"Heh. I kind of figure that nobody gets praise from Caelius. Well, maybe his weapon." At the comment about Jinhai, Jordan grinned outright. "So far, my observations on dragons include that they're smartasses, have egos as large as themselves or larger, and can sulk like champions."

I do not SULK, Ferros said, affronted, and subsided back into a growling mutter, thoughts too quiet for Jordan to quite make out what the weapon was thinking about without concentrating on listening.

"Exploding tiles?" Jordan's eyebrows went up. "I'm guessing you use a golem to do it, in that case."

"I'm not even sure Circe gets praise," said Gale, with another roll of his eyes. "Caelius doesn't even seem capable of giving praise, after all."

Pushing his hair back away from his face, Gale nodded. "Yeah, a Type C. It's one of those ones that looks like a misshapen clay doll. Not particularly attractive, nor appealing, but at least it keeps us from dying for real.

"Especially since the last time I tried it, I fell into a pit of lava. Not exactly fun, I might add."

Jordan's eyebrows elevated further. "Well, it wouldn't be a training course if it was pure luck," he reasoned. "So I'd guess it's for learning how to detect traps? Horrifying, deadly traps." That wasn't actually a surprise at all, now that he thought about it.

You don't get to hit anything? Lame, Ferros snipped.

"Hey, not getting caught in deathtraps sounds to me like a useful skill to develop," Jordan protested. "We can't solve every problem with brute force."

That's what you think.

"Yes, it is what I think," Jordan said, and snorted with amusement and irritation. "Ferros," he explained to Gale. "Thinking maybe I'll go give it a try. He annoys me, I annoy him back. It's a working relationship."

"It's got a lot to do with instinct, I suppose," said Gale, nodding. "You weren't in the room during the mission that I was in - we had a mission to use one of the creatures as bait, so to speak, and we set traps around the room. Unfortunately, the room...well, bucked, the traps went flying, and so did we. So we had no way of knowing where we would land. Not entirely the same situation here, but close."

<< That Caelius... >>

Actually, I'm pretty sure it was Doctor H's idea this time.

Golden brows rose. "Are you?" asked Gale interestedly. "Mind if I join you? I've been trying to get past the first two tiles without spontaneously erupting in fire, after all."

Jordan nodded. "My team landed in a room with freaks in it, and the floor was trapped as well. That place." He grimaced. He'd spent the past few days determinedly not thinking about the mission.

"Sure, I don't mind," he answered. "We can commiserate or congratulate one another afterwards. Lead on."

General Information
The large stone cavern with the tiled floor and large yellow smiley face is likely familiar to at least several trainees, and may even feature in a few nightmares from time to time. Welcome to Deathsweeper, the training course that may only be attempted via c-type golem, and often acts as a testing ground for the Life Division's more painful creations. Stealth and detecting imminent danger are vital for Death Hunters and anyone who has to spend extended amounts of time near Caelius. The Deathsweeper chamber is full of hidden traps that only the finest of survival instincts can survive unscathed.

If you fail: you get to once again relive the sensation of dying. Painfully and sometimes quite strangely.

If you win: you have survived stepping 5 tiles into the room. Anything further is purely for peen and bragging rights.

    Mechanics
  • roll 1 d10
  • check for hp loss and death
  • decide whether or not to use your bonuses
  • if you survive, repeat.
  • roll list: the traps are ICly constantly changing, so feel free to get creative as to what exactly those traps are!
  • -50% HP is off your full HP, so if you hit -50% twice, then you are 100% KO'd

    01. horrible death
    02. - 50% HP
    03. live

    05. - 50% HP

    08. - 50% HP
    09. live
    10. horrible death

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • All participants get a flag, this flag will allow your character to notice something about the area they're stepping into. OOCly this means you can adjust your rolled number, up or down, by one point. Instinctive moves are used in the same manner as flags. These are stackable, so if you have 1 flag + 1 instinctive move, you can use them up in order to adjust your roll by two.

(If you roll a 1, you may not move your number down to 0, -1, or 10. And 10 cannot be adjusted to 1 or 11.)

  • Trainees: 1 flag
  • Death Trainees: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Hunters: 1 flag + 1 instinctive move
  • Death Hunters: 1 flag + 2 instinctive moves

Getting into the golem pod was a tad unnerving still. Still, it was temporary, and he'd already stated that he was doing this. And Ferros's presence helped, even if the weapon was still intermittently snappish. Jordan sighed and tried to relax as the pod closed.

When he opened his eyes again, the initial disorientation of being in a golem swept over him. He stood still until it eased, taking the time to glance around the room he was now in. The smiley face was a surprise, and he snorted. Minesweeper, huh. The tiles looked innocuous enough.

He chose a tile and stepped forward. Nothing broke the stillness of the room, and he breathed out, only then realizing he'd been holding his breath.

Was that tile sunken slightly? Maybe fractionally so. Jordan stepped onto the tile to the left instead.

This one clicked and sank. Previously undetectable vents clicked open in the tile, and searing hot steam jetted up all around him before he had a chance to react. It hurt. A lot. He cursed under his breath.

Could we avoid doing that again? Ferros grumbled. You're not the only one who feels that pain, you know.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. If you have any further helpful suggestions, feel free to speak up.

The tile immediately ahead was definitely slightly sunken. Jordan took a careful look at the other two options he had. On the right ... he thought that that might be a pattern on it. Maybe. If it did, it was nearly invisible. He chose the left tile instead, bracing himself, and several seconds passed before he let himself relax. A little bit.

The tile straight ahead looked slightly cracked. The left one had what looked to be a rune of some kind scratched into its surface. The right one had a definite bloodstain. Well, crap.

Good one, Ferros said dryly.

The rune thing might be fake, Jordan said, without much hope. He stepped onto it.

It wasn't fake. The rune flared, and the tile became a solid pillar of fire from floor to ceiling. That hurt too.

When the pod opened, Jordan blinked at the light and sighed with relief. "Almost got it," he said, and chuckled ruefully.
