Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Basically trauma is relived- and for victims of hate crimes- slurs are often triggers, they make them relive the trauma and abuse. If it was just a matter of "Sticks and stones may break my bones" or people choosing to be offended- slurs wouldn't trigger people. But language and the human mind are more complicated than that.

Shiver` Hey guys I'm hoping you all can help. I just got an assignment to create a poster about a social issue that we can take a stand on. I picked gays in the military. I'm in the Army and with the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy I figured this would be a perfect subject. Now I'm running ideas though my head and would like to know if a poster like this would offend anyone. Can you spot the f**? *images of solders* Yeah neither can we. However the word f** I find offensive myself. I don't know why but it has that negative connotation attached. But I do feel that it would shock the viewer into playing attention to my poster. However I do not want to offend anyone. Would the word upset the gay/lesbian community to the point that they won't focus on the positive message of the poster? Do you find it offensive? I have 3 weeks to work on the project and have time to change it since I'm in the initial idea phase. So any feedback would be appreciated. 3nodding I should mention I'm in America so it does not mean cigarette here. xd edit: Just a heads up in case you don't read the rest of the post on this page. I am not planning on using that word and going with another idea. Same subject just different concept. wink f** is an abbreviation for the word f*****t, which by definition is a bundle of sticks. Why people take/use this as an insult I have no clue. Homosexual would be more appropriate for your poster.

At least to the DADT end... but I think as an overall idea, I like the concept (Just maybe worded differently), seems like it would be a good poster.

Just like states where gay marriage is legal its still conversational / touchy subject. Though DODT policy revoked there are issues that are being brought up like barrack arrangements and showers. We had tons of death by power points in my unit over this subject. And many straight soldier don't feel comfortable with showering with a openly gay guys cause they will stare at their d**k or try to have sex with them on guard duty or something silly like that. **just like all females want them... lol the male ego. **There is still a lot of homophobic people out there and this poster is meant to say 'who cares if their gay, they are still soldiers'.

snowleopard_1116 f** is an abbreviation for the word f*****t, which by definition is a bundle of sticks. Why people take/use this as an insult I have no clue. Homosexual would be more appropriate for your poster. You're right, the word f** DID come from f*****t, however, if you know your epistemology, the insult is pretty evident. From a pile of sticks, it started meaning the people who's job it was to carry/transport them for peoples fires. It then took on a meaning that was akin to 'useless', as these people were usually thought of as all brawn and no brains, essentially useless to society. From the connotation of being useless to society, it started meaning elderly. Particularly in reference to elderly women. Then, as with all things, religion took it's hold, and it started meaning witches, as they were generally older women, and were burned on a f*****t. And who else do they burn on faggots? Why, gay guys, of course! So yeah... it's a word with a rather nasty history.

If you are openly gay yourself, then it may be acceptable. Straight people using the F word (and no, I don't mean "********") is like white people using the N word. If you yourself are gay, then it changes things significantly, but me having a view on gay people using that word would be like me having an opinion on blacks using the N word... In other words, just silly. Moreover, you know DADT was eliminated, right?

I hate that word. Its rude and disrespectful. and when a teacher gives an assignment and everyones says "oh thats gay." Im sorry but the homework has no sexual preference and since when is it cool for someone to use a sexuality to slander something. Just because you hate gays you can call everything you hate gay just because you hate gays. Just pisses me off. There are other ways to express your dislike, or just shut up.

I don't find the word offensive at all myself. I tend to use it jokingly to my straight friends, I am not the only gay person in our group to do so.
All the words got very ineffective after a while for me so now I gladly use them myself.

I find the word offensive but I'm usually ok if someone is using it from a reason like to make a point with.
Some people say that intent makes a word what is it other says its just the word itself. It varies on how people think of it. I've started to wonder about the history of the word and if that makes it worse or better.

I would know. My God-mother came here from England to visit us, mother's best friend since I am an army brat, and kept trying to bum 'fags' off my dad who smoked. Lol.

Always glad to give a lesson in etymology. Ahh yes. I assume that colloquial usage came from the wood pile usage, perhaps around when smoking was associated with homosexuality?
