Felina put her head on her paw boots, allowing herself to recall the time she had tracked her first predator. The paw marks had given her target away as a purewalker, and as she closed in she had been far too cocky. She attacked to soon, believing that no one would be able to stop the rage she held for her mothers death. That had not been the case, her attack had done nothing but annoy the skinwalker, and soon she was fighting on the defensive for her life.
Her left wing got shreded then, as she had used it to shield her eyes from a pawed attack. When everything had seemed hopeless she had realised there was only one thing she could do to avoid death... she could fly, hopefully at least, while the walker couldn't. Everything had happened so fast. Her heart had pounded in her chest with fear, but she had some how managed to spread her damaged wings and get airborne... though that hadn't lasted long. Her damaged wing ached and she was struggling to compensate for the tears in it. Soon she lunged back to the ground, a slash to her rump had her trying desperatly again.
Felina had only just escaped with her life. She had been more patient after that... had trained harder... made herself faster and stronger.... it was still no easy feat bring one of those beast down. But it was her pleasure to try. One day she would find the one who had taken her mother..... she wouldn't stop or allow herself to die until then.
Felina was so lost in her memories that she had tuned out part of the other mares story.

Sophia's eyes went wide.... and a 'oh no' even spilled from her lips as she listened. Who was Echo? Why would he scare away Serenity? That big meany!
Sophia didn't like bullies! And as far as she was concerned Echo was a bully! Especially since he had been so nice to Serenity before turning on her. "That's naughty" She grunted with indignity as she wanted to hear what happened next.
And for a moment she wondered... if I took Kristan with me would he do that to me? She frowned, not being able to imagine kind Kristan as anything but nice.... of course Kristan had saved her from a kalona! This Echo hadn't done that for Serenity... that made Kristan better than Echo right?
She nodded, strangely pleased with that notion.
Unable to stop herself from asking yet another question she found the words; "Did she get away from him?" Spilling from her lips.

Kaida's smile only widened at the reaction of the young mare, even as he eyes wandered to the deadly mare that sat with them.... though it seemed she was no longer listening. Trapped in her own thoughts? Kaida had heard rumours of the instability of any 'good' breed when mixed with those of an 'evil' breed. Was her two halves warring with each other?
Not able to consider that thought more she focused on Sophia and the story again. "Serenity ran and ran back to Hunter, who was outraged at Echo being here... he stormed off, with Serenity close to his heels, as he went to confront Echo. But he was gone when they got there. The only sign he had ever been there was a white rose left in the spot her and Serenity had sat." She remembered looking at it, wondering if he had left it on purpose... and part of her had wanted to keep it, but since Hunter had been there she had left it to get damaged and destroyed by the rain and mud.
"It wasn't long after that that a messanger had come to her and Hunter. They had heard of Serenity's skills and wanted her to help them... to return to the herd." She remembered wanting to scream 'no' at them... but since she had always planned to return she did. "When she returned she grinned at all those who had ever taunted her, saying, 'I told you you would need me before I needed you.'"

Felina blinked back to reality and heard the words.... 'she grinned at all those who had ever taunted her, saying 'I told you you would need me before I needed you''. She frowned a little.... part of her wished that she could show all those who had scorned her for being part Kalona, or told her she was insane and would never kill a skinwalker on her own.... show them she had! That she had survived! That she had taught herself to be better than what anyone had ever expected her to be.....
But that would be pointless. It was unlikely those that had taunted her would even remember her. Why would they? She rarely ever spoke to others, and usually it was only ever to get information. Information was key to her mission.
If Felina died... would anyone even miss her?

Sophia moved and leaned her head on Kaida; listening intently as the story developed. Her little heart fluttered at the idea of a white rose being left in the spot she had been... why had he done that? Had it been on purpose? A sign or signal of some sort?
It turned out that Sophia was quite the romantic, and although part of her thought that Echo was a jerk she hoped the story had a happy ending. What happened to Serenity? Did she and Hunter find what they were looking for?
What had happened she didn't know since the story once again shifted. She was rivioted, completely distracted of the storm even as it rumbled overhead.
A smile appeared on her face and widened still as Serenity's words played in her head.... 'I told you you would need me before I needed you'. Oh! She would love to say that, but her herd was full of so many strong and loyal fighters, so many smart and crafty mares, so many kind and gentle beings that Sophia had yet to discover her place in the herd... would she ever have a place? She was modicoddled so much that sometimes she feared she would never be allowed to explore and find herself.... the experiences she had here, although wonderful, made her worry that she would never get a chance to grow up.
Looking over at Kaida she smiled softly, trying her best to hide her train of thought from the other mare. "What did they do? They hate that they had needed her after all?" She imagined they did. No one liked admitting they were wrong.

Kaida smiled down at the little mare, moving to accomedate her small form as she snuggled closer to her. Sometimes Kaida wished she could have a foal or two of her own... but things were never that simple.
She nodded to the young filly, smiling more as she continued her story. "Yes. The herd leader hated that they needed her, but that didn't change the fact that he did. Hit bit back his pride in order to get his task done." She nodded to herself, lost in her memories for a moment. "They wanted Serenity to go and get something for them.... at first she wondered why they wanted an errand girl when they could have just sent any of the stallions... when she discovered where. They wanted her to go to the joining herd." She saw the little filly frown below her, she didn't understand the significance of that... not surprising, the world Sophia grew up in was very different to the one Kaida had. "I know it sounds strange, but the other herd were less likely to kill a mare... harm her... mame her... yes, but kill her now...." In an effort to drag her story out of the darkness she continued, offering no more of an explaination. "She agreed, as they knew she would and that evening she left in search of the item."
Her vision drifted, and suddenly she back in that cold forest, shrunk in size to preserve heat as she tried to avoid the guards that had nearly caught her. She couldn't let them find her, couldn't fail... failure would just mean her exhile again and she hadn't wanted to go back to all of that... couldn't go back to all of that.
"It took over a fortnight, but eventually she returned with the item, she didn't even know what was so important about it... it just looked like a dirty old box, and because she had been chased and hunted she had never had a chance to peek inside." Kaida still remembered the look on the elders face as she actually brought it back... it would be one she would remember forever. Astonisment mixed with a soft hatred.

Felina stretched with a lazy awkwardness as her own mind consumed her thoughts... at least until her ears picked up words of being hunted and chased. She came back to reality and looked at Kaida, with the little white filly snuggled into her, when had they done that? She should have been paying attention... Felina chastised herself, she should never have lowered her guard! She of all people knew the importance of never letting your guard down. She was growing lazy surrounded by this herd... growing unsteady and unsure of herself. It made her decision all the easier to make. Once the storm was passed she would leave... there was no other choice. Her exsistance was hanging in the balance.
Still, she listened to Kaida's words. Felina knew what it was like to run and hide, to be chased, always chased, never getting a moments peace... and although Kaida hadn't said it Felina could sence that the other mare had been scared out of her mind when all this had happened... it didn't get any easier, if anything all it did was give you practise of staying one or two steps ahead.... just enough to live and fight another day.
Felina wasn't ready to die. She hadn't made an impact on the number of skinwalkers... hadn't found the 'one' she was looking for... and simply refused to believe or accept that she never would! NO! She would! She had to! She would become more aggressive in her search... look high and low... run if she had to, anything to ensure she never missed a target, to make sure she milked every source in order to reach her end goal. And when she was done? Well... then she would let herself die.

Sophia gasped as the story once again took another turn.... how could they... that was the most selfish thing she had EVER heard! And she had two brothers who always wanted the last berry or treat! She frowned as she listened, not sure she would want to be in Serenity's hooves after all....
Her mind was distracted as she revealed that the character had found the item... but... "A fortnight?" That seemed forever to Sophia, but since she was so young he supposed that was only to be expected.
"What was it?" Her little tail wiggled with excitment and joy as she listened with expectation to the story. What would happen next? Would she ever be able to tell a story like this?

Kaida turned to looked at Felina for a moment, the way she was moving made her frown... what was with that strange kirin-kalona anyways?
Ignoring her she returned her favour towards Sophia. "It turned out to be a special letter, something that had been stolen from them a long time ago. In it was a message, a way to stop the war between the herds....." She smiled, shocked to discover such a thing. It was written that a promise had been made between the two herds.... that when one herd leader had a daughter first and the other had a male first they would become bound together and would join the herds in peace and harmony. Such a thing had never happened... until now. Both lines had been known for their males, so the female who Kaida had once considered a sister had come as a shock. "...a marriage would take place."
But like with all things, it was never quite that simple. "It was decreed that the strongest and best warrior from both herds would join in a quest to bring back the items for the wedding... and if they did so within two moons the herds would be joined in peace." She nodded, "Serenity wanted to be that warrior, she wanted to prove that she was just as good as any stallon... " At first they hadn't let her try, claiming that a female would just embarass herself and it was a waste of time, but Kaida had argued, insisting that she desevered the chance after everything they had put her through. After all... SHE was the one to retrieve the item. SHE was the one they had abandoned and then later needed. SHE was just as good! All she wanted was a chance.

Felina noticed Kaida looking at her and felt incredibly small in that moment. She gulped and shrunk back slightly, wishing to be ignored and forgotten. Felina didn't like being the focus of anyones attention... always sought for just the opposite.
Feeling uncomfortable she felt an urge to run away and hide... but didn't want to risk the storm alone. She wasn't suicidal after all. Defeated she collapsed back to the ground and simply tried to be as small as possible... to be ignored by everyone, including the two mares that had been talking to her for the past few hours.
Her ears flickered as words were spoken but she was no longer listening, no long interested in all of that. She just wanted to be alone, her skin was crueling, she felt like every pair of eyes were on her... and she HATED IT!
