Cass' answer earned a nod of approval from the division leader. "Excellent. Considering the unique... aspects of your weapon, training for you is going to be a bit difficult." Aria tapped her lips thoughtfully, thinking. "You could look into combining some training courses, such as the shadow run: shoot enemies first, then when they're close cut them down. Just don't get too caught up in trying to keep an eye on both enemies close and those far away."

Oops, she was lecturing again. Aria shrugged it off, picking up a duck and showing it to Cass. "How do you think we'll carry them? If we do it like this..." Aria held it by the head, nodding towards it. "First off, it's gross. Secondly, the wings get all over the place. We're just going to tie them up so we have an easier time carrying them..." Aria motioned for Cass to get a length of twine, and showed her how to bind them.

"It looks like Beau has to sniff a few out," Aria said after a moment, working with Cass to bind them. "Otherwise... I think we're set for awhile as far as food goes. Once we're back at the lodge, I'll show you how to prepare them. We could turn one into a meal now, then either smoke the rest or freeze it..."

Aria's advice was sound, and the Shadow Run was likely the safest place for her to practice that sort of maneuvering. Maybe she'd use it to try and practice some ambidextrous habits as well. Cass nodded as she put the 'lecture' into mental storage. "I'll give that some practice, then. Would probably be a good focus-training too." To keep her eye on the prize instead of well..everywhere.

"Plus there's a lot more of 'em than I think I'd want to carry in both arms..." she added on the note of why just transporting the ducks as-was would be kind of...messy. She couldn't help but take a moment to look at one of her kills up close, turning it over thoughtfully before she shook her head.

It was food, and while it was sad, yes, she would just have to be respectful of the meat and not just..waste it. She'd killed a lot of them too..... good thing people back home were probably hungry. She'd share a bit, she figured, as she unwound the twine, taking a the knife out of the inner pocket of her vest to cut it (handy already), before she tucked it back away again.

The binding was a bit messier than she would have though, though, with parts everywhere to get in line, but Aria had been right - it was much more effective for transport that way. Which meant real food was in her future - her stomach might have garbled appreciatively at the idea, causing Cass to blush a bit.

"I think we could probably a little bit of both just so we can use them in different ways." Cass suggested at the idea of either smoking or freezing the meat.

"Smoking takes time, but it's worth it," Aria replied. "Take pork for instance. Smoking bacon can take up to three days, though considering we're dealing with ducks here it shouldn't take that long... hypothetically." She shrugged. "Chances are someone rigged some runes up to some of the machines in the cabin since I was last here. If we're lucky, we won't be spending the rest of the night plucking feathers off of these."

The last of the ducks was retrieved and dropped at their feet, followed by Beau sitting down and looking expectantly. "Good job, Beau!" Aria cooed, petting the dog before reaching aside to grab two sticks. Using more twine, Aria tied the feet of ducks to them, five each until both sticks had ducks dangling from them. "All right, let's g- wait." The Mist lead disassembled the blinders that hid them before, taking a moment to place the safety back onto her rifle and unload it before motioning to Cass. "There. Now let's go."

They began to walk back up the path, Beau all but prancing alongside them while they walked. Aria glanced to Cass, then back ahead. "There are a couple other places like this," she offered after a moment's pause. "When you've been around for awhile, you'll see more. I have a... place in the Himalayas."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 14, 2012 9:32 pm

"Mmhmm, and it's a bit more of an immediate provision thing rather than waiting to thaw a duck, I'd think." Cass imagined their being 'hopeful' about smoking their catch would end up being them sitting there for a few days like 'whyyyy'. Never the less, as Beau made her last return, Cass took a moment to rub the lab down, showering her with praise. "Good girl, Beau! You got them! You got those ducks good, didn't you girl?" Gushgushomgpuppy.

Cass did her best to help with the clean-up as well, not wanting to be a burden on the more experienced woman, but finding everything fascinating. It was like a small field trip of awesomeness. Why couldn't ghost hunting as a kid done cool stuff like this? Instead of..creepy houses.

Always buildings.

"Really? I think this is really neat. I'd like to have more outings like this. I dunno, it's relaxing, I guess." she nodded. "And it smells nice too." she added. "Wait, the Himalayas? That's in like... ummm..India-china-russia-somewhere-over-there." she answered hurriedly. Ha! Wikipedia-reading in the car finally served her some good! "Man, I really want to go to India someday too...that'd be fun.." she seemed to sigh dreamily before she shook her head and got back on topic with an awkward laugh.

"Guess I'll just have to keep surviving so I can go to all those places. It's been nice, though. I don't regret living this way."

Aria nodded in agreement to Cass' assessment. "Exactly. In addition, if you decide to thaw it out in a microwave... Well. Let's just say you'll attract quite the crowd." Aria waved her hand vaguely. "We'll figure something out. When in doubt, we can get several fires going and cook as many as we can. Or pop'em all into an oven or stew or something."

The talk of going places earned a quick grin from Aria. "You'd be surprised at how many places you've probably been already. Our sort of work takes us all over the world to many different places. When I was a trainee, I did most of my training in Africa. It was..." Aria trailed off, shifting the weight of the ducks in her hand and her rifle on her other shoulder. "It was rough, but the training was invaluable. I don't think I could replicate it, nor do I think I want to."

The division leader left it at that, changing the topic. "Is there anything in particular you want done with the ducks aside from changing them into rations? It you can sew, we could probably hold onto the feathers so you can make a pillow. Though I honestly don't know much about that," she quickly added with a laugh. "All I know is that pillows are filled with feathers of some sort."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 17, 2012 5:19 pm

Cass's expression sort of glazed over at the notion of sewing. "..I tried to sew something once...and I completely ruined it and someone else had to save it for me..." she replied slowly. It might have explained why her trainee coat had been so short. In fact, that was the exact item she was referring to.

"I think just rations is the safest course of action right now. If the feathers and bones can be used by someone else, we can toss 'em into a bag and hold onto them until that point in time, but...I can't think of what I'd use 'em for." Besides to tickle people's noses and wake them up, but she'd lived a rather unfortunately sheltered existence.

"Maybe there's some sort of casserole we could make with 'em. Those keep well, don't they? I mean, mom used to make one that was chicken, stuffing, cheese, and broccoli right after thanksgiving with leftovers when I was little, so something like that, perhaps?" There was actually more to it than that, but any box of Stovetop would have that exact recipe on it, though.

"Though I don't have a lot of space in my room to store food in either." she sighed. "So I'd have to work around that a bit. I mean, I got a small thing to put under my bed last Christmas just to put various things in, but it won't hold a lot of big things."

Aria's turn to wear the glazed expression came at the suggestion of casseroles. Ask Aria how to set up a pit trap and she'll tell you how. Ask her how to fight a bear and she'll demonstrate it. Ask her to go into the kitchen and make you a sandwich and... she could do that, actually. Though depending on who asked, there was a possibility that the sandwich would be a last request.

But cooking? Fancy cooking? Fancy cooking with pots and pans and specifications? You lost Aria there. "I... maybe...? You can certainly experiment to see if you can replicate it," Aria began slowly. "Otherwise there's a refrigerator in the Mist Lounge you can store things in, providing it's still in one piece. There's the chance that someone else may take some, though. Otherwise there's mine... but that requires catching me in order to get into that."

And there was still a chance that someone would've taken some. Aria was about to say more when Beau stopped, tail tucked between her legs. The dog whined once, backing up rapidly before she took off running into the forest.

"Beau! s**t, this isn't good." Aria grabbed her shotgun, glanced at it, then dropped it before grabbing her flamethrower. The foliage rustled as several dark, shadowy forms charged out of the underbrush at the hunters!

Shapeless, shadowy forms are now attacking! Roll to attack. If you miss, you aren't damaged... but a duck is stolen from you.

You can roll to attack five times for this round.

Cass frowned a bit. "Maybe I'll ask Marcus about it. He..knows how to cook." Cass wasn't even sure how to preheat the oven. Like Aria, cooking was not a..thing...for Cass. She hadn't had a real kitchen growing up after so many years, after all. They were.... well, all she knew was that Zuul was in Julie's fridge. She wasn't sure how Zuul had gotten there, but the Hunters probably wanted to go check that out at some point in time.

"Well, I don't think I'd mind sharing with the other mists so much, as long as they didn't take everything, but I....Beau...?" Cass seemed to notice her favorite widdle doggikins in the whole wide world had just taken up a startled position, and the advice Aria had given her earlier about animals and denizen activity flushed into her head. Like Aria, Cass drew Nicodemus, frowning at the dark shapes coming towards them.

"God damn it." she grumbled underneath her breath.

If Aria had been questioning Cass's ability to swing her blade around, Cass's answer would have been clear in the very full-on blow she swung through the closest assailant, not even wasting a moment as she forced the blade into it.

I can see that, Dad.

It was as Nicodemus said for her to keep moving, however, as Cass was blown into by one of them, reeling back in surprise before swearing as it made off with one of the ducks in her possession. That was not cool!

I told you.

<>

That was annoying, and it put a very flat expression on Cass's face in response.

She recovered well enough from that first grab, fortunately, forcing the next of the shadowy-formless creatures away from her. Geeze, these things were out there in the trees too? That was just.... they didn't really relent, but they had to be put down anyways.

For their own sakes.

She made a point to switch hands once the immediate threats had been forced away. She still had three bullets in Nicodemus right then, after all, and he'd been wise to tell her to save them, firing upon the next one and making a point to get it right in the face.

Not that it seemed to do much besides get it away from her.

One shot down, a fifth sliced through. Cass switched hands off again to forcibly shove the fifth one back with a slice of her blade. Two bullets left, better to save them.

But still, five strikes down, and it seemed she'd been given a little bit of breathing room, her attention turning to Aria with a look of 'well?' Because Beau had bolted into the trees and she didn't exactly want to leave the dog to fend for herself with these things around, but she didn't know how many shadows were around either.

The first shadowling dissipated beneath Cassandra's blow. The others were only lightly injured, driven back while one was unscathed and retreated into the forest. The three shadowlings lingered, eying the hunters and their ducks warily. Aria clenched her flamethrower, keeping her eyes on them.

"Cass? Shoot them," Aria ordered. "If I use my flamethrower, there's a chance this place can go up in flames. The sooner we take care of these, the better." As if listening, the shadowlings rushed forward again!

Shoot? Ummmm, she'd see what she could do about that. How quick would Nicodemus be able to reload after she was done with her last two shots?

She wasn't sure, unfortunately, but never the less she was going to obey the directions she was given. Aria was right, they didn't want to set everything on fire because of shadows - she was better equipped for their scenery.

Shooting a moving and attacking creature wasn't as easy as having a few minutes to aim carefully as she had with the ducks, and as she pulled the trigger it seemed like the attack glanced the shadow-y creature just enough to back off.

You're going to have to get me a minute, Cass. Nicodemus insisted and Cass frowned as she fired on the second of the lingering shadows. Again, not her best shooting ever. She needed to practice on moving targets more.

She was grounded, time to put more time into the Shadow run with her gun to work on this pitfall for sure. That was, after these shadows were gone. Because right now, if this was a Shadow Run she was doing a very poor job.
