At first it was just Think Of Me which I had to sing in a graduation Choir in grade 5 but in Grade 8 There was this trip to Toronto to see the play and we spent months learning the background of The Phantom of the Opera we listin to the C.D every class learning what they ment. Then the big day came I saw the play I read the book on the way from the school to Toronto which is a 3 hour drive while listining to the back street boys redface anyways I got there and i was tacken back by the voice of the actor and everything that was involved that day I became a Phan I bought a cup and the C.d for myself all the way home I listened to it being drawn into the his Music of the Night. I listen to that C.D almost everyday since then and since I have digital cable I look for movie's that say POTO and watched many different virsion from the Orignally black and white that I had to read to the Virsion with the guy who play "Freddi Kergour" Can't spell the last name. But no matter which version I watched I missed the music! Then Came the movie that just was released with Gerald Butler. True many people like and some what hate it how Butler made the phantom attractive. But that movie since I borrowed it for a week had a power over me to watch everynight and I did 7 days everynight and not only that I was lisening to the CD if i was not watching it. I miss it to this day and it was just this Thursday i had to give it up. But my sister is reminding me that we will own it and I can watch it everyday till I'm sick of it! She hates how I feel about Mr.Butler but I don't care this is my first movie I've seen with him in it! and She just loves the songs me I love the hole movie! That is how I became a Phan!

Well, my stepmom is a voice instructor. Evr since I can remember, she has had a huge shelf of musicals. Beauty and the Beast, West side story, Phantom of the Opera.... She was always 'Rae, you should listen to some of this.' And I was: 'I hate opera...' (curse me now.....) And finally, she dragged me to see the movie(kicking and screaming), and I watched it. We both went to the mall afterwards for a few hours, and I snuck in and watched it again sweatdrop ...

Yeah.. Don't hate me.. I'm a recently converted phan. Have the original cast recording, have the DVD, have the Leroux book, and have the HB on Susan Kay's book on e-bay. So, I guess it's an obsession... Sorry if I'm not an 'oldbie'. I try. But I'm not a naive little noobie. I know my stuff. 3nodding

I understand, the book was published in the late 1800s. I can't understand much either!

I was a sophomore in high school and my school band was going to the Festival of Music in NY. Mostly it was just an excuse to go to NY. Anyway, they were all like, "Okay, this one night we're gonna go see a musical on Broadway" I remember thinking I'd rather skip it and go look around/go shopping... anyway, "Its the Phantom of the Opera." (I got to see Hugh Panaro ^^)

We went to see it--sat at the very top--and I just fell in love with it. We got back and for awhile I was the only phan. Not a single other person has read the book. I bought The Book, the Highlights CD, bought the Lon Chaney version ((my town sucks...I couldn't rent it anywhere! I had to buy it in a pack of 50 classic horror films. Which is cool...I watch the other movies too, but still...sucky Lafayette)) Borrowed the 1968 version from a friend, bought Kay's Phantom, got tickets to see in it Baton Rouge for my birthday...Needless to say, I've been a phan ever since.

To be truly honest I just became an obssessed phan this year... what else is suprising is that I never knew the actual storyline to it! The first time I actually knew about something to do with Poto was while watching Gremlins 2! (refers to the scene with disoriented faced Gremlin playing the organ) I asked my bro what that was all about and all he replied was there was a deformed man living under an opera house gonk Then came to our school's English week, and the theme was musicals (play only a part of it) they did Cats and Poto (but I don't remember them doing it! gonk )

But since the 2004 movie came out, I became crazy! From the first time I heard the dramatic overture I feel in love heart The music was eerie yet classical and gave me chills all over... After watching the movie I wanted to watch it again, but no one would go with me (no money) so I settled with downloading the music and well the crazy- ness just increases xd The sad thing is that I don't have fellow other phans (except my cousin) to go crazy with, all my friends think I'm obssessed crying

The series of events went like this for me:

1. Movie on its opening day in December. I decide to go with my friends at the last minute, and they were nice enough to pick me up and put up with me asking stupid questions. You see, I'd never heard of Phantom before, because while my sister is an actress, she has this thing against ALW. Anyway, saw the movie, and got interested.
2. Bought the movie soundtrack.
3. Bought the original novel and the 2-disc version. Loved both.
4. Borrowed every published fanfiction from the library that I possibly could, and then found a couple others to read for free online. Didn't like them as much, but liked seeing how people saw Erik as a character.
5. Started writing phanphiction of my own.

Funnily enough, my friends knew about Phantom before I did, and had even seen the live show. Only they didn't ever ask a certain question that I wanted to know right after I saw the movie: "What's his real name?" So I wound up finding that out before they did. 3nodding

Alright, >.< I became a phan earlier this year. My mom had bought the 2004 Phantom of the Opera movie, and had decided to watch it at night. Of course, I'm on the computer as usual, and at first decide, 'Bleh, don't want to watch movie.' Though, as it started up I couldn't help but look up and watch. Of course, I loved the movie, and decided to read the book. And that's about it. ^^''

Alexis Of Shadow
So what did you hear about/see/read that made you become obsessed with PotO? Why do you like it so much? What is your story as a phan? I thought it would be fun to compare experiences. I'm infamous for doing this.

My first encounter was back when I was about seven or eight, and my mom was walking the dogs and I was bored so I turned on Wishbone and saw that episode and immediately became entranced with it. I remember feeling very sorry for Erik and wanting to be in the show myself. That was strange for me at that age because I had a weirdo fear of deformities, which makes me think that his deformity wasn't very bad at all, although I don't remember at all what he looked like.

And then later I had talked my mom into going to see Lord of the Rings with me (don't remember which one) because I had nobody else to go with then, and I saw the preview for PotO and I remembered my obsession with it and nearly freaked out but pretended not to know what it was about so that my mom would talk about it. It was funny, I said something that was very uncharacteristic of me, from what I can remember, it was something like "That looks like a weird movie...it looks like it's been made before...what's it about?" even though I never say stuff like that when I don't know what the movie's about. But somehow it worked and my mom wasn't suspicious. Meanwhile I planned to see it somehow. Now, except for my talking about the weirder versions of the movie that I excuse away as having heard about from a friend who's a horror movie buff (who is sorta based on a real friend of mine) as well as talking her into renting the DVD of the original Lon Chaney version because "I wanted to see what it was about", she knows nothing of my secret life as a phan. Although she does say that I "will become obsessed" when I see the Lon Chaney version. I was thinking "The little you know...."

Okay, I'll shut up before you all bash my head in, if you've even read down to this point gonk .
OMG!! I got into it with Wishbone too!! I was really little and it got me a little interested like lighting a small spark. Over the years it was just a small spark and I could care less. Then me and my friend went to see the movie and BAMM!!! The spark became a bonfire.

It was my friend who got me hooked on it. She kept saying "Hey! guess what? The Phantom's Sexy!" and I'm like Phantom?....of the Opera? and so we started a discussion about it and somehow she got me hooked on it.So she made me go buy the movie and book.

Well, it was my mom who first drew me into PTO, when I was young she always was playing the OLC version, and I really liked PTO and MOTN. I really got into it when I got older, and bought the highlights (I really love the original London cast). I saw the movie with my friends, and of course I own the movie, the movie soundtrack, and the original soundtrack!! I LOVE PTO!!
