Well, things have certainly changed. That leaf? It's not so much a leaf anymore. In fact, it's grown into a child of sorts. Well, a toddler. I guess the whole Eden Project thing is real after all. And I've been blessed with a little girl that research tells me is a flower, sorta. A passion flower.

She's very sweet, mostly. Well, maybe sweet isn't the right word. But she's cheeful, curious, and energetic. A bit selfish, I admit, and she's having a hard time learning the difference between things that are hers and things that are Earako's. Which isn't a big deal, except for Vimber.

She keeps following that damned dragon around, like its hers. I'm convinced she's gonna get her head bitten off.

And, yeah, Earako watches her dragon, but she's convinced that it's an angel. So I don't know that she'll notice if it starts looking at Tansi and licking its lips.

Anyway, I'm faced with the problem of toddler proofing a house, again. And I just finished dragon proofing the damn place.

At this point, I might as well just burn everything and say the hell with it.

Still, she's quite amazing.

It's a stage, he told himself, fixing a smile in place as he looked at his daughter. It's a stage, they all go through it, and she'll grow out of it. Except, he couldn't help but remember, Earako had gone through no such thing.

A stage.

"No! I don' wanna! NO!" Tansi announced, stomping little feet and glaring up at him with dark accusation. "You can' make me!"

Michael didn't speak. He simply looked at the girl, reminding himself of how much he loved his daughter, how deeply he cared for her. How lovely she was, what a miracle.

She was screaming now.

He waited. Watched and waited because if he spoke he would raise his voice and if he did that, he'd be imitating his parents. He was not his father. He would not yell at her. He would be patient.

After about three minutes, her voice seemed to give out, and she stood their, panting, tears of frustration in her bright eyes. He knelt, touching her multi-coloured hair with light affection.

"You've got to take a bath now."

"No." A sniffle.

"Yes. We can stand here all night if you want to. But you'll have no time to play with your Uncle Kyle if we do."

"Un'le Kyle?"

"Yes."

"I go bath now."

He watched her walk down the hallway, as if she hadn't spent the last ten minutes throwing a tantrum. Watched as she turned the corner toward the bathroom. And then he punched the wall until his knuckles bled.

Not an easy thing, keeping his temper in check.

Journal Entry: Michael

Finally, the Bud's out of the house. It was good to see her interacting with others, after so long at home. She was, well, she was sick for awhile. I guess I just don't know how to care for kids that were once leafs. Kids that are part bat are easier, I guess. But that's over now. Now that I know what Tansi needs to be alright, I can help her.

Sunlight, vitamins, no meat. Not so hard. Even if Earako loves meat, the bloodier the better. Figures the two princess would need two totally different diets. Cooking two meals every day is such a waste of time. And Earako and Tansi wouldn't dream of helping. Lithle's got it right, got hers trained to take care of themselves. Two makes it hard. Still, at least now she's as happy as she was when I first got her. She's blooming.

God that sounds cheesy. What do these brats do to me?

But what else am I supposed to do? If I don't protect them, the world wins. I think it has, some, already. Earako is not what she once was. I look at Tansi, and I see the trust, and the innocence that Earako's losing touch with. Is it wrong to see her as a chance to do better?

Nothings wrong with Earako, I don't mean that. But she's... hurt. I think. I don't know how to ask her. She's been that way awhile. Maybe it happens to everyone. We all stop trusting.

Tansi still thinks the world is hers.

And I want her too. Maybe I wish she was still fragile, stuck inside. Nothing can hurt her there.

Still, how she smiles in the sun. I wouldn't miss it.

Journal Entry: Tansi
(Transcribed and edited by Earako)

I like dancing. I like my sissy's dragon, Vimber. I like Dad, too. I'm bad, then he yells. But I'm good, and he smiles, smiles, smiles.

Jane she takes care of me. She yells too.

Earako yells.

I think I should yell. Or not be bad.

I like to wear pretty things. Earako makes me pretty dresses. She's nice. But yells.

I do not yell!

Nice too, I said. Everyone nice. But yelling too. Both.

Mostly just at me. I think I must be bad. But I think I am super nice, smart, and pretty. That's what Da' says, when he isn't calling me brat.

Tucked in with the normal mail is a slim, floral-scented envelope stamped with the Project logo. It's from Shouko!

The Letter
Hi, Tansi!

Your big sister's got a dragon - do you ever wish you had a pet of your own? Pets are a big responsibility, but you're getting to be such a big girl! I bet with a little help you could handle one! Having a pet is such a rewarding experience, so I'd hate for you to miss out on it. Why don't you ask your daddy about getting you a little something to love?

Love, Shouko

Growth quest! Tansi needs to learn a lesson in responsibility! This quest should be between 2 and 6 posts of around 400 words each. Notify Silverah when you're finished!

Getting the Mail
Quest: Part 1

Tansi was sitting in the living room, playing with a pile of sparkling beads that her sister had allowed her to have. Daddy wasn't home, he was doing whatever it was that Daddy's did when they weren't paying attention to her. And really, the young passion flower girl couldn't even begin to conceive of anything that might be a legitimate reason for such neglect.

But she was okay. She had her pile of bright beads, and a string to string them on. She had music playing from somewhere, bright carnival music, and she had Vimber, curled up on the rug, almost too big for the house now. Daddy wasn't happy about that either, but Earako only lowered her head and look guilty whenever he brought it up.

And then he looked sad too, and shook his head, and said of course the dragon didn't have to sleep outside, even if there was a perfectly nice cave for it out there. And sometimes Vimber said things too. Dragons could talk, it was just that Vimber didn't talk very often to anyone but Earako.

So, she was sitting. And bead stringing, with Daddy away and Vimber on the rug. Earako was mostly in her room, but as Tansi struggled to get a sparkling blue bead onto the string her pale older sister walked out into the living room, out the front door, and returned with the mail.

"Oh, I had hoped it'd come today." She said, as she walked back in, a pile full of envelopes in her hand.

"Wha's comin'?" Tansi asked, hoping that it was more brightly colored beads, or maybe pretty fabrics that would be turned into a dress for her.

"Nothing important. But look Tansi. You got a letter."

Tansi immediately perked up at the prospect of mail, and forgetting about her beads, ran to her sister's side, anxious to see. It was an envelope that smelled of flowers with words on it that she couldn't read.

"Wha's it say?!" She demanded, stamping her foot a bit and frowning upward.

"It's... well, a suggestion, I guess." Earako patted her head absently, which she hated because she hated being treated absently, then read the letter outloud.

"I get a pet!" Tansi was overjoyed.

"It doesn't say that, Lady Tansi." The nickname made the flower girl smile, and forgive any absent head pattings. "You're gonna have to talk to Dad."

"Dad says yes." Tansi said, decisively, taking the letter out of Earako's hand despite her inability to read it.

Earako frowned, and looked at the dragon curled up in half the living room. "Yes, I guess he usually does."

I Want That One

Quest: Part 2

Tansi trotted down the street, hand and hand with her cousin Savius. It hadn't been hard to talk Daddy into letting her get a pet, the letter had helped, and Earako had been on her side. Of course, he had grumbled, but Daddy wasn't very good at grumbling. Cuz he loved her.

Because she was great. And pretty. And nice.

Savius had said he would take her because he had used to live at a petshop, or something. So that's where they were going. Birdcage. He said she wasn't allowed to get a bird though. Something about... well... she hadn't really understood that part. Anyway, she didn't really want a bird. She wanted something she could cuddle. And Savius said the birds at Birdcage weren't very cuddly.

At the door of Birdcage, Savius scooped her up into his arms and held her. She giggled, giddy and leaned her head against his chest.

"Alright bratlet, best behavior. I got some friends here, and I don't want you causing any trouble?"

"I don cause twouble." She objected, pouting up at him, but not too much. Savius was Aunt Lithle's, so he wasn't very easy to impress.

"Sure you don't." He squeezed her and set her back on her feet once they entered, and grinned at the shopkeeper, a man with bright colored hair. "Lil sis here needs, a pet."

"'m no' your sis'er." She objected, but he just squeezed her shoulder.

"Go look at the kittens, brat. I've got some catching up to do."

She didn't like to be ignored, but the shop was full of things to see, and maybe it smelled a little funny like birds and cats and dogs all at the same time.

She wandered to the side, pressing her face up against the glass and admired the kittens tumbling over each other behind the glass. There was a big floofy black kitten, and a tiny little orange one, and they were wrestling like Savius did with his dog Fen.

Wait! What if she wanted a dog?

She rushed over to look at the puppies. There was a small, wiggly white one, and she thought she could dress it all up in little bows and tiny sweaters and walk with it and everyone would look at them, because they'd match.

But she'd need the cutest of all the puppies, and they were all so adorable. There was a brown pug with it's wrinkly little nose. There was a dalmatian puppy with big feet licking the glass.

And then, she looked over her shoulder, she saw bunnies. She could even reach down and stroke their fluffy backs, as they hopped nervously away from her fingers. They had twitchy little noses, and she tried, and failed, to wiggle her own.

It took hours, and at the end, Savius and the man behind the counter had left and returned with sandwiches.

She got a puppy, because the puppies were the ones that pranced anxiously for her attention when she got close to them. And of all the puppies, she picked out a tiny little maltese with a happy face and a little pink tongue that just barely poked out of her mouth. She had lots of fur for bows and stuff.

"So," Savius asked, as he walked them back home, holding her and the puppy both. "What you going to call it?"

"She's gonna be Angel. And I'm gonna bwush her hair and give'er bows and take'er for walks and we're gonna be friends."

Always And Always
Quest: Part Three

"Daddy! Daddy! DADDY!" Tansi wiggled in her Savius's grip as they neared the house, her twisting and kicking making her look not much different in motion from the excited puppy he held under his other arm.

"DADDY!" Her high voice would have caught his attention even if he hadn't been sitting near a window where he'd been able to watch their approach. Had he been the one holding his daughter, she would have been set down by now, but Savius seemed almost unaware of her squirming, he simply made his way up the walk, and kicked the door roughly when he didn't have a hand to knock with. There was a large plastic bag in the hand holding the puppy, and Michael was left wondering why he hadn't grabbed a carrier.

Standing, he sauntered over to the door and let Lithle's son, his daughter, and the dog inside.

Oh god. Vimber was going to eat that thing within the week. Then what? What the hell were they going to do then?

"It's... small." He said to Savius as the teen set down both girl and dog just within the entryway. Tansi squealed and picked up the puppy immediately, to the creatures tail wagging delight.

"Daddy, look! Daddy! She's Angel! My puppy! I'm gonna ta'e cawe of her!" She gave him an almost defiant look, as if he might take that privilege away from her.

"You can start by setting up her food and water in the kitchen, little girl. And don't let her near Vimber!"

"She gonna be fweinds with Vimba!" Tansi said pointedly, but she rushed to the kitchen, arms full of squirming puppy, then rushed back after realizing she'd forgotten the bag of supplies.

"Why a dog?" He asked Savius.

The boy shrugged in his mild way. "Cats weren't paying enough attention to her."

"Of course." He shook his head. "I'm gonna be cleaning up after it within the week.

"Dunno. She seems pretty into it. Heard about obedience classes. Wants to take her."

"Heh, think they can train HER to obey?"

Savius just gave one of his almost grins. "That's your problem man. I gotta get going."

"Thanks for taking her." Michael said, to his retreating form.

"DADDY!" Tansi called from the kitchen. "Come look. I gots 'er a colla'. And its gots spakles!"

It did have sparkles. And it was pink. Michael shook his head. What was wrong with his children? He never meant to raise such other girls. But Earako only thought about dresses, and now Tansi had a dog of perfect punting size, and a sparkly pink collar.

"You like 'er?" The little girl inquired, kneeling to fawn over the bouncing pile of fur at her feet.

"Yeah. She's just fine. You gonna take her to classes?"

"I'm gonna take 'er evewywhere. Always an' always."

After such a long day, you would think that Tansi would fall right asleep! Well, you'd be wrong. After bedtime she is seized by thirst and gets up numerous times for water before finally falling into a deep sleep.

In the morning, she's grown into a child!
