Fleur blinked at the good lady bit. A good lady? Her? She nodded. "Especially when one has not had breakfast. That is the most important meal of the day you know." She nodded in the direction that she had came from for her swim. "My place is that way. I can get you something to eat if you would like as well."

"Only if I'm not encroaching on your hospitality," Kol said, smiling in a friendly way but sky blue eyes serious. Not all foxes liked playing host to wanderers, no matter how friendly their exchanges were, and even offers of food or shelter were given more for the sake of politeness than a real desire for company.
Rule of thumb was that their kind tended to travel alone or in pairs, and rarely in groups any larger. Tribes were exceptions, and sometimes young stayed with their parents and formed a type of clan built by blood. Kol himself came from a tribe, though not an official one. It would have been more accurate to say his parents were of the tribe and he'd been born there, for he'd never really felt an attachment to any of the members. Things could very well change now but back then he'd been younger, full of wanderlust.
Kol extracted himself from his thoughts before they threatened to consume him. It was a path he'd already worn, and doubtless would go down again. Lovely company like this, however, should be cherised for as long as he had it. Now why did that thought send a pange of loneliness through his heart?
"You know, I never understood that saying," Kol started up conversationally, moving closer to Fleur so as to follow her. "I've always been a late riser and never much inclined to breakfast, myself."

Fleur shook her head and gave Kol a comforting smile. "Of course not. Its pretty quiet this morning, which is unusually around here, so someone to talk to over food will be nice." Fleur hoped she had enough for Kol to eat as well if he so desired. There were some apples from nearby trees that she brought in anytime she found one that fell. The little critters that share her place occassionally brought her food as well in their thanks for shelter. If he wanted something other than fruit though...Fleur didn't have anything like fish or smaller creatures already caught.
Fleur chuckled. "Perhaps because your stomach already knew it missed breakfast and decided to wait for lunch time." Oh wow. That sounded like something CeeCee would say. Maybe having different company for breakfast was a good thing. "I know that having breakfast gives one energy throughout the day. Helps the brain get the body going."
The trees thinned as they neared Fleur's dwelling. "What would you like to eat Kol?" Maybe Fleur should have cleaned her den this morning instead of swimming. Fleur blinked. Why was she so suddenly worried about what her den looked like?

Kol hummed thoughtfully. "Anything you have would be fine," he said. "I'll be honest, my tastes in food is a tad unrefined and I have few real preferences." He shrugged, grinning good-naturedly. "I tend to just rank foods in order of "easy to eat" and "not so easy to eat". I imagine I exasperate people sometimes with my lack of preference."
He chuckled, then turned his eyes around to peer at Fleur's den brightly. He hadn't gone inside of course, it would be rude to just assume he was invited inside her dwelling. There was enough visible from outside to satisfy his curiousity for the moment, however.

Someone with the same idea hm? Interesting. "I'm the same. At least, not having real preferences." Fleur didn't like trying to rank stuff. Everything had its uses, so why make a big deal out of if something, or someone, was better than another? Fleur poked her head into her den real quick, to see if any of last night's company was still there. The little creatures were comfortable around Fleur. She wasn't so sure about other foxes.
Seeing nothing but some food and her own bedding, Fleur looked over her shoulder at Kol. "I'll be right out. It's too beautiful a day to be eating inside isn't it?" She grinned. "At least for berries and fruit."

Kol grinned cheerfully. "I can second that," he said amiably. "It's amazing, but even when you live in a forest you still really appreicate all the good weather days and the peace of it all. l sometimes worry if it'll begin to become commonplace."
He sat down, curling his bushy tail neatly around his feet, patiently waiting for Fleur to collect what she thought would make a good meal. He hummed pleasantly under his breath while he did so, blue eyes flicking around the area curiously to see the place Fleur called home.

Fleur smiled as she saw the pile of food in the corner. Apparently the creatures from last night were extremely grateful. Lots of apples, and several branches of berries. Fleur nosed or pawed the food items onto two branches stuck together with lots of leaves, what she used when she went out looking for food in order to bring it back. Gripping the smaller end in her mouth, Fleur backed her way out of her home and out to where Kol was.
She deposited the makeshift tray besides her guest. "Bon appetit." She sat on the other side of it and stared out at the view she had. "Always. On the days I might feel down, I simply have to look outside and see what's around me in order to cheer myself up." She took one of the berry branches and popped a berry in her mouth. Fleur turned her head to look at Kol. "Commonplace?" Fleur shook her head. "Never. There's always something new to see."

"Yours is indeed a unique eye, then," Kol said, rolling a few berries in front of his and nibbling on them one at a time, laying on the ground to better reach them. He looked up at Fleur, a rueful half-smile on his face. "Perhaps it's a curse of mine, but though I do my best to look past the surface when it comes to foxes, I never seem to be able to manage the same with nature. One patch of trees seems much like the other to me."

"Perhaps think of the trees like foxes? We're always changing, be it in looks, personality, beliefs..." Fleur looked out at the area she called home. "This place is like that, as are other places. The seasons come and go, and depending on where you live, the trees and plants change with them. They grow, they lose leaves, they die. Some places might have one animal family living in it. Others might have more. Some might give so much shade that you can't see the sky. Others might give sparse shade."
She smiled as she looked back at Kol. "I don't think its a curse you have. Maybe you just need to spend more time with nature. You seem to do so well with foxes." Realizing what she said, Fleur blushed and looked down. "I mean, from the different topics we've been discussing I infered you did."

"Trees having personalities," Kol asked, quirking an eyebrow in amusement. "I think I'd have to spend a lot of time with nature before I saw things quite like that. Maybe it's easier with foxes because we change so much quicker. Trees are slow to change."
He gave Fleur a smile to show he didn't take any kind of offense at her comment about how he did well with foxes, though he didn't offer any commentary on it. He didn't have any really deep connections with anyone, so how could he know if he was successful at it or not? Still, compliments were always nice.
"You seem to know the forest so well, think you could give me examples of the personalities you see in it?"

Fleur blushed. "Not a lot of foxes come out this way so its usually just me with nature." Unless CeeCee decided to stick around that day. "And its not personalities per say. It's more of a connection to what we have."
Fleur looked at the tree line to see if there were any examples. She pointed off to their left, at one of the tallest trees they could see. "Like that one, I think it's like a grandparent. More than likely it's the reason some of these trees are here. It's been here longer than the others." A little to the right of that..."Those there are like parents. They provide shelter to so many of the animals here, and they're different. One might be home to a certain type of bird. Another has so many roots sticking up out of the ground, that it makes an impromptu shelter or den for those that need it." Fleur looked over at Kol. "Further into the forest behind us, are the ones that would be considered the troublemakers. That part is so dense that nothing can get through and you have to go around. And its because they keep dropping their seedlings so close to each other."

Kol looked off in the direction Fleur had pointed when she spoke of thick trees. "Hmmm. It must be a very young section of forest, if it's all trees. As they grow older and spread out they block light, which eventually kills the smaller ones and frees up the ground."
Kol turned back to Fleur, smiling a little. "I grew up in a forested region, actually, with a group known as Caledonia. I don't know if any of my brothers and sisters stayed, I was one of the first to leave."
His blue eyes took on a distant look, as though he was remembering something far in his past. "Caledonia land is quite old. We don't get many new trees unless one of the old giants falls in a storm."

"Even if it is young it can still tell a story, as well as be looked at differently each time or have different personalities." Fleur smiled. "Just like a kit I guess. They're still growing and learning about themselves so they can constantly change too."
The vixen tilted her head at Kol as she chewed another piece of their breakfast in her mouth. She swallowed. "Tell me about your land, before you left. What was it like?" Fleur never strayed far from her own den, except for the one time she went with CeeCee to visit another fox. To hear about another land, she liked that.

Kol laughed. "Just like kits, trying to do far too much and convinced of their immortality, rushing forward with all they've got. I imagine the older trees look down on younger groves and smile and shake their heads, like grandparents do when you do something silly," he said, amusement in his voice.
When Fleur asked him where he came from, Kol got quiet and speculative. "Huh. It's been awhile since I was last there, so most of this will be from a kit perspective. The clan lives in old ruins, built by humans a long time ago. A lot of stuff is still standing to make it convienent for denning and defense, though I've heard some foxes get nervous being around human-made dwellings."
He paused to let Fleur picture that, then continued. "It's on flat land, nothing but grass around it. On one side are the cliffs, and the ocean. You can follow that and more flat, grassy land, and you'll come upon a large stretch of mountains. Those protect the land, make it more difficult to just stumble across. Next to that we've got a forest, with a river running through it and to the ocean, with a cave system that pops up in random places because of the mountains."
He cocked his head and smiled charmingly. "We've just a little of everything, it seems."

Fleur gave a sigh. "It sounds like it does have everything. That way if one wanted to live in a different environment, they wouldn't have to go to far right? And they would still be with the tribe."
Fleur still wasn't sure what a tribe was like. She had talked to a female, Hiyoko, about joining her tribe as a carer for kits. But so far nothing had happened, which was why Fleur was still living out here. Maybe Kol could help her understand some tribe stuff better....maybe. After all, he was here now and not with his tribe.
"What about the human dwellings? You said they were ruins, and that some of the members didn't feel comfortable around them. What do they look like? Are there any odd decorations or something?"
