No. No no no no no.
Eva was pale, her eyes wide as she stared at the fallen body with the puddle of dark liquid seeping out around him. A few minutes ago, that young man had been laughing and joking and...and he had been alive, but now he was...
Her grip around the gun began to loosen, and it almost slipped out of her hand when the yell for the police jerked her out of her reverie. She wrapped her fingers tightly around the gun--careful to keeping her finger off of the trigger--as Reine grabbed her free hand and ran. Eva followed after her, but she said nothing, her expression completely blank.

The portal was only a few steps ahead of them, flickering a pale blue, just slightly betraying its location, and not a second too late as the phone simply ticked on:
"Deus Ex Gate Closure in ETA: 2:45 minutes"
Sirens were blaring now, behind them, and then audible shouts and screams. Eva and Reine could barely make out a voice saying "THEY THEY ARE" and then the sounds of gunshots firing at them. There was no turning back now.

It was there- the portal- the blue caught her eyes, and sprinting faster, while making sure Eva was following after her, Reine dashed into it, hoping for the best. There was no time for guilt- that would come later; all she could do now was make sure both she and Eva were safe. How were they even dodging these bullets? She had no idea- but the only thing that mattered was that they were.
Closing her eyes, Reine stepped in, falling to her knees on the cold, hard ground.
Around her, she could hear the sea- that was enough to tell her they were back at the lighthouse. Away from the commotion, she felt herself shutting down, but Eva's hand in hers brought her back to her senses.
"This mission isn't over," she said softly, pulling herself up. "We still have to report back."
Spencer. She could see his dorky smile in her mind, and remembered-- My name is Spencer Adams. Have you had your latte today?
In all honesty, Reine had never tried coffee. She wasn't sure she would ever be able to, now, without thinking of the boy. Quickening her step, Reine made sure to keep ahead of Eva, if just so the other girl couldn't see her crying; she couldn't even imagine how Eva might be feeling- she'd been the one who shot him, after all. They were in this together..
Taking a deep breath, Reine stopped, and turned to wait for her friend, holding her hand out again. This time she wouldn't let go.

The shots that rang out around there was enough to snap Eva out of her stupor, if only briefly. As terrible as she was feeling right now, she had absolutely no intention of dying--at least, not now, and not like this. She sprinted after Reine, the gun still clutched tightly in her hand. Can't leave the murder weapon behind after all.
The thought made her shudder. Murder. She was a murderer now.
She said nothing when they arrived back, safe and sound at the lighthouse. A single nod was given at Reine's words--she was right, they weren't finished yet--and she started forward, silent as she trailed after her friend. Her expression was blank, devoid of emotion until Reine suddenly turned around and took her hand again. Eva looked up at her in surprise, and then swallowed a lump that had formed into her throat. She gave her hand an appreciative squeeze and then nodded.
"Let's...go report."

The walk back from the portal was quiet, silent, punctuated only by each footstep the trainees took on the frosted grass towards the main Deus 'offices'. Was there still blood staining their hands? It was hard to tell.
The Death Hunter was not exactly waiting, per se, but simply there as he worked from the table-turned-deskspace. The awkward, grim presence of the two returning trainees did not bother him one bit as he dotted his eyes, crossed his t's, raising one hand towards the two, sans eye contact. "I would like my Suppression Artifact returned to me."
Nothing about the mission or what happened, just a simple request.

"I would like my Suppression Artifact returned to me."
That was it? No questions, no explanations...he just wanted his damn gun back? Her fingers stayed tightly curled around the object, and she made no move to hand it over. No, she was not leaving this room without some kind of answer.
"Sir," Her voice was strained, and Reine probably would have felt Eva's hand tightening slightly around hers, "What was it exactly that this Spencer Adams did to deserve being...'suppressed'?" While she was absolutely horrified at herself for having pulled that trigger--for having killed, from what she knew, an innocent kid working at a coffee shop--she was also desperate to learn that they hadn't been ordered to kill him for no reason. Maybe Spencer had done something really wrong, or maybe...maybe this gun wasn't the suppression artifact and they had in fact been given the wrong thing.
Surely Caelius wouldn't have let them fire at an innocent person.

Ultimately what she supposed they wanted was some sense of closure, or some sort of purpose that would help them tide over the feelings of guilt. Now the mission was- for all intents and purposes- over and done with, the doubts were beginning to surface- why had they done that? Why shoot him? Why had getting back to the island been so important?
What could Caelius have done, had they chosen to disobey orders and let the gate close without shooting Spencer? In the first place, the division leader had withdrawn what she considered important information from them.
A chill ran down her spine as Evie gripped her hand tighter, and she tried to return the gesture, making sure- making sure Evie knew she was right beside her. She watched Caelius with what she hoped was a poker face, steeling herself for being thrown out of the room without any explanations given, if he chose to disregard Eva's question.

A few moments later, an empty-handed (literally) Death Hunter finally stopped reading and looked up at Eva. "I explained very clearly at the beginning of the mission the criteria: being willing to risk everything. You kindly answered my question with another question." His expression was the same as always, slightly annoyed, tone bordering on impatient. "So, trainee, even if I told you what you are looking for, would you believe me?"
The papers sifted as he went back to his work. "You want missions, you want answers. You go on these missions and want more answers, but fundamentally, miss out on why. The Death Division is focused on research and deduction, so here is your follow up mission: figure out yourself why you suppressed him. Now, I would still like my Artifact returned to me before you leave." Perhaps it was a saving grace that Caelius had ignored Reine entirely. END MISSION - REINE AND EVA BOTH GET + 2 rp points for this mission (this counts as a gm rp, you don't get +1 for 800 words, its just a flat out +2). Don't forget to also post the mission report so you can get your +3 rp points.

For now--and since she didn't really have any other choice--Eva would place trust in Caelius' decisions. There was no way that he would have sent them out to kill someone who was innocent--that was the complete opposite of what being a Hunter meant after all, right? They were trying to rid the world of the shadows--to protect humanity--so surely there had been something important about this mission and about Spencer. Something she was missing.
Or so she liked to believe, at least. She tried to push away the part of her that doubted, the part that was convinced their superior just sent them out to kill someone as a test to see if they could.
She took a deep breath to calm herself, her grip on Reine's hand relaxing slightly as she carefully set the "suppression artifact" on the desk. A follow up mission...yes, she would do exactly that. She needed to know what led up to this particular mission...if anything at all.
"...I understand. Thank you for your time, sir."

He'd sounded so irritated in his reply, Reine was scared for a moment that he was going to throw her against his bookshelf this time. There was definitely no cupboard in the room large enough for him to shove her into, which was a relief, at least. He wouldn't cut her into pieces with that scythe, would he---
Reine watched as Eva set the gun down; in that action, somehow, she felt some of the weight lifting off her shoulders. They were not responsible- Caelius was. Such a pathetic excuse.
"Thank you for your time, sir." She found herself echoing Eva and nodding at Caelius. Time to leave before he did anything to them.. like use the suppression artifact.
