The male was seemily unaware of the building sense of omen behind them as they went, his attention focused soley now on the placement of his paws in the slightly slippery ice and sand mix.

S'not as far as eh thought then, Neka said cheerfully in response to his companion's "Halfway there" comment. Eh'll be sorry for this lata', eh bet. Not moved this far inna long time.

(( Sorry for the late post. :3 ))

Elphie laughed at his comment, weaving carefully around the side of a frozen puddle. "Don't worry, you'll have plenty of time to rest up," She shivered lightly, as a half frozen mist from the lake gusted softly over her coat, giving her a sudden chill.

Ducking her head a little lower against the mercurial breeze, Elphie thought to herself. Was there anything else Neka needed to know about their pack? "Do you know of a wolf called Feanaro?" She asked, her fern green gaze hardening as she looked straight ahead of her. Chances were slim, but Feanaro's scent had been thick in the freelands.

Eh 'eard of 'im...but tha' wasn't much, he drawled, casting a side-ways glance at Elphie and noting the narrowed glare. Eh take it tha' eh's not onna yeh favorite wolves?

He padded slightly over the snow with little difficultly, also skirting around puddles here and there or parts where he could tell the snow might be a bit deeper than usual. The male's ears constantly swivelled from side to side as he kept some attention on his surroundings, but most on the shewolf.

Elphie arched her brow and cast Neka a sidelong glance, a wry smile on her lips. "Ahhah. Not exactly," She agreed, with a light snort of humor.

"I only ask because of the whispers I've heard in these woods. They say he has gone mad and left his mate; that he is stalking packs and has stolen pups." Her fur bristled as she spoke and she shook her head in anger.

"There was a time when he tried to join our pack to challenge Devvyl and take Selia for his own. They warded him off, of course--but it's just.." Her voice faltered and she looked a little sheepish. "In case he still haunts our packlands, I wanted to warn you. If you see him, don't let him do you any favors." She scowled, showing evidence of personal problems flickering through her mind. "He tricks many wolves into being in his debt in one way or another and uses it against them every opportunity he finds."

Neka pursed his lips somewhat as Elphie spoke, filing away the information for later.

Eh...dun want to be in debt to anyone, he said with faint amusement to his voice. Not to 'im anyway.

He continued to lope along, admiring the surroundings and enjoying the company, something he hadn't done that much in his life. Definately not a bad day for him at all.

Elphie chuffed a breath of air out her nostrils, not in the mood to pass up every last word of gossip.

"When I was a pup I would play by this river," She gave a quick nod behind them, back to where the water branched off from the lake in a thick snake. "He knocked me off a breaking branch once. I can't begin to count the number of times he's tried to pin me down with that," Despite her words, a smile rose to the she-wolf's lips as memories of her interogative puphood rose to the surface of her mind. She had wanted to understand everything the earth had to offer, explain every abstruse niche in her world.

"What was it like for you as pup? --I mean before the humans came," Her eyes flickered with an interested glint.

Neka fell silent at the question, his expression pensive...serene even...as he slowly thought back to how things were and should have stayed back when he was young. It was hard though, since most of his memories were behind a wall he'd put up so long ago to protect himself of the hurtful visions of his family's eventually death.
His brow flickered unpleasantly.

Well, he began slowly, eyes going forward again to watch the path they were taking. Eh dun think meh life was all tha' dif'rent from anyone elses. Meh parents were nothin' special, outside ah them bein' meh parents.

His tongue passed over his lips then as he paused for breath, trying to sort through the faded memories that were threatened to be overcome with much more gory, graphic images.

Meh fatha' was just ah huntin' type..meh motha' watched tha' pack pups. Eh always remember lots of playmates.

Elphie's ears slowly swiveled so that they were half facing back, expresing her tentative emotive state. She knew she was making her friend tread on fragile ground, and she had to be careful.

"Me too," She agreed with a hearty smile. Many playmates. Many pups. Warm fuzzy bodies. Tiny growling noises. Safety. "There were a lot of us running around--the beta mother gave birth just a couple weeks before my brother and I were born.."

Elphie deliberately overlooked the fact that her parents had been the leaders of the pack. She was a proud wolf, and though a prominent neo-beta, a tiny part of her couldn't help but feel she had failed her more impressive ancestry.

Realizing she had mentioned Chaq--her lost brother--her eyes darted back to Neka curiously. Would this remind him of the wolf Notoka?

Neka sighed slightly but otherwise didn't turn the conversation towards his brother or the rest of his family for that matter. It was better to remain broad until pinpointed questions required him to do otherwise. Instead, he rambled slightly, carefully skirting his less pleasant memories.

Most ah tha' pups were older, from what eh remember. Had a'coupla good, close friends...but mostly everyone kept ta' themselves. Meh pack was small.

Elphie smoothly took her pace down a notch, gusting out a misted sigh, a soft smile turning her maw. Though memories of her puphood were happy, the female felt an ache, for they were gone. She wondered if her companion was feeling much the same, knowing his past war far darker than her own. A weariness of sorts descended upon her, compounded by the fact that her muscles were growing tired. As the two came to a bending curve in the lake's edge Elphaba's ears pricked up.

"Perhaps we should be careful, this is where our journey strays closest to the two legs of the south--" She paused carefully and her eyes, filled with a nervousness, met her friend's hesitantly. She had never seen more of these humans than their tracks. Were they the good kind or the bad kind? Elphaba had no idea. "I have heard some humans are kind to wolves--but--" She trailed off softly, not liking her own implied meaning.

Neka slowed accordlingly, feeling his own muscles beginning to ache with complaint, and set his gaze on the woods before them. The stench of two-leg found his nostrils and he grimaced in a very pained expression, the hair on his neck rising slightly.

Nothin' about tha beasts makes meh forget wha' tha did to meh fam'ly, he murmered, his voice growing hard as did the narrowed gaze of his eyes that currently avoided Elphie's to save her the inner pain and anger that was reflected in them. Eh dun care if tha' ones there killed meh family or not. All of 'em ah guilty.

He exhaled sharped, as though trying to dislodge the scent of the two-legs from his nose, and pulled his ears back to his skull.

Elphie gave a soft, airy note of sympathy, a keyed down version of the strange whistle in a wolf's whimper. She heeded Neka's warning, her own ears flicking a bit back every few seconds in a mincing manner that was uncommon in her. She knew that she could give Neka no words of consolation, and ducked her head a bit in frustrated ignorance. She knew she could never begin to imagine what he had been through.

As the air currents swept the overbearing two-leg smell on in the opposite direction, her paws fell heavy on the sand speckled earth. She slowed her pace almost to a stop, sidling up alongside the male and nuzzling the thicker fur at the back of his neck with her cold muzzle in a gesture of affection.

"We're nearly there," She said quietly, and held her tongue, not quite admitting how tired she was growing. Wolves travelled miles in a matter of hours, but hunting in the freelands had been scarce. Her eyes asked Neka if he'd like to continue or rest for a bit.

Neka did not relax until the scent of the two-legs was very faint, if at all noticeable, his ears never leaving their pressed tight nature until finally they had slowed to their current very leisurely stroll. And in good time too. His back was now throbbing slightly from the movement across the slippery terrain and though he tried to hide it, the tightness of his brow was probably enough to give him away.

'Bout how far yet? he inquired quietly, forcing the slight whine of pain that threatened to leave his throat down. Meh back hurts ah bit, but if we ah close, eh rather just keep goin' unless yeh ah tired too. He nosed her shoulder a bit to emphasis his point. It was up to her.

Elphie paused for a moment in her stride with a ponderous 'Hmm', her eyes clouding for a moment in a familiar calculating look. "It's close, but we'll have to go over a bit of uneven ground before we reach the den sites."

The terrain, the shewolf recalled fondly, was like that of many temperate zones, with rocky soil and beach bolders close by. They would have to pass a small stretch of coastal land to reach the packlands. She turned her muzzle toward the other, taking advantage of the opportunity to brush her face against his ruff once more. "Shall we try for one fell swoop?"
