"I've never seen water like this before", said Buzz."I wonder where it came from." His legs weren't long like Rainbow's, so he couldn't reach his paw down far enough to put it in the water. He was content to just lie there and watch it flow by. Leaves and small twigs floated past them as he watched them swirl around in the fast moving current. It wouldn't do to fall in here he thought. He rolled over on his back, and twisted from side to side, scratching his back on the grass. It felt so good to not be couped up in the small room he had been in before the human female had taken him and Pastel home with her. Turning to Rainbow he asked, "So what do you know about the humans?"

Buzz listened as Rainbow talked about the humans, but his last statement caught his undivided attention. "Why is that cool? Aren't there other guys with wings where you come from? Were you born without wings, or did you lose them?"

Buzz twitched his wings. He'd never really given much thought to them. Pastel had wings too, but now that he thought about it, Skye didn't have wings, but Holly did. They were the other two kits that lived with them before the human came to take them away. Thinking about them, he wondered if some other human would come and take them too. They'd all lost their parents in one way or another, and left as orphans. They'd been found and taken to the agency months ago, where they were cared for by the humans there. Thinking about them brought his thoughts back to Pastel and his new home. Looking up, he realized that it was starting to get dark. He didn't want to get lost on his way home, and knew he would need to head back soon.

"Yes, I do", replied Buzz. He was going to have to spend some time thinking about what the older male had said about others of his kind not having wings. Why was he special? And fly? He'd never even given any thought to using his wings to fly. Would he be able to? Could Pastel fly? He'd have to ask her when he got home. She was going to be surprised when he told her about his first day out on his own. If she didn't decide to come with him tomorrow, then she was a silly kit, and he'd go without her anyway.

"I'll try and come back tomorrow. If you want, you can come to the edge of the woods and wait for me."

Buzz liked the sound of her voice. He wondered if she knew what their names were. So far she had yet to use either his or Pastel's. At the thought of his housemate, he wondered where she might be. The house was a huge thing, and there were many rooms for her to have gotten off to. But his belly rumbled just then, and he decided to sit down at the humans feet, and see if she would feed him. Sure enough, within minutes she was placing food down on the floor for him to eat. She placed a second down as well, and went to the doorway leading into the hall, and made a strange sound. He guessed she was trying to coax Pastel into the room, so she would be able to eat as well.

She heard the strange sound coming from the room at the end of the hallway and wondered what the human was doing. It certainly wasn't any form of speech she recognized, but she decided to go investigate anyway. The woman was standing in the doorway of the room, and she could just make out Buzz, his head down, and mouth busy eating something. Food! She hadn't realized just how hungry she was. She slowly approached the doorway, making sure there was no danger from the woman, and inched her way past her into the room. She noticed that there was food on the floor not far from Buzz, and she wasted no time walking over to it. It smelled good, but looked unlike anything she had ever eaten before. But if Buzz liked it, and he seemed to be enjoying himself immensely, then she figured it was safe to eat.

Buzz and Pastel cleared the plates of every last bit of food they had been given. If this was what living with a human was like, then neither one of them wanted to ever leave. By the time they finished, the sun had set, and the woman had lit lanterns around the house to provide the light she obviously needed in order to see. Buzz and Pastel didn't need such things, as their eyes were designed to adjust to any light, or lack thereof.

The woman had disappeared while they ate, but now she was back, standing in the doorway watching them. She made a gesture, and a sound that must have been her way of speaking, that led the two to believe she wanted them to follow her. Walking after her down the hall, Buzz said, "What did you do all day?"

"I found a sunny spot, and took a nap. I explored some of the rooms upstairs too," replied Pastel. "What did you do?" She didn't really care what he did, but it seemed the polite thing to ask.

"Oh! Let me tell you!" he said excitedly, and he proceeded to elaborate, in detail, all that he had done. Pastel's ears perked up when he talked about Rainbow. He was still talking when they entered the big room where Pastel had taken her nap earlier. The woman was showing them a spot on the floor where there were two large cushions. One was black and yellow like Buzz, and the other colored very much like Pastel. Buzz wasted no time loping over to the black one, and climbing up on it. He circled around twice, and then laid himself down on it. Following his lead, Pastel did the same, and by the time the woman walked through the doorway, they were both on their way into sleep.

Buzz awoke to something shining in his face. He had to squint his eyes in order to open them, and once he did, he realized that something was the sun, shining through a window. He looked over at Pastel, still asleep on her bed, and decided that would not do at all. If he was awake, then gosh darnit, she should be awake too. He padded over to where she lay, and lowering his head close to hers, he yelled, "Hey Pastel! It's morning! Wake up!"

She was dreaming again, and in her dream she was with other Voronwe. They were bigger than she was, but she couldn't make out their faces. It was not a good dream by any stretch of the imagination. They were running, and she was scared. Suddenly, one of the Voronwe yelled, and startled, she opened her eyes to a vision of black and gold, staring her in the face. "BUZZ!" she yelled, "Don't do that!" At least he had jarred her out of her bad dream.

"Come on! Let's go see if the woman left food out for us," and he ran out of the room and down the hall. She lazily rose from her soft bed, wishing she were still asleep in it, and followed him at a more leisurely pace. He was standing in the doorway, bouncing up and down in excitement. "She did! She did!" he shouted, and he ran over to the plate that he had eaten from the night before. She noticed that her plate also contained fresh food, but she went over to the bowl of water first, and got herself a drink before she started eating her food.

Buzz wasted no time finishing his food, for he wanted to get an early start, and see if Rainbow was waiting for him at the forests edge. He wanted Pastel to come along with him this time, but he didn't know what to say to her, to make her come with him. She had seemed interested in Rainbow last night when he told her about his time spent with the older Vornowe, so maybe if he told her he was going to try and find him this morning, she would want to go with him. It was worth a try at least. He went and got a drink, and waited for her to finish her food.

"So, I'm going to see if I can find Rainbow again this morning. I'm sure you have lots of exciting things to do, so you should stay here. I'll be fine on my own." He decided to try a new tact with her, and see if it worked. Girls never liked being told they couldn't do something.

He was going to find the Voronwe he called Rainbow? That part of his story last night was the only thing that had really interested her. She'd never met an adult of their kind before. She only had the dreams to go on. Perhaps this adult would know something of her parents, and Buzz's parents as well. She was not about to let him go alone. "I don't want to stay here," she said, "so I'm going to come with you. I want to meet this Rainbow fellow too. I think it will be interesting."

Interesting? Did she just say interesting? Buzz almost laughed, but stopped himself. If he wanted her to come along, he'd better not make her mad at him. He was not looking for interesting, he was looking for fun and adventure, and he hoped that Rainbow could help him find it. "Alright then, you can come along, but don't go wandering off. The forest is a big place, and if you get lost, I might not be able to find you." He turned, walked over to the swinging panel in the door and looking back at her said, "Well, come on. He might already be waiting for me," and he pushed himself through, out into the yard behind the house. Pastel sighed, and followed him outside. Together they walked the short distance to the edge of the wood, and there they sat, washing themselves, and waiting to see if the adult called Rainbow would make an appearance.
