Makani glanced over his should and gave Violet a half smile. "I don't, not really." He looked forward again. "I figure, get as far from the moutain and hills as possible, but find something kinda elevated so we don't get washed away in a flash flood."
He sighed. "Beyond that, we just try to get through the storm with a minimum amount of misery, if possible." As if to underscore his words, at that moment a rumble that was discernable as thunder reached their ears.

Softly the vixen laughed. “You could have fooled me. Here you are taking charge and making sense. It seems you are a born leader to me.” She nodded about the threat of a flash flood. If they got a flash flood then who knows what could happen.
“I fear I’m not a strong swimmer but I can keep my head up if it comes to that so if I get swept up simple float a log after me and I will hang on.” She said it as a jest but the truth was still plain. She was a lousy swimmer. She hoped the area didn’t flood.

Makani walked forward a few more paces in silence, pondering over Violet's words. "Well my sister and I both have very dominant personalities. I don't know if that quilifies me to be a leader, but I shall take your compliment as it was meant." He half-turned his head to give Violet a little smile, then seized on the other part of the conversation.
"You said you are from the mountains, correct?" He chuckled. "I be surprised if there was enough water at a decent temperature for you to become a good swimmer." Makani was a very good swimmer himself, having lived on an island for a good chunk of his life. He had to be, in order to make it to the mainland with his sister.

Feeling her heart do a strange flutter Violet swallowed when Makani turned his head back. He was very kind. “Both of you with dominate personalities? That is a bit scary. I imagine you two must argue quite a bit. Oh.. ah sorry.” Violet blushed after she mused this aloud. She hadn’t meant to be so insensitive to him.
“Actually there was a large river not too far from the tribe’s resting place. It was always a bit cold for my taste. My mother loved it though. Besides there isn’t only snow and ice all year. There are patches of green even flowers in the spring and summer.” Violet didn’t want Makani to think she grew in a barren land of ice and cold.

Makani laughed. "Like cats, but it's part of how we communicate. I don't think either of us have been truly angry with the other, we're just not shy about vocalizing our opinions with the other." He hoped Violet didn't wind up getting dragged into that, if they did find her. Mili could be a bit possessive of her twin...
Makani sighed in a pained manner. "One day, you should see the ocean," he said. "Not just any ocean, tropics ocean. The water there is nice and warm. Makes swimming very pleasant. Of course I'm spoiled in that regard. I only really lived through one season by comparison to the four common around here."

“Oh I see.” Violet knew that there were some tribe members like that but she herself was rather meek when it came to push or shove. Her mother was more stubborn then her so Violet often just followed her mother’s orders.
Violet stared at Makani’s back. “There really is a place like that?” The surprise in her voice was genuine. It was one thing to hear a story about a place another to meet someone who had actually been there. Violet’s tail waged. The prospect of warm water was interesting. “Does warm water make swimming fun?”

Makani thought carefully before he answered. He didn't want to scare Violet, and some of the things he could tell her about the ocean would most certainly frighten her. Better to gain an understanding of the waters first, so that the dangers didn't seem so bad.
Yet by the same token what if she tried going into the waters without any sort of knowledge of the dangers? Better she be a little scared than totally clueless, but just not too scared.
"Swimming in warm water is very pleasant," Makani said. "It feels nice, and lots of things grow in warm waters. Very colorful fish." He looked over at Violet. "Where there's lots of fish though there's predators that eat them. There are some big things in the water too, stuff that could make a meal of a fox." He tried for a reassuring smile. "It's like watching out for predators when you're on land. A really hungry bear would try to eat us if it saw us. You just have to develop different ways to look out for predators under the water than you do with ones on land."

Her ears flicked as she thought about what Makani said. “I suppose that makes sense. Large amount of water, then that’s lots of room for animals to grow in.” She shuddered imagining a fish with bearlike teeth chasing her in the water. “Still as long as I stayed and swam only in the shallower warm water I think I would be ok; right? Especially if I had a guide?” Granted Violet had no idea how to find a guide and certainly wasn’t going to do anything as preposterous as asking Makani to do it. No. Once he finds his sister he’ll be able to keep traveling or go home again. I wonder what his sister thinks about this land and all the weather? I hope she’s alright. I don’t want to worry Makani, but a lot could happen to a fox especially if she’s like him and doesn’t know which plants could be dangerous to eat or what kinds of snakes are poisonous. Oh we have to find her. Makani hasn’t mentioned anyone else so he must be alone besides her. I know how unpleasant that is after I left home.

Makani pondered the question. "Usually, yea. Sometimes a predator might chase you from deep to shallow water though, if they're determined. Sometimes they'll even be in the shallow waters if they think prey is there. But the tropical waters I came from were very clear, so I could see if anything was even in the distance besides being in the shallows."
He hesitated for a moment, then said, "Maybe someday I can show you such waters. It doesn't seem likely, there'd be a lot of travel involved and it would take awhile to find the kinds of water I'm talking about. But, well, my offer's there." He blushed a little while he spoke, but was proud that at least he hadn't stuttered. Trying to keep from bringing attention to his reddened face, Makani went back to looking as though he was trying to pick the best path to take them deeper in the forest and further from the mountain.

Blinking Violet smiled a bit. “I would be honored to have to have you as my guide Makani. Since I left my tribe travel is not a problem for myself and if I were to go I would be glad to have the eyes of someone experienced with the aquatic terrain and it’s dangers. ” Aquatic is the right word isn’t it? I hope I’m not making a fool of myself in front of him. Here I am blathering on and he’s doing his best to find his sister before the storm hits. I should be of more use than this! Looking about Violet saw a plant whose leaves she knew that could be used to cover cuts. It was a bit bigger than the ones she had seen on the mountain, but she supposed that was what happened when plants were in richer less rocky soil. Taking a quick veer she snapped the base of the plant in her teeth and trotted back to Makani. They probably wouldn’t need this for anything, but it never hurt to be prepared.

Makani watched Violet change course for a moment, and eyed the plant in her teeth as she came back with a raised eyebrow. "What on earth is that supposed to be for," he asked, distracted for the moment from oceans and storms.
Sadly, he was even distracted from his sister. He knew he should feel horrible about it, and it was wrong of him to say, but he had little hope of finding Mili. Oh he didn't think she was dead! But she could be unpredictable, even to him. She might have already left the area to continue exploring and figured her brother would catch up. It wouldn't be the first time...
And right now Makani's mind was more focused on Violet and making sure they weren't going to be caught up in another horrible storm than on his ellusive sister.

“The leaves can be used to cover up scraps and keep infection out. I might not have much knowledge of plants this far down the mountain, but this one has a small cousin that likes to live up higher. I know that we probably won’t need it and it’s silly of me to take along, but well… I feel I should be doing something useful and not simply sitting on my tail playing with my paws.” Shaking her head slowly Violet tried her best to clear it. It didn’t help that it started to rain. “mm We are going to get wet. We should get moving so we don’t get caught up in the storm more than need be.” Violet moved a bit faster.

Makani cast his own glance up at the clouds. Rain didn't used to bother him, but where he came from it was warm. The rain here was cold, and even if the weather around was warm there were still winds that could chill to the bone in a short amount of time if one didn't find adequate shelter.
"Perhaps we have gone far enough and should now consider looking for a place to weather out the weather, so to speak, rather than put more distance between us and the mountain." Makani looked back over his shoulder. Certainly there were far enough from it now that none but the very worst disasters could reach them. The ominous rumble of thunder added credence to his thought that shelter was the best of two options.
Of course they'd still have to find shelter and all that, but best to look now for something to suffice.

“Well we could take refuge under a tree. There could a burrow about, but we’d have to make sure it’s high enough to escape any floods. ” The nearity of the storm had her fur bristling. She made sure to stick close to Makani. She didn’t want to be a burden, but storms bothered her quite a lot. “Well now. Any ideas.” She scanned the trees and looked for any useful spot to stay. There were a few good possibilities to stay under. She personally didn’t care where they stayed as long as they were both safe from the storm. She only hoped that Makani’s sister was also as lucky and knew to get out of the storm.

((Hmmmm. Just to make the sister thing plausible, we might have to see if Chena will post her maybe once on the last page.))
Makani looked up at the clouds. He wasn't an expert on weather here in the mainland, but he was getting better. All the lightning and following thunder made him wonder if a tree was such a good refuge. Same with the high winds that were picking up and tossing about in the crowns. What if the one they were hiding under came down? But they were so far from the mountain it didn't seem likely that they'd find a rock or cave to shelter around...
They were still on the move while he thought, and he made sure to give each stand of trees a good look-over with his critical eye. He and Mili had weathered some pretty nasty storms on their island, after all, and they didn't have caves either. Well, none that were accessable and certainly none that he would trust in a storm...
"Here," he finally said, steering them towards a particularly thick stand of trees. He pulled them under the shortest and kept a few feet between them and the actual trunk. Hopefully that would be precaution enough from danger from lightning. The thickness of this little stand, clustered tightly together, meant more shelter from the wind and less likelihood of one of them falling before another caught it.
