Oh! There was another frog to go after!

Elvis spun around, his tail flying out carelessly but somehow not coming into contact with anyone else. Or, if it did, he was not conscious of it doing so. It was more noteworthy, as far as the young blue and white cub was concerned, that his tail seemed to be serving the exact opposite of its purpose: instead of helping him maintain his balance, the swinging threw him off-balance and he wound up sitting on his bum in the mud.

He squeaked with outrage at the turn of events that had brought him to this point and placed him in this predicament. He didn't blame his fellow competitors for his bad fortune, knowing that the blame rightfully lay with the spirits. Of course it was inconceivable that the fault might be his own. He was Elvis, a mighty hunter of frogs and fierce champion of justice and everything else that struck his fancy.

What did not strike his fancy was his failure in this event. He was the only one representing his family in these competitions, and he felt obligated to make a good showing. No, more than a good showing. A great showing. A fantastic showing. The sort of show that people would speak of for seasons to come.

((Maybe it's their small size and speed? Or (most) of their lack of embarrassment at slipping around in the mud, lol?))

Kati happily turned to face the next frog. She was trying not to get overconfident, knowing that would be her downfall if it happened. She again carefully but quickly stalked the frog, setting her aim before leaping at it. She flew towards the frog, she could tell she was going to get it...!

Instead, she landed just one paw step away, stumbling and tripping while trying to stay out of the mud this time. Darn it! She'd been so close! Instead, she saw the frog simply hop right to another lioness cub. The sight was just out of place amongst all the leaping and rolling Kati had to laugh. She smiled at the green girl, glad that things were still light hearted enough to have fun.

((To Phailin! btw, whatever my next day off is will be the last frog-day. I'll know tomorrow :3.

Since it's a 1, whoever's closest will win this one, since it's impossible to be under.))

Phailin looked down at something nudging itself inbetween her paws. What was this? She...she had caught one! Following what the other cubs were doing was a success! Clutched in between the soft pawpads, that green frog just squirmed. The young lioness could have squealed with delight, but she was in a competition, and that meant she had to catch up! Eyeing the next frog just to the left of her, she made a quick pounce. Here was hoping for good luck to hit her a second time.

((Man, every time I have a chance to check this, someone's landed ON the number within two posts xd ))

Starting to feel dismayed by his frog catching luck, Ubati watched as not only did Elvis catch two, but Kati and Phailin catching one each. He let out a huff, brow furrowing, before determination kicked back in. Shoving his gray hair out of his face with a muddy paw, he looked around, before stalking and jumping at another frog. Such slippery little amphibians!

Kati spotted the frog in spot that was awkward to get to. She tried her best to get to the frog without going past it, but it suddenly hopped right in her direction, and Kati scrambled past it. As she turned, she spotted the green girl again get it. Oh well, that had been a difficult one. She wondered how long the game would go on, but she wasn't too concerned. She was having a great time!

How many frogs would there be, Elvis wondered. He hadn't been counting before, but he knew he'd captured two so far, and one of the girls had caught two as well. He thought there might have been another girl who caught one, but...oh, it was too late now to worry about it. Just the same, Elvis couldn't help thinking about his chances and wondering how much better he would have to do if he wanted to win this event.

Unfortunately while he was thinking about it another frog appeared and he was late and slow in reacting to its appearance. This one was a crafty, tricky frog that was either a veteran of similar hunts or simply had very good instincts. Elvis and the others had to slither through the mud and sift through the squelchy stuff with their paws just to find it.

Unfortunately, Elvis was only close enough to scare it out of hiding, and nowhere near fast enough once he had done so to capture it. A girl got it. He couldn't remember if she had already caught one. There didn't seem to be a lot of boys competing in this event, and it occurred to him that there might be a reason for that. Perhaps girls were just better suited to hunting.

Nah. That was silly.

Another one! She had managed to catch another one of those slimy frogs! Now, if only she could continue this streak, she'd win for sure! Once the young cub saw another frog pop up, she made a launch. It probably wasn't the most graceful of actions, but with excitement filling her mind, she wasn't exactly thinking straight to begin with.

Kati looked around cautiously, spotting the next frog. She circumvented other competitors, scampering here and there until she got a good vantage point in a rotted tree. She waited and watched, hidden, for the right moment. Then, aiming, she gave a forceful leap towards the frog.

Elvis dismissed his thoughts on the matter of whether females were better-suited to hunting frogs than males. That was ridiculous. Menfolk were better at everything. They were bigger and stronger and faster, and he'd prove it by catching a third frog, and then a fourth, and then all the rest of the frogs. It was doable!

His family would be so proud, too, knowing that he was the finest frog-catcher in the pride. Though there was no reason for them not to be proud otherwise. He was still the finest cub in the pride, and the best at everything. If he didn't win today, it was simply because he was having an off day. It could happen to anyone. Elvis knew he was superior no matter what.

Another frog appeared and he jumped after it, paying no mind to the other two cubs who were jumping for exactly the same spot. The possibility of a collision did not occur to him. He was going to win this, even if it gave him a concussion or worse!

Was it over? Was that it? Who had won?

Elvis was tired, but not so tired that he didn't immediately begin questioning these things. Which of them had caught the most frogs? Had it been him? He knew he'd caught a lot of frogs, but he hadn't caught all of them, which had been his original plan.

As he waited for the results to be announced Elvis eyed the other cubs and juveniles he had competed against. There was that one girl cub who had done really well. He supposed he ought to go congratulate her, but that would have to wait until the end of the day. He still had the races coming up and with them came the chance to redeem himself for not catching all the frogs in this event.

His concerns seemed to have been unfounded, however, for he and Kati were declared the winners. Elvis supposed he could live with having tied for the win in this, as long as he won the race by a lot.
