wind, watching it tumble... how was her team doing?!

"Nesting". Why would . . . well he supposed making a bed for the night was a good plan if you were, well, actually concerned about sleep. But the undead, zombies especially, were not noted for their need to doze - or for nesting. Or survival skills really. Well s**t.
Taryn hadn't done so well, and he patted her back in passing to try and help her spirits a bit before heading out, trying not to draw stares from the younger clansmen as he made his way to the jagged area. Mort was sure they wouldn't bug him too much if he tried to camp there, right? Rafe looked right at home at least - maybe this wouldn't be so bad.

As he went to gather his materials, Rafe glanced over at Taryn. She'd done so well with the climbing! He was both amused and a little saddened to see her having so much trouble now. Ah well...that was a rough patch of luck.
Man...there was not a whole lot left over to choose from. Sighing, he took his pick from the materials that were left -- some string, some rocks, and some bones. This....was not looking promising.
4- Twine (+1 if Back to back) 6- Fist sized rocks (+1 if stolen spot) 8- Bones of some large animal (+1 if sandy patch)

Rafael grinned at Mort, who seemed to be settling nearby. "Do zombies nest?" He asked, somewhat seriously, mostly jokingly. Somehow it didn't seem very likely.
Not for the first time, he was feeling pretty annoyed at his inability to change forms. He had never realized just how much he relied on being able to turn into a rat at a moment's notice! This nest....was not very comfortable. And it would've been so easy to just crawl up in a crack and snooze in his natural form, too! Blah.
1-5: Wow, pretty painful. You’re not sure you’d be able to sleep at all! (fail)

Mort gave him a strange look, like "uhhhhhhhhh". "No, we don't," he decided to say, wondering what kind of education this kid got. Or maybe he was joking? But Rafe didn't sound like he was joking . . .
Well at any rate, it was time to decorate his little "home away from home". With a bit of effort, Mort managed to find a sturdy piece of wood to pace in the center of his area, covered by a rather ratty sheet. He then took she of the aboriginal rocks and arranged them like a sort of fence around him, hoping this would ward off any horsemen youth too curious for their own good. Not that he didn't mind curiosity and interaction, but the looks he got from some of them . . . no thanks.
Rocky Outcropping 10 - Plank of wood (+1 if Rocky outcropping) 11 - Worn out sheet (+1 if Sandy patch) 6 - Fist sized rocks (+1 if stolen spot)

Seeing the disapproving look the teacher gave Rafe when she passed by, he attempted to whipper to him that maybe adding more sand would make it comfier - only the boil was now having at it with some of the locals. They really did take things seriously here . . . Okay, Mort, make the team look good!
Dumping some sand onto his "bed", Mort stood and took the passable result with a sigh as the teacher merely walked by him. Well no notice was good, right? He rubbed his face down to calm himself and spat sand out. Jack, he hated the stuff.
6-10: Not the best, you’d probably wake up in pain the next morning. (pass)

"Didn't think so," Rafe replied. He turned around in a circle, trying to think of a way he could possibly make this nest any more comfortable. Having better materials would help....
HEY! What the...
Rafe blinked, realizing that he had company, and it wasn't a zombie.
"This spot's mine," the kid said.
"Like Jack it is!" Rafe replied back, shoving his glasses rather angrily up his nose.
A sudden, wicked idea crept into his head, and without any warning he jumped nimbly free of his outcropping and darted down to where the kid was had come from. Aha! new materials!
Except the kid didn't have anything worth taking. Grumbling, the rat-boil dug through the materials, looking for something -- anything -- that would help. That dumb liar! That wasn't his spot at all! If the kid's spot really had been the rocks...he would've had better materials.
Rafael was muttering about this unfairness when he realized that someone else was very, very close.....and it was the instructor. Who wasn't overly pleased with the rat's newfangled klepto streak.
oops.

Looks like the second they snatched Rafe's spot away, the decided Mort was prey next. The same one came up and demanded that he give the spot back, which . . . yeah no. Mort was no stranger to bullies and was not willing to give up his hard-earned spot, even if it was a piece of s**t. His punch was blocked, however, and returned with one which he barely guarded against.
Needless to say, he was not going down easy.

Fighting back didn't seem to be looking good. The clansman, however young, was definitely Mort's rival in skill, if not his better. He would have to think fast, and soon. With a growl the zomboil sent a shock the next time the skeletal youth attempted to punch him, sending him backwards with a yowl. With the time given, the zomboil jogged to where he presumed the guy's spot was and snatched some of the grass, hobbling back just as the boil recovered. He smirked as the teacher intervened just in time to tell the guy off and go back to his spot, either ignoring the fact the he'd just been robbed, or simply not having seen.
Either way, Mort now had a scenic yard to go with his home.

Unfortunately, picking as bare of a place as the outcropping meant that he had so little resources to work with. Try as he did to dig for more rocks to make for better defenses, Mort was left with nothing but the larger boulders he could not carry on his own. The teacher gave him a small nod for his efforts at coming this far, but dismissed him.

Smerdle Environmental StudiesYou're sure you've followed the directions you were given, but upon reaching the spot where the training field you're looking for is supposed to be, you see and feel nothing but blinding sunlight and intense heat.
Just as you're about to turn around and head back to the sickly-looking creature who directed you to this barren spot in the first place, a section of the desert seems to shift as a pale young clan member pushes a sandy tarp out of his way. He stands up straight in front of you, his skeletal hands brushing at the front of his robes.
"Welcome!" he says, managing to squeeze more reckless enthusiasm from that one word than most members of the clan of Famine probably have in all their years of speaking. He leads you down into the hole the tarp was covering. The space inside is clean and cool. "You may call me Ktur, fledgling. Today we'll be working with some of... well... these things!" He gestures at six boxes, identical in size, but with wildly different contents. Each resembles a human child's diorama, only slightly larger and with considerably more movement inside. Oh, and they're also entirely made of glass. And almost all closed up. Maybe they don't look much like dioramas at all.
Ktur pushes one toward you. "Here, this one seems to suit."Quote: Determine which miniature environment Ktur has chosen for you.Roll 1d6.1: The box Ktur directed you toward looks a lot like the surroundings outside: bleak, bright, and sandy. You will be working with a desert environment. 2: You can barely make out a tiny mountain and a stand of snow-topped pine trees through the mess of whirling snow. You will be working with an arctic environment. 3: A heavy mist hangs low in this box, but the treetops that blanket its highest points are a bright cheerful green under the sun. You will be working with a rainforest environment. 4: Your box seems almost boring compared to some of the others left on the table. Inside stretches a large field covered with tall grasses that wave in the breeze. You will be working with a prairie environment. 5: You've seen fish tanks? Well, Ktur hopes you like this one. You will be working with an underwater environment. 6: Woo! You're on fiah! Or at least your box is. You will be working with a volcanic environment. "Now," the horseman continues, "I've been doing a lot of research on these, and boy, do I mean a lot. What we're trying to have happen here is a whole... growing... situation, but some of these places just don't seem to like plants and animals very much, or at least the kinds anyone can live on." He looks at you with a measure of ominous sincerity, the bangles in his hair tinkling merrily in opposition to his demeanor. "Go forth! Experiment! Shine lights on it, throw some FEAR in there, shake it, whatever you think will get things to grow." One of his wings juts out at random, almost knocking a nearby potion off of the table. Quote: Each environment has 30 HP, except for the prairie which has 40. Roll 1d12 and follow the prompt corresponding to your roll. Continue rolling until you have either obtained three Horseman Points or your environment runs out of HP.1: FIRE! Something catches fire inside your diorama. Try channeling a little bit of FEAR in there. It might help. Or maybe not. You lose 5 HP in desert and rainforest environments, 10 HP on the prairie, and none underwater, in the arctic, or on the volcano.2: Whatever you tried this time, nothing happens. Ktur looks at you as if you're close to one of the most worthless things he's ever seen. Then he goes back to picking at his toenails with a grungy stick. 3: There's too much water! You lose 5 HP in the volcano and arctic, 2 HP in the rainforest and prairie, and none in the underwater and desert environments.4: What's that? Whatever you just did caused a tiny, colorful flower to sprout in your environment. The landscape is so small you can barely see it, but Ktur seems impressed. You earn one Horsemen Point.5: Did you fall asleep? It sure seems that way for all the good you're doing. Luckily, nothing happens. 6: A swarm of vicious looking bugs appear out of nowhere and burrow into the ground, ruining any progress you have made and leaving a bunch of giant holes in their wake. You lose 15 HP.7: If you are working with the underwater environment, suddenly your whole diorama goes black. When the water clears, all the tiny plants and animals are gone. You lose 5 HP. If you are not working with an underwater diorama, nothing happens. 8: In a moment of frustration, you shake, kick, yell at, or even look at your environment wrong. You lose 5 HP.9: You have no idea what you did wrong, but your environment is suddenly looking worse for wear. You lose 3 HP.10: A tiny animal scrambles into view, then disappears back into hiding. Ktur deems the appearance of the beast a wild success! You earn one Horsemen Point.11: Ktur approaches you and tries to assist. His attempts do absolutely nothing. Maybe that's why he asked you to help in the first place. 12: A pack of what look like little gnomes appear in your diorama. They light a tiny bonfire (yes, even underwater) and generally mess up the joint. The desert, volcano, arctic and underwater environments lose 2 HP, the prairie loses 10, and the rainforest is unaffected. Horsemen Points - Match your dice roll to the results above while playing. You obtain points according to if it declares a win on that roll

Rafe knew that his time on the Isle of Famine was coming to a close, and he wasn't sure at all how he felt about it. On the one hand, he wasn't too attached to the place. It was dusty and creepy and full of bugs and killer plants.
On the other hand, all of his friends were here and it seemed like nobody would be going with him to Conquest, which made him very sad.
Knowing that his week was coming to a close, Rafe decided to focus especially on his lessons today -- which is why he was so pleased with the direction things seemed to be taking as soon as they arrived.
"He's a bit....cheerful-er than the usual batch, isn't he?" Rafe muttered out of the corner of his mouth to Taryn after Ktur had given his spiel.
This, so far, didn't seem too bad. The ecosystems were all contained in glass, which made them much less likely to try and kill him. And the instructor seemed both enthusiastic and interesting -- and Rafe could understand him -- so that all seemed like a good sign. He just hoped he was right.
He took the display with the mist, interested to see what might happen. Were there tiny monkeys in there? wouldn't that be awesome?

This young man was... a nice break from the likes of Professor Bulbous and the others. The old woman had been kind enough, but this... was enthusiasm. She could get behind that! Taryn grinned as she was handed the rainforest diorama... box... terrarium... thing.
So they had to make things grow! Rainforests were already such wonderful sources of life, though... she wasn't sure she could make it any better! She'd have to try...
