"I think it'd mean a great deal if we were being forced to work together. Or if we were thinking of making this something more serious. But, some people clearly wouldn't have any idea what they're talking about, given the situation." Felix spoke in such a deadpan voice that it was hard to get a read on what he was really thinking underneath that still exterior. Either he thought they were too different to ever really become friends, or he was ok with the fact that there were differences between the firefly and the speedster. Raine certainly fell into the latter category - she was always up for a challenge. And if their interactions so far were any indication, he was going to be quite a challenge.

The topic of conversation turned to their futures, Raine confused by the very notion that he wouldn't have some sort of life plan. Raine, of course, had a pretty good idea of where she wanted to be in five to ten years, but she chose not to press the subject any further. At least not on their first "date" as new friends. It seemed a little too invasive when they were just getting to know each other. Besides, while it was confusing it didn't necessarily shock her - he didn't exactly seem like the kind of guy with a plan. Instead, he started to poke fun at her, insisting that she'd asked him out on a date no matter how adamantly she tried to deny it.

"Maybe I just wanted you to like me as a tutor so you'd come back," she started, "And I don't remember you insisting that we stay on campus and hit the books either, you know. So first I get criticized for not having any fun, and then I get criticized for throwing the rulebook to the wind and doing something spontaneous. There's just no way to win with you, is there?" It was clear that she was starting to get slightly exasperated, a soft shade of pink taking to her cheeks as she busied herself eating her food as it was set before them. Felix on the other hand, showed no signs of letting up his constant assaults, telling her that she needed to get a boyfriend, but in the same breath telling her that he was off the menu. It made her laugh, however, the brunette insisting that she'd never even consider trying to make that happen with him, even though they'd known each other mere hours. In that department, she got the feeling that opposites of their caliber wouldn't really attract.

He was certainly a cocky one, lecturing her about how they weren't in debate club and that if they were, he would be winning without question. Hazel eyes narrowed at him for a moment, an incredulous look taking over her features as he then continued to call her a nerd. It was futile for Raine to try to defend herself, though she did try. If she were smarter, she would have learned that it was best to just let him think he was right and keep her mouth shut.

"Not everyone finds it to be such a bad thing. Besides, I'd rather be a colossal nerd than an arrogant, know-it-all a**." It was like the words wouldn't stop, the lightning bug continuing and asking him what his idea of "cool" was, to which he responded that it wasn't something he could really explain. He compared them to the Quarterback and the Captain of the Chess Club, Raine tossing her curls back over her shoulders as she sat back in the booth, laughing. His eyes simply scanned her, until she finally gave in and brushed at her face with her napkin as she accused him of being a jerk. Even his response was arrogant, so irritating but fitting to his personality at the same time. He turned her question back onto her, asking if she enjoyed being a nerd, or she was just good at it.

"Well, given your expert analysis of me and my life, I'd have to say both is the correct answer." They went back to their meal, the brunette almost slamming her fork down as he told her that she missed it, glancing back at her with a hint of amusement on his features. He was enjoying every minute of this - every squirm, every flinch. She was playing right into his hands every time, too. Though she'd never admit it, it was a good thing he was cute. Otherwise she'd probably have zapped him and stormed out by now. For whatever reason, though, she was feeling like a glutton for punishment.

"So, as we leave this evening is there anything you want me to know about you other than you're a total jerk that likes nothing more to get underneath my skin?"

“It’s all a matter of perception. That’s all I’m saying.” Felix continued in perfect deadpan, his expression blanking as he spoke. He wasn’t going to make it easy to figure him out. He liked being a pain to some people, especially when they were trying to figure him out and he kept changing things up. Most people hated that and got frustrated with him, which the speedster in turn found highly amusing. It was a cycle he liked. And it made it very hard to tell when he was being serious, which made things that much more interesting.

“Or maybe you just wanted to falsely advertise. Make me think the tutoring sessions would be all fun and games. If your goal was to get me to like you as a tutor, I’m not sure how well that is working in your favor.” Raising an eyebrow at her with a blank expression, Felix listened to the rest of what she had to say. “Oh yes because the slacker is going to insist on staying and study.” Rolling his eyes, Felix gave her a shrug. “I criticized you asking out your tutor on a date when you first meet him just because you think he’s 'yummy'. And no, there is no way to win so you might as well stop.” Giving her a small smile he noticed the tint to her cheeks and smiled wider. “Pink is a good color on you.”

“Or do they find it to be a bad thing and are just too nice to tell you? You may never know the truth on that one.” At the last part of her statement he considered her with a critical eye. “Not everyone can pull off arrogant know-it-all a** like I can. You would fail miserably, but if you are happy being a colossal nerd, then whatever, your life.” Shrugging the speedster didn’t bother saying anymore. At her questioning of his definition of cool, the speedster gave a quick response, comparing the two of them to the quarterback and the captain of the chess team. The brunette seemed to find this highly amusing and he watched her lean back and laugh.

Being accused of being a jerk didn’t even serve to throw the man off guard for even a moment. Immediately he responded to the brunette, then proceed to turn her own question back on her without missing a beat. If she thought she was going to win, she was sadly mistaken. Her response drew a ‘tsking’ noise from the young man, but he didn’t bother to respond verbally. His ‘tsk’ would show that he feigned disappointment that she was so complacent with being a nerd. It didn’t take a super genius to see that the brunette was not super happy as he declared that she had missed what she was trying to get. She made it so easy. His expression full of amusement as he looked up at her.

At her question Felix gave her a thoughtful gaze as if he really was considering all she needed to know. “No I think that’s about it. I already know that you find me attractive, and besides that, knowing I am a jerk seems to be acceptable. And obviously I know everything I need to know about you as well, so I think we are all good.” Giving her the thumbs up he took another bite of his food and smirked. “Besides, I wouldn’t be able to get under your skin if you didn’t make it so easy Brownie.”

If she didn't worry about giving him more ammunition, she'd have released a frustrated grunt, gotten up and stormed away from the table. Raine wasn't used to letting people get under her skin like this, and his deadpan voice might as well have been nails on a chalkboard. Still her desire to make friends seemed to be winning out in the end, and she managed to keep her face as neutral as possible as he tried to catch her in some sort of trap pertaining to what exactly they were doing in these little sessions that had been arranged. Accusing her of false advertising made the firefly laugh, mostly at the such a ridiculous notion.

"I feel like you have bigger issues if you'd believe a tutor telling you that tutoring sessions are going to be fun and games." His comment about her not doing very well in winning him over caused her expression to tense slightly, arms crossing over her chest as he raised an eyebrow towards her. It was always easier to get someone to cooperate when they were on your side, as opposed to fighting against them every step of the day. No matter what she did, she got the distinct impression that he wasn't going to make anything easy for her. That was something she should have expected from the beginning. And, like it or not, she was one of those people that wanted everyone around her to like her.

She too rolled her eyes when he explained that his critic of her was not that she'd suggested they go out to eat, but instead that she had asked him out on a date when she was supposed to be the tutor in charge. At least he admitted that there was no way she was going to win, and that she might as well stop. It was a sound suggestion, no matter how hard it was for her to just let it go. He'd managed to get under her skin now, and there was no way that was just going to disappear. His compliment for her in pink confused her for a moment, until she became completely aware of the heat in her cheeks.

The topic of conversation changed to the fact that she was a nerd, Raine trying desperately to defend herself, though she didn't know why she cared so much. Asserting that not everyone found it to be an insult, he responded with a suggestion that they were just too nice to tell her to her face. But, he was right about one thing: no one could pull off an arrogant, know-it-all a** quite like he was proving capable of. He ended, however, with some sort of strange blessing, which caused her to laugh.

"That's right, it is my life. And I'm perfectly content with it." She followed up with her own question regarding what he thought was "cool," the speedster's answer putting them in two different social circles entirely. The mental image was too funny not to laugh at, falling prey to what may or may not have been another of his stupid practical jokes (she couldn't quite tell) before calling him a jerk. She was really going to have to look up some new synonyms if they were going to be spending more time together. It's not like it even seemed to phase him. If anything, it just made her feel a little better. All he did was tsk at her, hazel eyes rolling towards the heavens.

Asking if there was anything else he wanted her to take away from their first meeting, he seemed to consider the question carefully, finally conceding that she already had the information she needed to know. He was cute, annoying and already knew everything about her as well, apparently. He gave her a thumbs up, taking another bite of his food, joking about how easy she made it to get underneath her skin.

"Guess I'll have to toughen up, then. Maybe become an a*****e like you, so I don't care anymore." She couldn't help but smile, grabbing another crab rangoon from the plate and taking a bite of it.

Felix remained perfectly neutral as he observed the young woman across from him. She did a good job of looking mostly neutral, but clearly she’d not had nearly as much practice at it as the speedster. It was still an admirable attempt, but she would require years more practice before she could truly pull it off. It was hopeless really. Obviously he was having some kind of an effect on the girl and that was all he really cared about in the end. He didn’t care if he made friends or not, but he would be damned if he was going to make himself forgettable. People would remember him if only as ‘that a*****e’. It was a title he wore well.

She seemed to find his accusation amusing and Felix gave her an unamused look as if the entire thing was dead serious and her laughter was completely out of place. It helped that sometimes people had a hard time telling if he was joking or not. “There are plenty of tutors out there that are perfectly fine with... doing other things during tutoring sessions...” The subtle smirk on his face would probably tell Raine that he’d had at least one of those tutors in the past. He made it no secret that he wasn’t concerned with his academic future. A normal life was something he would never have anyway.

It didn’t take someone keenly trained in facial expressions and observative to tell that his comment was not going over well. Her expression tensing at his comment. It almost made him want to say that she wasn’t doing as terrible as he led her to believe. Almost. As it stood she seemed like the type to want people to like her. Now he just needed to see how far she would go to win people over. He was terribly concerned either way. At worst he actually had to do his school work.

Raine’s rolled eyes were noted, as was her giving up on trying to win over in a battle of words and appearances. It was amusing really, but not many people could keep up with the speedster in terms of a battle of words, his mind worked much faster than most. A side effect of his power that could benefit him more if he chose to use it for anything other than winning arguments and teasing while subtly flirting with young women. She looked confused about his comment of pink for a few moments before it seemed to dawn on her. How was she supposed to teach him if she couldn’t stop blushing like a schoolgirl? He looked forward to finding out as he wasn’t planning on stopping the commentary even while they did work. He decided then and there to make it his mission to derail the sessions as much as possible.

The speedster thought Raine’s attempts to defend herself were admirable, but again ultimately futile. Oh he was enjoying himself. In the end his words seemed to amuse her again and she laughed. Her response drawing a shrug. “That’s probably for the best, after all it’s not easy to change behavior, and for someone like you... It’s for the best you try not. Besides people are often content when they have never tasted the forbidden fruit so to speak. That way they don’t know what they are missing. So again best not to try for you. My advice, you will listen to.” Wiggling his fingers in her direction as if casting some type of spell or something of the sort, Felix gave a small smirk. He couldn’t have her thinking he was nice or anything.

Asking if there was anything else she should take away from their first meeting, Felix was quick to give an answer, that in hindsight, Raine probably should have expected. She gave her response with a smile, before grabbing another of her crab rangoons and taking a bite. Giving a look of disapproval and another ‘tsk’ the speedster responded. “Sweetheart, please, you couldn’t be like me even if you tried your whole life. It’s cute that you want to be like me though.” The last sentence was given in the same manner a grown up might use with a small child. She never learned did she?

They seemed to be observing each other, trying their best to not let their emotions betray them. He was better at it than she was. Raine had always been pretty much an open book whether she wanted to be or not. It was clear that he was trying to trap her into admitting that this was something that it wasn't. She couldn't help but laugh when he accused her of false advertising, shaking her head despite the fact that he seemed to be completely serious about it.

"Maybe you should find one of those tutors, then. Or, have you already been through all of them without any success?" His smirk was infuriatingly cute, though she tried not to focus on it for too long. How someone could be so lackluster about their future, she had no idea, but if they were going to work together, his attitude was something that she'd have to get used to. Maybe eventually she could figure out how she might be able to use it against him. Trick him into caring. Of course, the very notion seemed ridiculous.

Her expression tensed as he mentioned that she wasn't doing a good job of winning him over, arms crossing over her chest. It was something that she would have to get used to, really. She couldn't win everyone over, that was a reality that she would have to face eventually. He continued to insist, however, that this was some sort of date that she had initiated, causing her eyes to roll heavenward. There was no use arguing with him. She was just playing right into his hands every time and he was enjoying every single minute of it. It was only when he pointed out that she looked good in pink that she became aware of the fact that she was blushing like crazy. Man, she was really going to have to grow some thicker skin if she was going to be hanging around with him, attempting to tutor him.

Felix next accused her of being a nerd, Raine doing her best to try and defend herself. At the end, he tried to give her some subtle blessing for her nerdish life, which made her laugh despite herself. At the end of the day, he was right - it was her life. He warned her that she shouldn't try to change behavior, insisting that she didn't know what she was missing. He wiggled his fingers in her direction, like he was casting some kind of spell on her to get her to listen to him. "Don't those kinds of tricks only work on weak minds? Is that what you think of me?"

As their dinner came to a close, she asked him if there was anything else that he wanted her to take away from their first outing, to which he responded in the negative. He rattled off a list of things that he had gathered from her throughout their interactions, assuring her that they were both good with information for the time being. She joked about having to toughen up if they were going to be hanging out, perhaps taking on more of his "I don't care" attitude, to which he seemed to disapprove. Swallowing, another incredulous expression overtook her features as he promised her that any attempts to become more like him would be met with failure, though it was cute that she wanted to try. His tone was like a parent talking to a small child - it made her skin tingle in a way she wanted to just zap him right then and there. But her power was the one thing she'd been able to keep from him this entire time. There was no way she was going to give that up now.

"Is that a fact? I think I could get the hang of it. How hard is it to just insult everyone around you, belittle their intelligence and not care about a single thing in the world? If you can do it, it can't be that difficult. Granted, you've got a head start." Her body relaxed back in the booth once more, tossing her curls over her shoulders. This was sounding more and more like a challenge by the minute, and she had a hard time turning down a challenge.

A smile planted itself on the man’s lips at the thought of some of his previous tutors, the speedster’s gaze going towards the ceiling as he let himself think of those encounters. Raine’s words serving to pull Felix out of his thoughts long enough to raise an eyebrow. “Aw do I detect a hint of jealousy?” The way he said it was as if it were the cutest thing in the world. The dark haired man hadn’t detected any jealousy, but she didn’t need to know that. “I wouldn’t say I have been through them without any success. More like I have been through them with... limited success in the academic front. I have passed all my important classes after all.” Granted barely, but he cared little enough to go for anything higher than a passing grade.

Had Felix knew of Raine’s plans to try and trick him into caring, he would have laughed in her face and wished the brunette good luck. That wouldn’t work anytime soon. He was well aware of the future that awaited him and had long since made peace with it. It wasn’t a bad future really. The man was pleased to see that she had stopped arguing with him and accepted what he said as the truth. Or at the very least realized a hopeless cause when she encountered it.

Pointing out the pink in her cheeks it was cute the way she seemed to take his comments. She was waaaaay too easy. Accusing the young woman of being a nerd, the conversation that followed amused Felix greatly. Warning her away from trying to change her behavior, the man made a motion as if casting a spell. Her response drawing a thoughtful expression from the man. “I dunno you tell me. Did it work? Are you going to try and change or stay the same?” At the question of what he thought of her, the speedster gave her a mysterious look. “I think you are...” Pausing as if considering something, suddenly he smirked. “Did you really think it would be that easy?”

The dark haired woman made a joke about toughening up a little, and Felix was quick to let her know that it was something that would be impossible for her. It was clear his tone and choice of words were well used. She looked ready to reach over the table and attempt to strangle him. Her own choice of words, if they were an attempt to get a rise out of him, failed miserably. Instead the speedster simply chuckled and leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms giving her an “oh really” look. “That is a fact brownie. You can think what you want, but you are way too nice, first of all, to go around insulting everyone.”

“Second of all it is a lot harder than it sounds to come up with these insults so they affect people in the desired way. And lastly, it takes effort to not care about anything. You simply don’t have the necessary willpower or the right “stuff” to do all these things. Give it up.” Felix highly doubted that he would be proved wrong.

The insinuation that she was jealous that he had been to other tutors before accepting her offer almost made her laugh, though he was quick to clarify that he had been through them enough to be able to pass the "important" classes. How one could make the distinction between the importance of one class over another - they were in high school. All of them counted, if they were going to get into decent colleges. Therein likely lay the most fundamental difference between them.

"Well, hopefully we can graduate from limited success to actual success." It was probably a lofty goal, but Raine was a believer at heart. If anyone could get through to him, it had to be her. After all, if he didn't succeed with her at the head of his tutor program, there really wasn't any other hope for him. Maybe he knew that - maybe he didn't. If he did, his little "I don't care about anything" act was really, REALLY good.

Eventually, the girl just had to give up on their banter about whether they were on a date or not, though it killed her to let him win that round. It wasn't in the brunette's habit to bite her tongue, but she could see that continuing to argue with him wasn't going to get them anywhere. He pointed out her blushing, the firefly almost hating him for the fact that he was enjoying it so much. He accused her of being a nerd, casting a "spell" on her to keep her from trying to change the way she was. His attempted Jedi mind trick was almost more insulting than anything else - she knew enough of the franchise to know that such tricks only worked on the weak-minded. Was that what he thought of her from their short time together?

Deflecting her question by turning it around on her, the girl shrugged, "I'm going to do whatever the heck I feel like doing. If that means changing into a perpetual slacker, then so be it. Or, I'll stay the course and get into Yale." Her shoulders rose and fell in a soft shrug, the speedster giving her a mysterious look before starting to tell her just what he thought she was. Of course, he stopped short of a full sentence, asking if she really thought he would make it that easy on her. Admittedly, she didn't know him that well, but she was starting to.

"Oh, of course not. I'd have been shocked if you told me anything truthful in our first day of getting to know each other." Her tone was laced with sarcasm, an amused smile twitching at the corners of her lips as she sat back in her seat, arms crossing over her chest. She joked about having to toughen up if they were going to continue hanging out with each other, Felix taking the tone of a parent with their child as he insisted that she wouldn't be able to become more like him despite her best efforts. She feigned incredulity, asserting that she would be able to achieve such a state of being if she chose to. After all, if he could do it she saw no reason why she wouldn't be able to as well.

She could tell him his facial expression and body language that he didn't believe her in the slightest, citing her nice nature as the first reason that she wouldn't ever be able to go through with such a change. Secondly, he insisted that it was harder than it looked to come up with his infuriating quips and zingers, and finally he stated that she didn't have the willpower needed to care about nothing the way he does. Most wouldn't understand what he was saying, but the brunette understood perfectly. Some comedian had once done a whole routine on how much work and effort it took to not work, or in his case, not care about anything.

"That's the first believable thing I think you've said to me all night. You're probably right, it'd kill me to try to be more like...you. But does that work in the reverse? That it would kill you to try to be more like me?"
