The Anesthesia

Pectolath lightly nuzzled his sister, not in an overly affectionate way. She nuzzled him first and therefore he needed to reciprocate. Social politics, instinct and all that. It could be exhausting at times, the Touching wore him down even inside his own egg, but he did genuinely care about Pyth and knew the importance of showing it with simple gestures. ”I understand, Mine is also nervous. He just has a different way of showing it.”

Winderick stared. He could hardly believe his ears yet there she stood looking at him in complete seriousness. “That’s going a bit far,” he whispered, clearly offended. Even though he didn’t know Kestril personally and even though he came from a cothold outside Benden Hold, now that he was a Benden rider he felt a powerful allegiance to his weyr (and not just because he was still swept up in emotion). “I don’t think Benden is perfect either, but you should show more respect. It’s not right to speak badly about someone who’s just passed away.” He tried to change the subject: “Anyway, as for my name, I haven’t decided yet. If I do change it it’ll be because I want to and not because of tradition.”

Sensing his rider’s displeasure, Pectolath sighed. ”Perhaps now would be a good time…” He looked around and quickly spotted his blue brother Zurith. Excusing himself for a moment, Pectolath bounded up to greet his brother while Winderick stayed at the table. Although he seemed not to notice His constantly running off without him he was actually well aware of Pectolath at all times. If Pectolath went too far he would have become nervous, but until then he seemed content to give his dragon freedom.

”Greetings Zurith!” Pectolath paused to warble at F’law. Speaking to Zurith, he continued, ”Are you and Your’s well? Your’s may sit with Mine, if you like. Pyth and Her’s are here, too.”

"No problem." Dezima assured her friend. "'sides, not like I have any family members to look for anyways. So I can put all my effort into helping you!" She nudged her friend playfully while keeping an eye out for Brynja's family, but gave their newest arrival most of her attention now.

Where Larth showed himself off in subtle ways, Microth was just happy to greet Gneisth. That is good to hear! Have you met your barrack mates? Larth and His are ours.. The green giggled a little at this. Larth was very funny to share living space with. And Hers was happy to be paired up with His. It all worked out so nicely! I slept well. And haven't tried it yet. Is it good? Have you tried it? She blinked blue eyes at the brown, glancing back towards Hers once, as if making sure she was still there (though she knew she was without looking) and let her gaze dart around to the others around them before returning her attention to Gneisth.

Dezima nodded towards B'nen. "Nope. Never formally. Though I'm preeetty sure I've seen you around the Weyr. Are you weyrborn?" There were so many people she had seen since she was only able to walk that it was very possible that B'nen was someone she'd grown up around yet not managed to actually meet him. "Hello to you, Gneisth." Dezima added politely to the brown when he was introduced by his rider. Mention that his brother was Impressed to bronze Stromath was dually noted. But the fact they were twins! Dezima giggled. "Oh! I will certainly do my best to try and tell you two apart. Unless you try to confuse us on purpose. That's pretty awesome you two Impressed together!" And in a clutch with twin golds, no less! It really was quite amusing.

The Anesthesia

F'law was strolling along casually between the tables after leaving his father. He quietly watched the other pairs interacting. The dragons seemed to be in good spirits. He had to halt suddenly when a blue came bounding up to them. It surprised him that the dragon was without company. Curiously he glanced at Zurith. When the blue hummed, F'law gave a smile and a nod. "A pleasure to meet you too." At least that's what he thought the dragonette had said.

Hello Pectolath. Mine this is Pectolath. Zurith filled in his clutch-mate's name for his rider. We are very well. Thank you for asking. Is Yours doing good? Mine has fed me, and is getting something to eat himself. The dark blue nodded to himself as if making up his mind.

I will get Mine to bring food over for Yours and Pyth's. They can share and chat. Do you know what they will like Zurith turned his head up to his rider. Mine, Pectolath has offered for us to sit with him, Pyth, and Theirs. Since you are getting food, it would be rude not to offer some.

F'law was a bit surprised when the blue agreed to join the other pair. Still it was just two other people and two dragons. That wasn't too bad. He nodded, "what would they like?"

Pectolath promptly relayed the message back to Winderick and Pyth. ”My brother Zurith and His F'law are coming to sit with us. They have graciously offered to bring food for Ours. Pyth, what would Your's like? Is there anything you would like, Winderickmine?” He felt proud of Pyth, Zurith and himself, the three of them already working as a team to help their riders.

A bit surprised by the sudden addition of another rider, Winderick looked over his shoulder, forgetting Persephone's remark in the confusion. He studied F'law for a moment and looked at the plate in his hand. Since he had been talking to Persephone the plate was still empty. He struggled for a moment. The offer was... well, he didn't know what to make of it exactly... it was nice, he supposed, but he wondered how F'law could carry three plates by himself. Winderick was planning on getting his own food anyway. "I don't want to put all the burden on him. I can carry my own food."

This bothered Pectolath. Winderick was already off to a rocky start with Pyth's rider and he didn't want F'law to get the wrong impression of him. He tilted his head this way and that, thinking hard. ”Perhaps... you could bring food for F'law?”

This fresh insight from his dragon startled him even more than the unexpected company. Winderick didn't normally do things for other people. His philosophy was to leave other people's business to other people, but he had to agree Pectolath's suggestion was fair. "Okay, that sounds reasonable. What does F'law want?"

Pectolath, his small head dizzy with new information, relayed the message back to Zurith. This was beginning to feel like a big responsibility. The blue stood up straight, determined to do a good job.

"Mine we are late already, this won't do at all, we're supposed to be the first ones there, along with Kheth and Her's.... You would look finer without messing around with your face so much" complained Suunath, she was not impressed that, after helping Kheth's pick a dress and get ready for the Feast, Kindra was still in front of the mirror, making sure her hair and clothes were just right. Kindra had chosen a lovely Gold dress with some intricate embroidery, this was one that she wore very rarely since it was so fancy but she knew tonight was the right occasion, not only was it a celebration but it was also a mourning for the departed Queen, the mother of every new hatchling that would be there that evening, plus the dress, while rather lovely, was muted and not overly bright and she didn't feel that it would be appropriate to wear something flashy. Finally she had decided her hair wasn't going to get any better the more she played with it so she decided to just put it in a simple braid that hung delicately down her back, trying it off with a black ribbon. Brushing her hands down her dress as she stood she turned to Suunath and smiled "Well, how do i look?"

"Like a pile of Wherry dung" said the Gold with an amused tone in the emotion she sent towards Kindra "You look fine, not as fine as me but you'll do now can we GO already" she said, already moving towards the corridor that led from their Weyr, shed complained about this, that she was seperated from Kheth but, in an effort to befriend the girl Kindra had offered her weyr anytime Isley needed it, or if Kheth just wanted to come and spend time with Suunath, shed told her that she didn't need to ask .... though a polite knock would be nice first in case she was busy. She had to admit, Oiling Suunath with someone... other than Suunath... to talk to made the task seem to go faster than oiling her on her own.

Entering the doorway Kindra eyed the Weyrleader W'lin, the man seemed a stoic reminder of their loss because there should have been the Weyrwoman beside him to greet the weyrlings. She stood proud in front of him and held her head high, "Weyrleader W'lin, I'm sorry for Kestril's loss but Suunath and me will do anything that's needed to assist out Weyr in this time of need, she might be young, and i too but i will not let Benden down" she stated proudly, but despite her words there was a flicker of uncertainty behind her eyes.

"We will be what the Weyr needs, me and Kheth will take our place, we need to work hard and prove ourselves first though Mine, do not promise what you cannot deliver on, remember that" reprimanded Suunath but she leaned against Kindra, wrinkling her dress a little at the side which Kindra unconciously smoothed.

once Kindra received her Knots she searched the room for Isley or anyone she was on good terms with, one or two of them she either didn't bother to get to know or just dismissed them as unimportant before, she supposed she had better at least talk to most of them even if she didn't befriend them.

The half chewed morsel that she tucked into her cheek was all but forgotten when Winderick bristled. Oh she had done it again hadn’t she? She had never been the best at expressing herself adequately with words, she always, was misinterpreted regardless of how hard she attempted to structure her sentence. She hadn’t been speaking badly of anyone! She hasn’t! Tears instantly began to well up at the corners of her eyes and clung to her long black eyelashes however Persephone made sure that she didn’t allow herself to make any noises whatsoever, she was overreacting and she knew it. Adjusting her waist so that her back fully faced the junior weyrling the shorthaired brunette exhaled softly and found herself falling mute.

‘Pactolath, yours has upset mine--- Please excuse me,’ stepping away from her clutch-sibling Pyrth exhaled in a snort when she passed Winderick, wrapping her tail around the slender girl the green crooned softly towards hers in the most comforting way possible. ‘Persimine, dry your tears you need to smile and be at your very best! Look another one of my brothers wishes to join us mine, His ask what you would like to eat. He shall bring it for you, like a gentlemen.’

Shielding her bright green hues against Pyrth’s neck Persephone murmured something akin to gibberish into her freshly oiled hide, however her mind state her garbled words perfectly. Bejeweled blue eyes swirled for a few moments as she nuzzled and rubbed her snout against that of the small figured girl in effort to comfort her, she already was so apprehensive about going to the Feast and now she had gone and grown upset, so far she was off to a very rough start.

‘Zurith-brother, Mine states that anything that yours wishes to bring would be welcome, she is not picky. We shall make ready a spot for all of us to be seated and comfortable at. Isn’t that right Persimine?’ Pyrth commented then nudged her lifemate in the side as if trying to motivate her into doing the helpful task. Rubbing at her already swelling eyes Persephone nodded in compliance and quickly spun on her heels, there were still plenty of spots open. A bright grin slowly spread across her face as she set to work claiming three seats for her and her fellow riders.

"I'm pleased to meet you - and oh, wow" Brynja grinned, just as happy to be excited by this as by everything else. "I knew these twins once - back home, 'course - that did that trick. It was pretty impressive, specially 'cause this one time..." (pause for effect) "This one time, they played this dreadful trick on my brother, pretendin' to be each other. It was hilarious, watching him run 'round the hold, trying to find the other one of the pair - he was at it for nearly an hour 'fore he twigged what was going on. Worse when he fell for it again a sevenday later. He got 'em back good, though" This wasn't entirely true - he'd caught on a lot sooner - but eh, it made a good story. "It must be the best, having your brother with you - are you two barrack mates or did you end up with someone else?"

Larth told her, sounding more amused then anything else. little more dignified? First impressions are important>

I'm sorry for being excited. I'll try and tone it down>

He teased (although he was half-serious), before turning his attention back on Microth and Gneisth, eyes a bright green. He then realised that maybe this was a bit much of a barrage of questions, between himself and Microth, and swallowed the other questions he had for Gneisth - Brynja's excitement was somewhat infectious.

Winderick paid little attention to Persephone. Even if he wasn’t distracted by his mental conversation with Pectolath he wouldn’t have known how to help her. Emotional people made him uneasy, they weren’t rational. If he tried to say something to her, no matter how good his intentions, it could just as easily backfire and make her more upset than before. Better just to wait until she calmed down. However, when Persephone started to leave he did look a bit concerned. Once Pectolath explained where they were going he felt relieved. He didn’t think his remark was something to get upset over. He had scolded her but it didn’t seem like a big deal to him. Someone has to set a good example. He looked up at F’law and waved, ready to get food for him as soon as Pectolath told him what he wanted. The whole arrangement seemed a bit silly to him but he was willing to go along with it anyway.

Zurith nodded at Pyrth's reply. Mine no one is picky. We should get a selection to take over to be tried. Pectolath, thank Yours for getting Mine's food. A selection of different stuff will do. If they like something we can always go back and get more. The dark blue watched as His made up a couple plates with small sample piles set around. Get some of that green stuff there too Mine.

Once the plates were full, Zurith waddled over to the table to greet his green and blue siblings. I heard you have bunkmates. How is it? His blue eyes whirled slowly as he observed the other dragonettes.

F'law gave a small, mock-suffering sigh. He was an ex-miner, now rider, not a drudge. It would have been rude to refuse after Zurith made the offer. Just this once he would do this, and after like Zurith said they could get it themselves. He was glad he made that choice when Winderick came over to help bring another plate. "I haven't gotten anything from the dishes on the far end of the table. Don't think we've met. I'm F'law, formerly Falawny. Thanks for helping."

With his plates full, he waited for Winderick so they could walk back together. Once the other rider was ready, he followed Zurith over to the table they were using. "Hello," he greeted the greenrider as he set the plates down. For a moment he was confused how to relate to these other people. They weren't family. Did they count something more like classmates since they had all Impressed at the same clutch? Then there was the older dragons and their riders to consider. It was confusing all at once. Maybe with time things would sort themselves out.

When the last of the Weyrlings filtered in and the group had been assembled, the Weyrleader stepped inside and set the knot board on a side table. Watching the youths mingle and get to know each other made him smile, already noting the colour politics at work – the blues and greens mostly together, the metalics and browns together elsewhere. How quickly people fell into the traditions of the Weyr, regardless of their original lives.

Bemused, the man stepped up to take a glass of wine from the Head Table, currently filled with Wingleaders, and turned back to those assembled, tapping the side of his glass with a spoon as he cleared his throat. It was a surprisingly dainty gesture from the gruff and robust man but as soon as a few gazes turned to him, he spoke up, loud and commanding, like his dragon – it was not hard to see how the two had come to be a pair, “Good evening! Your attention. Attention here!” A brief pause followed in which he made eye contact with a few of the weyrlings, “Alright. I am W’lin, rider of Bronze Bruinth and Weyrleader of Benden. Due to the untimely and tragic death of the late Goldrider Kestril, I will be filling in for her for the time being.”

“First item on the docket is this: Because we no longer have a Weyrwoman, I will be taking up leadership of the Weyr as a Regent while our two fine young golds grow. That means I will be mentoring you,” he gestured to the two goldriders in the crowd, “until such a time as one of your Golds Rise to claim leadership. Benden is negotiating the transfer of another gold into our ranks but that will take some time – at least until we find the culprit from Malvren. Mine is the highest authority in the Weyr until otherwise noted.” The way he phrased it made it seem to be a temporary arrangement but a Weyrleader did not often find himself in the seat of absolute authority of a Weyr even so. W’lin was not so swift to give that up quite yet.

“Now, the main purpose of my standing here is to address the new Weyrlings. Your bonds are new, fresh, wondrous things. Do not prove yourself unworthy with stupidity and juvenile acts. You are dragonriders now, sworn to protect and serve Pern. They may be small now but your dragons, and you, are the fighters of our future – if you fall, who will ensure the safety of Pern? Think about that a moment,” He smiled as he reached behind himself and set the glass down and settled his arms, “Congratulations to every one of you. It is a great honour to stand among the riders, to take a place among our wings. To do that, hwoever, there are a few ground rules. One: No sex. Doing so will confuse your dragon prematurely and you will jeopardize the safety of yourself and your dragon. We all know what a dragon without rider is like… imagine a Rider without their dragon…. Imagine yourself without your lifemate.” He swept his gaze over those assembled, noting the general negative expressions, “It’s not a fate I would wish on even my greatest enemy. To avoid becoming one of those unfortunate souls, follow that rule: no sex until told otherwise. No alcohol until otherwise noted – and you shouldn’t be drinking excessively anyway. Follow the rules of the Weyr and you’ll go far. Don’t… and you’ll end up in places you don’t want to be. It’s as simple as that. We’ve lost Weyrlings before – don’t be one of them.”

“The Golds will train under me and I will be instructing classes as well, so expect to see me at a few of your lessons. Which, by the way, start tomorrow at Dawn. The Weyrling Master will see to it you get a good introduction on how to properly feed, oil, and care for your dragon. Chores also resume for all of your tomorrow, regardless of colour. Report to the Weyrbowl near the Wherry pens at dawn, dressed and ready to work. If you need anything at all, ask another rider or one of the Candidates, they will assist you. If there is something wrong with your Dragon, go to the Healers’ office immediately.” W’lin’s tendency to speak in lists made him seem both dry and efficient in his orders, perhaps a holdover from commanding the wings.

“Again, Congratulations to all those who Impressed! We expect much of you, the pride of Yirath. A toast.” He selected his glass again and held it aloft, “To riders and Benden’s future!” Sipping deeply, he let that be the end of his speech and a dismissal of attention, allowing for everyone to return to their activity.

The Anesthesia

”We have not seen much of them yet. I hope Mawsith will not be too rowdy. You do not have bunkmates?” Envy tinged his mental voice. At the end of the day Pectolath wanted nothing better than to unwind and for that he needed tranquility. Although he tolerated crowds more than his blue brother, too much social interaction still left him exhausted. That was why he chose Winderick. They needed their independence, both of them, and would never begrudge one another for it.

Winderick shrugged easily as if to say ‘No problem.’ While he was getting food for F’law he had been thinking about what his new name should be, if he even wanted one. He decided that if he was going to change his name he should keep it as similar to his birth name as possible. If it changed too much he knew he would never be comfortable with it. After some discussion with Pectolath he finally settled on a name he could live with. “I’m Winderick. I guess you can call me W’rick now. I spent a lot of time volunteering in the smithy, so that’s probably why you didn’t see me. Where are you from?”

Just as they set down W’lin went into his speech. W'rick paused to watch but quickly found himself zoning out. Only a few parts stuck out to him. No sex? No problem. He was a sharding expert at not having sex. The Weyrleader’s prohibition against alcohol was only slightly more disappointing. When W’lin finally finished his rant W'rick sighed, glad that was over.

A'in smiled amusingly as he heard that there was a no sex and alcohol in effect for them. It didn't matter to him, but he wondered if a prank could be pulled. His mind wandering and he missed some other stuff.

Mine, why are you thinking that? We shouldn't do that to them. After this can we...Oh we are being taught by the leader? I have an itch now and am hungry again. He turned towards Troiseth and smiled. "Well I guess the Weyrleader will be training us on some things. I wonder how the new queens are doing? Have you tried talking to them, I don't even know their names or Theirs. At least not really."

The newly Impressed green rider attempted to greet F’law with a bright smile though without even knowing it she hide behind her grape-stained hands rather sheepishly. It was then that W’lin demanded full attention be brought upon him, it was a rather welcome distraction, she didn’t even know why she was seated with boys anyhow they made her unsettled. Bright green eyes rolled once or twice as the man spoke, of course the golds would be getting special attention, that was reasonable but did they really have to start chores back so quickly? Blarg! Shaking her head Persephone found herself growing bored, it wasn’t until the Weyrleader mentioned celibacy that she nearly choked on whatever bit of food she had been eating.

NO SEX?!

That was unexpected, especially so bluntly worded. Pale cheeks brightened to the brightest shade of red that her pigment would allow, she hadn’t even thought about doing the deed until the man mentioned it. Where some of the junior weyrlings really already--- active? A shiver raced full tilt up and down her spine as she thought about--- that. It wasn’t as if she had any suitors, in fact the only girl that she had actually really spoken to was Analyssa and they didn’t exactly click that well. In fact she was fairly certain the other girl was rather annoyed by her very existence, the girl could probably sense her gayness radiating off of her like a double rainbow screaming ‘My name is Priss and I’m queer’, yeah that might have been what put Lyssa off, that or maybe it was just her existence. Either way Persephone wasn’t getting any. Especially from the other green rider. Sliding down into her seat the former wine-maker cleared her throat as the toast was made then washed the well-wishes down her tightened esophagus with a drink from her cup of Benden wine. The no alcohol rule clearly already forgotten, for a moment as she exhaled sharply through her nose the sandy haired brunette put everything behind her and decided right then and there, tonight was a new beginning---

Turning abruptly towards F’law and W’rick the slim figured girl flashed a rather coy grin then stood up, her hands fumbled and played at the edge of her fancy tunic and her feet instinctively tilted inward however her shoulders were squared and a light shimmered behind her eyes. “To each of my fellow junior werylings I would like to introduce myself, I am P'ne rider of Green Pyrth! We might not be much, but we will try our very best!” Raising her head the mentioned green trilled with delight at hers, yes they would try their very best and they would help each and every clutch-sibling! They would prove just how perfect a pair they truly were.

K'en and Stromath both turned their attention onto the Weyrleader as he tapped his glass and began to speak. It didn't surprise the teen that W'lin would be filling in for Kestril until one of the new goldriders could take her place. After all, he was the Weyrleader at the moment, so it only made sense.

And yes, their new bonds truly were wondrous things; K'en had no intention to do anything that would even remotely jeopardize that. Granted, he'd had no real 'plans' for sex in the foreseeable future anyway, but even if the opportunity were to arise he would not be so foolish as to risk the well-being of Stromath over it. He would also be sure to avoid drinking, as instructed. The directions being given them now were no light matter, and the new bronzerider fully intended to follow them.

Lessons were beginning at dawn though? Hm, it seemed they would need to make sure not to stay at this feast too late tonight then. Ready for your first full day of work, Stromath?

I am not concerned over the work. Together we will finish what needs to be done.

K'en couldn't help a small, fondly proud smile as he glanced down at his partner. He couldn't have asked for a more perfect dragon. Once the speech was over, he turned his attention back onto N'mol and K'har. "If you two will excuse us; Stromath is overdue for some feeding." It was a feast, after all, and while socializing with peers was important they should at least attempt to fill their bellies first. Especially since his dragon seemed rather disinclined to mention his hunger himself.

The food was not going anywhere.

Except into the bellies of other, perhaps, K'en thought back wryly, patting his dragon as he led him over to the meat table. He'd get his own food once Stromath was taken care of.

"Mine, i do not see Kheth yet, we should go and introduce you to Stromath's he is just over there and look, they are getting some food, i shall eat too i am hungry, you should also eat otherwise you will be fainting on me when you are oiling me" Commented Suunath, nudging Erie over towards the lad who was moving to the feeding tables.

"Mine, grab some food for Stromath's too, maybe he is making sure Stromath is fed first, this is good but he should eat too" noted the Gold smugly, before trotting over and rumbling a greeting to Stromath.

Kindra groaned, Suunath was ordering her about a lot but for once Kindra didn't mind, especially since the Gild made a lot of sense, Grabbing two platefuls of food, picking lots of different things in small portions, not sure of what the other rider liked. "Hi, I'm Kindra, Suunath you have already met it seems" she said, holding the spare plate out to the lad, eyeing Suunath who was nosing about the meat table before grabbing a large hunk down and settling to gnaw on it "Suunath!" reprimanded Kindra to which Suunath just seemed to grin and tear at the meat with more vigour, as if it was her right to pick the best before any others, but she didn't take more than she needed right then, leaving much for others, knowing that the tables would be replenished.
