"How about a battle of wits?" asked Tide. "A test of luck?" added Ion. "How about both to make it fair?" asked Tide. "Sure, any ideas about a tie breaker Opal?" asked Ion. Both stallions shifted with excitement.

Opal starts giggling. "Silly boys. I want some romance not a show of who is the bigger stud. So I'll give each of you a chance to woo me. One at a time so the other can not see what the other is doing. Now run off and think of a way to woo me then return to me."

Opal stretched out her legs before climbing out of the stream. She settled down in the grass to await the two. Yes this shall prove to be quite amusing. She mused to herself.

Dark Ion returned with a boquet of wild tiger lilies held gently within his mouth. He place them at Opals feet and stated plainly. " I have always wanted someone I could trust. My mother used to tell us foals a story at bedtime about the stone and the river. I will tell it to you now.
Once upon a time there was a beautiful mare with a bright golden coat. She was loved and respected by all and was revered as being very wise and strong willed. One day she fell in love with a red stallion. This stallion however wanted her for all the wrong reasons. He fought and raged and left her alone after he was through with her. Forlorn and heart broken the mare turned to her rage and to the magic that had been passed down through generations. She turned the red stallion into a red river rock to be worn down continuously and to never be allowed to settle in one place permanently again.
The next time the golden mare fell in love it was with a silver stallion. He was kind and caring and helped her raise many fawns. When he entered the next world so did she. She fused her essence with the river and she turned him into a tree. The tree would always be fixed beside the river and would grow and gain in knowledge and wisdom through its association with the river. The tree would absorb water through the roots that touched the water and the water although it never stopped flowing never left the trees side.
Opal, I will do every thing I can to avoid becoming a stone in your current of life. That would leave both of us tortured and worn. My mother taught that story to all of her sons so that we would do right by the mares we would eventually meet. And in that light..." Dark Ion placed the seed of a great sequoia tree at her feet. "It woudl honor me if you would plant this seed by the river, whether you choose me or not." he finished.
Dark Ion bowed low at the mares feet. He sincerly hoped that she could tell he was speaking from the bottom of his heart. He would never abuse mares who chose him and hoped for that right in return

Opal nosed the lilies taking a deep whiff of them. "They look very beautiful and smell just as nice." She listened to the story then smiled. "And such a beautiful story. I wish that I had grown up around my family." She eyed the seed long a hard then gently picked it up in her mouth. She trotted up the stream then back down not satisfied with what she saw. Soon she stopped down stream. Using her hoof she dug a hole then placed the seed in it. She covered it up then trotted back. "That patch of grass there is the greenest next to the stream. That means that the soil there is the most fertile. So your little seed shall grow quite healthy and strong there." She gave him a warm smile. "Now I shall send you away and await your brother."

Dark Tide passed Ion on his way out. "How did you do?" he asked. Dark Ion ignored him and swished his tail showing no indication. That was alright all was fair in love, war and brotherhood.
Dark Tide brought Opal a sprig of the finest Alfalfa. It had just begun to bloom and its potent smell had made his mouth water all the way from the patch. "This represents new beginnings and sweet times to come. Azerin need three things to live. Food, water, and love. Love can be in the form of family, friends, mates, or children but in the end they all serve one purpose, to fill the heart. And in so doing love powers the Azerin way of life and allows us to do things normal horse can't. Some of us are brave, intelligent or strong but everyone needs someone." Tide nodded his head at her after he presented the alfalfa. Then he broke into verse.
In a meadow, In a dale. Two stallions woo, one shall fail In darkest night she shall choose Between dark shadows, win and lose.
Sweet starlight shimmers on an Opal stone Three hearts beat, one becomes lone. To hear true love speak and in twilight stay To victor goes the mare, loser goes away.
But in waking dawn hope shall creep To those who believe in fate and in the deep A truer heart, never fades In trust, love and honor a real stallion wades
In her heart she knows who is right Who will lay beside her in darkest night A mare so true to her whit and in choosing a new flame lit
"Opal you have a tough choice to make between my brother and me. And I want you to know that no matter who you chose neither of us will resent you or the other. I will always be there for you to confide in, win or lose. I simply wish you to be happy with your choice and hope that in the future you will find the family you deserve but were denied." Dark Tide said earnestly.
Dark Ion dropped a small polished obsidian stone at her feet. "This is two remind you of two stallions who fought for your favor. I hope for a family of my own someday and so does Tide, may you choose well." Tide bowed low.

Opal swatted at a fly with her tail. It was on her rump and starting to annoy her to no end. But she just kept missing it with her tail. She moved from her spot to no avail it followed her. She got a sour look on her face as she started stamping her hooves. Yes this was an annoyance and it was ruining her fun at the moment. The boys would return seeing her throwing a small temper tantrum trying to get the fly to move.

Tide and Ion came to a rise and could see the mare swirling around attempting get something of her rump. They couldn't see the fly on her butt. "Maybe she isn't as sane as we thought," said Dark Tide. "Perhaps something is biting her?" asked Ion. They trailed down the ridge and Dark Tide brushed his muzzle lightly over the affected area and got rid of the fly.

Opal let out a happy sigh as the fly went away. "Ohhhh much better thank you so very much. I kept missing the darn fly." She smiled at the two. "So now how to figure out who to pick. Because both of you gave me quite the display." She thought a while. "You both are very sweet."

Ion blushed. Although you could only tell because his gray nose turned slightly pink. He was happy that Opal had enjoyed their company and their friendly displays... at least he hoped Tide's was friendly. Tide scuffed a hoof and looked down. He was slightly embarrassed at the praise.

"Yes," both stallions chime in. "We would both be honored to be your mate. For forever or you so chose or for a while if you tire of our presence." Dark Tide bowed and Ion did too.
