Drake Serpentfang

PostPosted: Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:57 pm

"Because of what you are, huh..." He mumbled to himself as he looked at her eyes. After a moment's staring, he looked down and chuckled. "Shame. I'd have been more impressed with you being guilty. But guilt or innocence hardly matters. I assure you, your odds with Learania makes you most welcome here. You can stay and I will let you join my force. You'll get your tome and the revenge you seek." He looked passed the woman, to the man behind her. "...Him, however, I will not so willingly allow to join. First, he'll need to prove his worth."

An abrupt snap of his fingers echoed in the room. "Murphy!" From the call, an attendant, cloaked, with a getup similar to Legault's emerged and bowed before Drake. The spy was never too far away from the Serpent Fang unless ordered otherwise. He was frequently called upon to carry out numerous things. "This is Murphy, one of my best, one of my most trusted... Murphy, rise and acknowledge our guests." He paused as the spy stood and turned around. "...Legault was it? If you intend to stay with Melethia, I'll need to see what you've got. If you don't comply, I'm afraid you'll have walked into a bit of a lion's den. Your task will be simple." He grinned devilishly. "Kill Murphy."

Legault

Legault silently agreed as Drake explained how much easier it would have been to go to some other country in the world rather than what seemed likely to be the least welcoming one. It actually hadn't occured to him at that point that perhaps Melethia wasn't looking for some simple fire tomes for the sake of having them. Then again, he was a bit distracted what with keeping an eye on his surroundings. Enemy territory and all that.

Still, it was pretty hard not to notice Melethia's half-shifting into...well, she was decidedly humanoid, but those features were undeniably similar to the Fire Dragons that had briefly stepped into Elibe. And there was that whole "burn" exclamation she had made...leaving Legault to wonder if she, like Ninian and Nils, had been forced to take human form. There was also the question of why a dragon had recruited a lowly assassin's aid. Perhaps she had taken pity on him due to being stranded in the middle of the desert, certainly, but still more questions arose as to her overall intentions...

Legault knew he should have been a bit more alarmed by the fact that Melethia was getting angry and showing off her dragonly features (of which was another concern, naturally), but, in truth, he felt like a spectator connecting the dots at the moment. Of course, that changed when the Serpent Fang addressed him...subsequently giving the order to try and kill one of his best men. The first reaction on the former Black Fang's part was quite predictable - bringing out his daggers. In his right hand was a Killing Edge and in the left was a Runesword, the latter being a treasure he'd come across whilst adventuring with Eliwood and friends. The next thing he did, though, was regard the Serpent Fang rather than his supposed opponent.

"So I suppose you have all your male guests engage in mortal combat with your best agents?" he asked, unable to keep the sarcasm out of his voice (though not particularly trying). Now somewhat resigned to the fact that it was one of those confounded 'comply or die' situations, Legault stepped forward with his eyes trained on Murphy and flipping over one of the daggers in his hands, conveying that he was ready whenever the other man was.

So he was willing to let her have what she wanted. Melethia's frown turned back into a grin, but this time it was more of an evil grin. She would get her pay back. Her features became more human like once more.

When Drake mentioned Legault, she turned around and looked at him. Melethia had forgotten that he was with her. She backed up to give him some space. So he had to kill this Murphy person.

"Legault," She said, "I didn't save your a** just so you can get killed a few days later. Do what you got to do." Melethia got a better look at Murphy. Something seemed off to her. She sniffed the air, which made her even more confused. Who is this thief?

Drake used his attendants for a variety of purposes, and as one of his most trusted, Murphy could only be expected to be called upon for something like this. The Assassin's daggers appeared as Legault drew his weapons, spinning them idly in bandaged fingers before holding their handles tightly. Legault was a mystery, his abilities unknown, with no prior evidence that the Assassin could extrapolate from. The muscles in Murphy's legs were already tightening, ready for action.

"...Ladies first." Murphy tensed, shifting to a ready position, but continued to wait for Legault's response, hair swept across the eyes. Murphy's entire frame was tense, taut like a bowstring, brown eyes focused squarely on the fellow Assassin standing close by. No sound came from Murphy after that, simply the slight shifting of fabric as the Assassin watched. And waited.

Legault

"My, how original," retorted Legault, smirking at Murphy and watching for any sudden movements. He was fondly remembering a Black Fang that had 'mistaken' him for a woman he'd ended up executing as per his duties as the Cleaner. While he wasn't particularly proud of his past, that kill had been a decidedly easier one than the others. Well, all right, satisfying was probably a better word to sum it up there. Still, he certainly wasn't going to associate that fool's skill with this guy's. Especially since the lack of hesitance and the intense focus on his opponent's part reminded Legault of a certain assassin from back home.

Seeing that this Murphy fellow was waiting for his move, Legault briefly weighed his options. He could either go in close just like the other guy likely expected and find out who was the better combatant the hard way...or sit back and use his Runesword. Though the latter choice tempted him, the purple-haired assassin decided it would be better to keep his trump card concealed until the right moment...so that just left the hard way.

Bounding forward with a few quick steps, Legault confidently brandished his knives and stepped into Murphy's range. While prepared to sidestep and feint as the situation required, he knew that the real fight wouldn't begin unless an actual move was made. He lashed out with his Killing Edge in a fluid movement, holding his Runesword at the ready just in case Murphy got aggressive and didn't move like Legault hoped he would.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Murphy said nothing. Legault was ready for combat, taking a few steps forward before stopping within reach. The Assassin did not respond to his taunt, and merely stood. And waited. Legault's methods and fighting style was a complete mystery, and as it was, the best way to ascertain his abilities was to give him the first strike. Murphy's strength lied in movement, dodging attacks and striking back. So the black-and-purple-clad Assassin waited. And waited.

And then he moved, the red blade of his Killing Edge whipping out towards Murphy's neck. The Assassin didn't flinch; even the brown eyes peering out from under thick black hair belied very little reaction beyond determination, steely and hard. Murphy merely leaped back, hands pressing neatly to the floor, and rebounded up and back upright in one smooth motion. As Murphy fell back towards the ground, one hand flashed towards a baggy sleeve, and then a pair of wickedly sharp knives were whistling through the air, aimed for Legault's shoulders. The Assassin's soft-soled shoes silently made contact with the floor again before the knives could make contact with anything but air, and Murphy simply stood, not saying a word. The two knives the Assassin wielded spun idly in adept fingers while waiting, brown eyes not leaving Legault's form.

Legault

Legault had really hoped Murphy wouldn't reveal himself to be an able combatant, but he supposed the definition of one of the Serpent Fang's best men would have to fit this fellow considering how the other bandits had the same look about them as their ruffian counterparts in Legault's native world. Indeed, Murphy was definetly no pushover if he'd been able to execute that acrobatic display as a battle technique. Still, Legault's dispirited analysis of the opponent's skill didn't divert his focus on Murphy's movements enough so that he was unprepared for those knives that had just been tossed at him. With a maneuver that spoke of his own reactionary skills, Legault sidestepped the projectiles with a spinning motion and suddenly darted forward as quickly as he could, his own cloak whirling as he went along. True to his namesake of 'The Hurricane', Legault planned to strike hard and fast with both of his blades...no matter Murphy's skill.

Now dashing towards his opponent, Legault spun the Killing Edge in hand, planning to slice across Murphy's left arm and follow up with the Runesword in the same general area. It was his intent to unrelentingly press the attack this time around, not wanting to break away after the movement and instead engage in a melee bout with the opposing assassin. Using his Runesword's ability would only come as a last resort or a finishing move by this point.

Click to show.Murphy's fingers twitched on the handles of the melee-range knives as Legault sidestepped the knives that had been thrown, aimed to incapacitate. It was much easier to pick enemies off when they were unable to fight back, and it reduced their ability to inflict damage while you were busy attacking them. His violet cloak whipped around him like a whirlwind as he moved, eyes glinting intently as he took aim and struck.

The Assassin's response was to dip neatly to the side, spinning in a tight circle, then to dip and roll once, pulling back upright and solidly on both feet. It was as if the young Assassin was dancing around him, effortless and graceful. Murphy's gaze never left Legault's form, eyebrows drawing together as brown eyes narrowed in determination. Murphy produced another throwing knife, using the left hand to throw it at Legault's shoulder, and took a bounding step to the side to place more distance between the two of them. Two more throwing knives followed the first, and then the second melee knife appeared in Murphy's left hand again, as if it'd never moved.

"...Is that all?"

Legault

Legault's confident front had completely evaporated upon seeing Murphy effortlessly dodge around his onslaught. '...I might just be in trouble,' he admitted to himself as he ducked right under the first of the oncoming projectiles. His thoughts of pressing the attack changed completely to survival at this point, now put completely on the defensive thanks to Murphy's agility and arsenal. He leapt forward from his sitting position on the ground, standing himself up as soon as he'd landed and whirling around to face Murphy's position. Naturally, he was met by the other airborne projectiles right then.

"Tch...!" he grunted, trying to step out of the way again before it was too late. Unfortunately, Murphy's movement had been too quick even for him and Legault realized he'd been hit in the arm as he pulled himself out of Murphy's direct range (though clearly it had been only half-successful). Without looking at the wound at all, Legault somewhat reflexively pulled it out and trusted his body to only bother him about it after he killed this kid...or died trying, but that was far less glamarous an ending as he had hoped. Hell, he might have been out of practice, but he was still the Hurricane through and through. That should have been enough.

Briefly glancing at the other assassin, Legault decided it was time to see if the Runesword still had some kick after all this time. As it turned out, the arm that had been hit was the one that still held his Killing Edge. It would only be natural that he'd lead in with the Runesword of his uninjured arm on his last desperate attack. At least, that was what he hoped Murphy would think.

Deciding to give the reckless charge thing one last go, Legault shot forward and brought up both weapons at once, making his intent to strike out at melee range with the Runesword clear but also having his Killing Edge at the ready. When he was just outside of Murphy's range, Legault stopped in place and brought up the Runesword as if to slash at the other man - only he was too far to have been doing any actual direct damage. The magic sword suddenly activated, glowing briefly as its spell extended over to Murphy. On any normal opponent, it stood to hold them in place and drain their life force. Legault just hoped the surprise factor was enough to tilt the scales in his favor.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Murphy let out a small breath and took one step back as Legault ripped the knife out without so much as a wince. He didn't seem to take note of the wound in the process, nor be bothered by the blood saturating through the fabric of his clothing. Either he was resistant to pain, or trained to push past it. Either way, it was a useful thing, a fellow that could continue on despite injury. In the context of a battle, though, with him as an opponent... not so useful.

He was bullrushing again. Why was he bullrushing again? It was ineffectual the first time. Murphy's melee knives deflected the sharp blades of his own weapons, but as the Assassin was rolling out of the way, Legault was striking out again with one of his weapons. The confusion flitted across Murphy's face for only a moment; in its place was surprise, and then stifling fear. Murphy tried to leap out of the way, but the surprise stalled the Assassin's actions just long enough for the Runesword to strike accurately. Murphy collapsed on hands and knees to the ground as the elder magic of the Runesword swept over like a thick fog, dulling the senses and the mind. N-No...! Focus...!!

As soon as the attack broke, Murphy rolled away and back up, breath coming hard. Brown eyes glittered as the Assassin stared hard at Legault, knives ready. You aren't going to hit me with that again. I know how it works. I know how you fight. You will never win.

Legault

'And that makes us about even, I think,' thought Legault, his trademark smirk reappearing as his wound began to heal. Besides the fact that his arm would now work better, he could see that he'd finally had some effect on this Murphy character. It wasn't like he was celebrating victory, but he knew now that his biding time to activate the Runesword had paid off in the end. Glancing over at the Serpent Fang briefly, Legault wondered if the man even cared if one of his 'best agents' had been struck by arcane magic that common bandits likely did not comprehend. Probably not, though, seeing as how he'd set it up as a fight to the death in the first place.

Looking back to Murphy, Legault flipped his daggers in hand and stepped forward ever so slowly. "Now now, I've already rushed at you twice and revealed my only means of hurting you. What say you do the honors of starting this time? Perhaps you'd like to throw some more sharp objects at me for a while?...Well, whatever you do, I should tell you that glare of yours isn't quite powerful enough to turn me to stone."

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Murphy's breathing was reined in with just a few seconds of concentration; though the sudden shock was still lingering in those brown eyes, Murphy's chest had stopped heaving quite so violently in spite of the aftereffects of an increased heart rate and swelling panic and sharp ache in the lungs. Murphy took a single step back, watching Legault with all the intensity of an eagle watching its prey far, far below on the ground. The Assassin's brown eyes flickered briefly to the Runesword in his hand, then to the Killing Edge, and back to Legault. Those eyes narrowed, jaw setting, lips curling back just enough to reveal gritted teeth.

Very abruptly, almost as if there was no transition between the two, Murphy was running at Legault, knives out. The Assassin dipped to the left, then leaped to the right, flipping around in the process, both wrists flicking out to give a powerful slash at the wrist and forearm holding his precious Runesword. "Too slow," Murphy muttered, face just barely close enough to the fellow Assassin to be heard, before twirling around and reaching his back. Murphy gave another mighty strike, knives giving an x-shaped blow to his back before flipping over and landing back upright a short distance away, knives out.

Murphy flicked a lock of black hair away from the eyes and stared at Legault, leg muscles tensing again to prepare to dodge or strike. "...Was that sufficient?"

[in summary: feint left, leap right, spin once in place to make striking back in any one place less simple due to all the movement, slashing at his left wrist and hand to cripple the use of his Runesword, then around to the back, crossing blows down his back, and then flip over and away from a possible counterattack.]

Legault

Legault had stopped in place as soon as Murphy had resumed movement and watched him carefully...though he found it hard to keep up. Still, the reason he'd taunted in the first place was so that Murphy would attack first.

Legault continued to stand his ground and wait as Murphy drew closer. He knew full well that this kid could leap off the walls and run like a speed demon, but he just had to trust his own skills and find a way to counter. By this point, he figured the guy would do some more fancy maneuvers to confound him before striking...so he just had to wait for the actual strike. Besides, stepping off to the side would merely alter Murphy's course - there was no avoiding the coming onslaught.

Eyes watching Murphy's form and hands intently, Legault brought up his knives in defense as he came to the right. However, as Murphy moved to the left, so did Legault. He was more or less trying to follow the other man's quicker movements so that he didn't get completely caught off-guard. It was clear now that Murphy was going for the Runesword that had so offended him. Legault's first thought was that he couldn't afford to lose that handy little dagger...and his second was that he couldn't afford to lose that hand. He darted to the other side as rapidly as he could, moving himself closer to Murphy as if to strike out with his other hand (the one holding the Killing Edge).

Unfortunately, as Murphy pointed out, he was just too slow. Without even realizing the other man's position until he felt the blades on his back, Legault cried out in pain as he was slashed from behind. Still clutching both of his daggers in hand, Legault fell on one knee and cursed his incompetance. He hadn't seen battle for a while now, but this kid was something else. He had to do something or else he was beat...and then the simplest of plans came to him. One that, perhaps, was fueled by his desperation. With his back turned to Murphy and his form concealed by the further bloodied cloak, he quickly switched the hands that held his Killing Edge and Runesword. It was a barely traceable movement, naturally, and could be seen as him gathering his bearings from the people looking from behind. Indeed, he did get up on his feet and turn around to face Murphy, his face a grim mask that conveyed hopelessness. Which was partly true, of course, but only revealed in a bid to lower the other assassin's expectations even a tiny bit. He knew Murphy would still be wary of the Runesword, but Legault was holding them in such a manner that the blades were pointed down and away from his immediate viewpoint. Besides meaning that the blade couldn't harm Murphy from the direction it was pointed, the slightly different appearances of the daggers were hidden for the moment.

Stepping forward, Legault flipped the Killing Edge in hand briefly before darting at Murphy for the third time in their fight. He held the Killing Edge up at the other assassin as if to activate the magic sword that was currently in his other hand, but continued to run forward anyway, now turning over the Runesword as well. His hope was that Murphy would dodge the nonexistent magic that the Killing Edge had shot out and leave himself open to an attack from what he assumed would be the blind spot of the dagger's view. Whatever Murphy's reaction, Legault used the Runesword regardless. It was pretty much his only chance to stay alive, knowing he couldn't last with many more cuts than what he already had now.

...it looks like this won't be easy...
PostPosted: Sun Nov 20, 2011 1:20 pm

Murphy waited in silence, hands still clutching onto melee knives that now dripped blood onto the ground. Legault's wounds were not deep; shallow enough to allow him to move, but deep enough to cause pain. If Legault passed the Serpent Fang's test to join their ranks, it would be imperative to not kill him. And so Murphy watched, brown eyes focused on his form as his cloak shifted before he rose up to his feet again. The Assassin stared back at him, taking in the expression before tensing, feet shifting to spread the center of balance more effectively before Legault moved again.

Murphy swiftly sidestepped, kerchief flapping briefly in the air before settling back against the Assassin's neck and collarbone. Murphy's response was to produce another throwing knife and toss it towards Legault's unwounded shoulder. User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. Both melee knives were back in the appropriate hands when he lashed out a knife as if to strike with his elder magic attack again, and rolled to the side. Murphy was standing upright again when the dark, distorted cloud of elder magic came from out of the weapon in Legault's hand and bulleted forward, aiming for the Assassin opposing him.

"Sh--" Murphy leaped out of the way of the attack, tucking into a roll in the last minute, and rose up, panting hard. The Runesword strike had missed, but the frantic, last-second attempt to dodge the attack had caused Murphy to land badly, and now the Assassin's left shoulder ached horribly, stinging in pain each time Murphy attempted to move that arm. "...Tch..." Murphy spat quietly on the ground and took a step away from Legault, visibly wary. Elder magic was dangerous. Very dangerous. The only way to stop him from using it was to keep him from moving...

Murphy's eyes darted around the room, and after a few moments, the Assassin leaped into action; Murphy planted a foot on a nearby crate and kicked it towards Legault. Even if the strike missed, the action would kick up a considerable cloud of dust in the air, obscuring his view. While it would only obscure Murphy's, too, Murphy had considerably more experience in finding visibility through sandy conditions than Legault did (at least, Murphy liked to assume that was the case). So with this impromptu 'smokescreen' in place, Murphy leaped from environment piece to environment piece, crate to chair to broken pillar to solid, upright pillar, finally rebounding off of the pillar and towards Legault's chest, heel first.

Legault

Murphy had moved just as anticipated, but Legault hadn't counted on yet another knife to be thrown at him. There was also the fact that his Runesword had missed, but then Murphy had proven himself quick enough on his feet that this was altogether not unexpected. Reacting quickly and ignoring his wounds, Legault threw his entire body out of the way without giving much thought to countering a possible next move Murphy could make. Luckily, Murphy was standing in place and looked to be in some amount of pain. Though he hadn't noticed whilst dodging the knife, the tuck-and-roll Murphy had executed had hurt his shoulder. Which was a welcome consolation prize to Legault's failed attack, naturally.

Before Legault could abuse his Runesword further, Murphy sprung into action and kicked a crate towards him. This time more prepared to dodge, Legault sidestepped yet another object Murphy was casting towards him and focused again on the opposing assassin...only he wasn't quite there anymore. Experiencing a mental lapse of panic, his eyes darted wildly around in an attempt to make out Murphy's agile form. It was fortunate that in this state, he did home in on Murphy bouncing across the room like a madman. Straining his eyes to keep track of him, Legault suddenly registered that the assassin was heading directly for him boot-first.

It was good that he had caught Murphy in the dust cloud that was supposed to conceal his movements, but Legault was getting tired of fruitlessly dodging the other man. This may have been the only moment in time that Legault had to make a direct hit. Raising his Runesword up, he activated it one last time at the airborne Murphy...and then felt his chest impacted quite painfully as the assassin made contact using his heels. Though Murphy had hit on the light leather armor he wore with his cloak, there was a crack both felt and heard from within his torso.

[You can decide how he moves after getting hit, I just don't know where Murphy would end up or if the Runesword would slow his momentum a bit.]
