And from there kind of got dragged out into a bigger, more escapist fantasy.

This is more or less why I have a problem with the term "otherkin" itself. It's like there's an element of these subcultural groups that really really doesn't want to be human or "normal" and what started out as, or could have become, the sort of spiritual work you describe at the end of your post, morphs into this fantasy.

I don't have a problem with the term itself, more-so certain people who use it. Because, as humans, we like to have words to describe ourselves. It reminds me of youngling neopagans who claim to be "Wiccan" but really just haven't done the research yet. I've "met" a few otherkin/therians who aren't escapist, and in fact are the opposite, so I don't find /their/ use of the word as unappealing. Escapism is pretty common in the pagan community as well. Words don't bother me, so much as the people saying them.

But the problem with the "Wiccans" is there are those that do do research but because of all the misinformation out there they really do think that they are Wiccans.

...Valid. I was mosty comparing the way the two groups function. Newbie therians tend to be similar to "Wiccans".

Also, I've been going through a bunch of my favorite therian blogs, and it seems the consensus has changed and that therians seem to recognize this as a... particularly intense spiritual...symbiosis? Iunno. The community seems less escapist than when I first got there.
